I started considering the usual question, “Why does God make mosquitos?” Aside from the environmental consideration, (major source of food for a lot of critters) I came up with some thoughts that occupied the rest of the walk. I remembered hearing a comedian talking about walking in the woods with his wife. As they were being attacked by biting flies, he recounts that his wife, “this maniac from Texas that I’m married to, says ‘Where I come from a man likes to get bit. Dear friends in Christ,

I wrote the following reflec-tion while on vacation inMinnesota. I submit it foryour consideration.

On Mosquitos“Wow, look how high the water is!” wesaid as we crossed rivers and creeks inIllinois. We were traveling to Iowa andMinnesota. We knew that there had been alot of rain and flooding but we hadn’t real-ly thought about it until we saw rivers con-sistently well over their banks.

When we arrived at the family farm inIowa, we were greeted by another indica-tor of how wet the year had been—mos-quitos! We were hardly out of the carwhen a cloud of the things mounted upout of the tall grass and engulfed us. It wasa quick trip into the house.

A week later I was walking in a state parkin Minnesota. By that time our family hadbecome accustomed to putting on Deep

Woods Off pretty much whenever we leftthe house. You can bet that I had slatheredmyself with it when I got out of the car.

I was about a mile into a three and a halfmile hike when I noticed that I was gettingbitten by the mosquitos swarming aroundme.

My first thought was “Minnesota mosqui-tos are tough!” That was followed by thethought that it was going to be a long mis-erable walk.

“Mindfulness” teaches us to look for Godpresent in the moment, however mundaneor unpleasant it may seem. Gerald May, inAddiction and Grace, suggests that times ofdiscomfort can be embraced for their “spa-ciousness,” meaning that we acknowledgeand embrace our need for God.

So, was there anything to notice, to learn,or to enjoy in being mosquito bait? In noparticular order:• These mosquitos are tough. And theyjust are. I don’t have to enjoy it but gettingangry or upset is not changing anything.• In a weird sort of way it got to be agame swatting and chasing off the“skeeters.”• I found that I was grateful for bugspray, the shelter of the house to which Iwould be returning, and for the opportuni-

ty to walk in such beauty that made it allworth it.• I gradually noticed that the mosquitoswere focusing on my right arm and my t-shirt. Apparently I hadn’t sprayed there ascarefully. It was a learning that served mewell for the rest of my trip.

It would be way too much to say that I amgrateful for mosquitos. I did, however, experience a mindfulness for which I amgrateful. I don’t know why God made mos-quitos. But God is God. It is worthwhile tolook for God and what God might betelling us in the unpleasant …. in thepedantic …. in the now.

Grace to you and peace from God our Fatherand the Lord Jesus Christ,

The vestry’s June meeting was held onWednesday, June 17, 2014. (The vestrydid not meet in July.)

Wilson Brown called the meeting to orderand opened with prayer. Kara Sensenigpresented a brief report on the mission tripwith the youth which was a very positiveexperience for those who attended.

Alan Pipkin, Treasurer submitted hisreport via email. The report was approved.

Senior Warden’s Report: Rob Jarvisreported that St. John’s had hosted themost recent Convocation meeting andplans were underway for the AnnualLynchburg Convocation “Night at theBallpark” on August 19th. He reported thatJenny Green’s last Sunday as Altar GuildChair was June 15th. He proposed present-ing the Altar Guild with an engraved brassurn given in her honor. A motion to pur-chase the urn using Vestry designatedfunds passed.

Rob also noted that it would be nice tohave flag holders out front so flags couldbe mounted each Sunday before the servic-es. It was agreed that it be a good idea tohave flags out front. Bill Jackson said hewould move the flag holders.

Junior Warden’s Report: Bill Jacksonreported that the lighting project was com-plete, and that some of the remaining oldspot lights that were an eyesore would beremoved. He is also looking into a carpetcleaning for the sanctuary. He installednew towel holders in the bathrooms. John

Waff noted that there is some wear show-ing on the carpet on the steps leading intothe choir area, and asked that it be lookedat.

New Business: • Calendar Planning: Wilson noted that hewas trying to be more proactive aboutmaking sure events were on the calendar ina timely fashion and had proper staffing. There was brief discussion about possibleways to make sure all the upcoming eventswere appropriately planned for. It was sug-gested that the committee chairs meet toplan events relevant to their committees, and that the calendar be reviewed regularlyto make sure all upcoming events are cov-ered.

Unfinished Business:• The Action items were reviewed.

• Review of Bylaws: Steve Wandrei report-ed that he had reviewed the Bylaws andmade a few minor suggestions for changes. He will work with the subcommittee tocome up with appropriate language for thesuggested changes by the August meeting.

• Sign Proposal: Bill Jackson reported hehad spoken with the volunteers who hadproposed completing the brick work for anew sign. The offer was only for an LEDtype sign. The Vestry ad hoc sign commit-tee will work on a proposal for a non-LEDsign to be discussed at the next vestrymeeting.

The Vestry Report Jenny Shutt, recording secretary

Page 5: St. John’s Episcopal Church The Gleanings€¦ · Wilson Brown called the meeting to order and opened with prayer. Kara Sensenig presented a brief report on the mission trip with

• Church Directory: Wilson suggestsusing a new online directory format thatalso has useful applications for smart-phones and other mobile devices. The costis $70.00 per year. Jenny will sign up forthe service and begin the data entryprocess.

Falling Creek Park was $35.00for half the day or $70 for the whole day.The Vestry agreed that Falling Creek parkfrom 9:00 am–2:00 pm would be ideal.Martha will make the reservation forAugust 17th. Christian Formation Kara Brown & Shannon McGuirk

This summer, St. Johns and Main StreetUnited Methodist Church joined togetherfor Vacation Bible School. It was a HUGEsuccess! We had 74 children attendthroughout the week, which has neverbeen seen before in either church! Thegreatest thing about this, is that the majori-ty of these children don't call St. Johns orMain Street their home church! It was agreat outreach to the community!

The children loved coming together eachnight to sing songs and have openingprayer by our own Fr. Wilson, Then wesplit into age groups—Minnows, Starfish,Dolphins and Sharks, and started rota-tions! The kids (and adults too) enjoyedDon Carkhuff's “Seashore Storytelling!”“Splash-tacular Crafts” brought out the

creativity in the groups, and childrenenjoyed stuffing fish, coloring slapbracelets, making sand art, decoratingcrosses, and also making sail boats! “Sinkor Swim Games” let all of the built upexcitement and energy come out of thesechildren. Some prayers were even heardbefore VBS, for it not to rain, so they couldplay games outside! The “Big Catch BibleChallenge” helped the children rememberthe verse taught each night, with gamesand music that is still being heard! Eachnight ended with a closing and creativesnack. On the last night, the group whobrought in the most spare change for theBackpack Mission Project were given theprivilege to spray silly string on the adults. The Minnows (3-4 year olds), our largestgroup with 20 kids, won and were gleefully

excited to silly string their leaders! As Donwas often heard saying—not anotherMinnow!

Overall I believe VBS was successful for allinvolved. We had the man power, and theinvolvement needed to make it such a suc-cess! Thank you to St. John’s for all of theprayers before, leading up to, and duringthe week and a special thank you to BethBagley, Kara Brown, Sherri Hodnett,Chandra Schmehl, and Brenda Church forfacilitating the crafts and lessons! And alsoto Heather Garrett for getting our snacksand the ice cream social together for us!

We hope to join forces together again inthe future with Main Street UnitedMethodist Church!

Protect Yourself During StormsAll thunderstorms produce lightning and aredangerous. Lightning continues to be one ofthe top two storm-related killers in the US. In2013 there were 145 injuries & 23 fatalitiesfrom lightning. Although most lightning vic-tims survive, people struck by lightning oftenexperience a range of serious, even debilitat-ing results (burns, heart or/ brain damage).Other associated dangers of thunderstormsinclude hail, strong winds, tornadoes andflash flooding. Flash Flooding is responsiblefor more than 140 deaths annually. Before Storms are Forecast:1. Make a family communications plan andbuild a home emergency kit. More info:http://www.vaemergency.gov/readyvir-ginia/getakit2. Remove rotting or dead branches ortrees that could fall and cause injury ordamage during a severe thunderstorm. To Prepare for a Thunderstorm:1. Secure outdoor objects that could blowaway or cause damage.2. Postpone all outdoor activities & indoorwater activities (pool, hot tub).3. Remember the 30/30 Lightning SafetyRule: If you hear thunder within 30 sec-onds of a lightning flash, the storm is closeand you should take cover immediately.Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearingthe last clap of thunder.4. Get inside a home, building, or steelframed automobile with doors & windowsclosed, not touching any metal. You aremuch safer inside a vehicle than outside.

Lightning Safety Tips for Inside the Home:1. Shutter windows, close window blinds, shades or curtains and close outside doors.Stay away from windows and doors. Donot lean against concrete walls or lie onconcrete floors.2. Avoid contact with cords, corded phonesand electrical equipment. Unplug any elec-tronic equipment before the storm arrives.Use a corded telephone only for emergen-cies. Cell phones are safe to use.3. Avoid contact with plumbing faucets, pipes and radiators. Do not wash your hands, take a shower, wash dishes or do laundry. Summary of Lightning Safety Tips IfYou Are Caught Outside:1. If caught outside, squat low with yourfeet flat on the ground. Put your handsover your ears and your head betweenyour knees. Make yourself the smallest tar-get possible & minimize your contact withthe ground. Never lie flat on the ground.2. In an open area, avoid water sources, isolated sheds & tall trees, and anythingmetal (bicycles, farm equipment, motorcy-cles, golf clubs & carts). Go to a low placesuch as a gully or valley, however, be alertfor flash floods. On open water, get to landand find indoor shelter immediately.

Altar Guild Judy Whitehead

Things went very smoothly during ourtransition month. The July Altar Guild dida wonderful job. We have now obtainedgluten free wafers for communion. Pleasecall the office to let us know if you shouldbe served them. We hope we can meeteveryone's needs.

The Altar Guild is in need of milk cartons. Please leave clean, rinsed and dry cartonsin the kitchen in a bag marked “altar guild”.Thanks!

A note from Rob:

Some time later this summer you maynotice a new brass vase that will be used atthe rear if the church and in the vestibule. This vase has been acquired to honor themany years of loving service Jenny Greenhas contributed to the altar guild and thecongregation. The inscription reads “Tothe glory of God and in thanksgiving for theministry of Jennifer W. Green by the congre-gation of St. John’s, June 15, 2014.”

This vase, like Jenny is beautiful, durable, utilitarian and of the best quality.

Shepherd’s TableMany thanks to all who helped to make ourJune lunch a great success as we served 98plates of food. Hot dogs, baked beans, anddesserts were our menu and many turnedout to help prepare and serve our clients.

Hot dogs and milk were bought withmoney donated by Rebecca Mays andmyself. Ellen Wandrei, Revelle Hamilton, and Cheryl Miler brought fresh buns, andMarilyn Rowe, Peggy Jeffreys and Pat

Nelson furnished chili. Cakes and brownieswere made by Louise Pipkin, Marylin Sites,Jo Bell and Marge Rucker. Baked beanswere prepared by Shannon McGuirk,Brenda Arbogast, Barbara Murphy andMartha Nowlin. Kathie Childers donatedfresh fruit.

It was very handy that our church young-sters volunteered to help serve. Theyincluded Nick and Kate Brown, Foster andLucie Garrett and Michael Eubank.

Since Friday, July 4, was a holiday, theShepherd’s Table was closed, and we didnot serve a meal, so our next luncheon willbe August 1. I will be in contact with ourregular helpers, but if you would like tocontribute to this worthy cause, give me orBev Henderson a call. I will be out of townthat day, and Bev has agreed to be incharge.
