Biology :

Le-5: Cell : The Fundamental Unit of Life

Synopsis :

1. Plasma/Cell membrane: This is the outermost covering of the cell that separates the

contents of the cell from its external environment. The plasma membrane allows or

permits the entry and exit of some materials in and out of the cell so the cell membrane

is called a selectively permeable membrane. Some substances like CO2 or O2 gases can

move across the cell membrane by a process called diffusion. The movement of water

molecules (liquid) through such a selectively permeable membrane is called osmosis.

Osmosis is the passage ot water from a region of high water concentration through a

semi-permeable membrane to a region of low water concentration. If the medium

surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, the cell will gain

water by osmosis. Such a solution is known as hypotonic solution.

If the medium has exactly the same water concentration as the cell, there will be no

net movement of water across the cell membrane. Such a solution is known as isotonic

solution. If the medium has a lower water concentration then the cell will lose water by

osmosis. Such a solution is known as hypertonic solution.

The plasma membrane is flexible and is made up of organic molecules called lipids

and proteins. The flexibility of cell membrane also enables the cell to engulf in food

and other material from its external environment. Such process is known as

endocytosis. It is observed in Amoeba.

Page 12: St. John’s E.M High School … · St. John’s E.M High School (Affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi) Class: IX _____ Stay Home Stay Fit

2. Cell wall (Protective wall): Plants cells, in addition to the plasma membrane have

another rigid outer covering called cell wall. The cell wall lies outside the plasma

membrane. The plant cell wall is mainly composed of cellulose. It is a complex

substance and provides structural strength to plant cells. When a living plant loses

water through osmosis there is shrinkage or contraction of contents of the cell away

from cell wall. This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis.

WORKSHEET (Home Task)

A. Choose the correct answer :

1. A cell will swell up if ( )

(a) The concentration of water molecules in the cell is higher than the concentration of

water molecules in the surrounding medium.

(b) The concentration of water molecules in the surrounding medium is higher than

the concentration of water molecules in the cell.

(c) The concentration of water molecules is same in the cell and in the surrounding

medium

(d) The concentration of water molecules does not matter.

2. Which of the following statement marks as a difference between plant cell and animal

cell? ( )

(a) Plant cells have cell wall which animal cells do not.

(b) Plant cells do not have vacuole while animal cells do have.

(c) Plant cells have only cell membrane while animal cells have both cell wall as well

as cell membrane.

(d) Plant cells have more plastids while animal cells have few plastids.

3. The process of plasmolysis in plant cell is defined as: ( )

(a) Breakdown of plasma membrane in hypotonic solution.

5. Osmosis is a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a

semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated

one. Can you pick out the option among the following which does not belong to this

process? ( )

(a) The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane is affected by the

amount of substances dissolved in it.

(b) Membranes are made of organic molecules such as proteins and lipids.

(c) Molecules soluble in organic solvents can easily pass through the membrane.

(d) Plasma membranes contain chitin sugar in plants.

Civics- 2 What is Democracy why Democracy

PART 4 SYNOPSIS

WHY DEMOCRACY?

Points Against

There has been criticism of democracy by various people. The charges are that

• It creates instability by changing its leaders frequently.

• Democracy is about power play and political competition. There is no scope for

morality.

• So many people have to be consulted before any issue is solved. It leads to delay.

• Elected leaders do not know the best interest of the people.

• It leads to corruption for it is based on electoral corruption.

• Ordinary people do not know what is good for them, so decision making should not

be left to them.

Arguments for Democracy:

• Democratic government is a more accountable form of government.

• Democracy improves the quality of decision making.

• Democracy provides a method to deal with differences and conflicts.

• Democracy enhances the dignity of citizens.

• It allows us to correct its own mistakes.

Broader meaning of Democracy :

Democratic ideas can be practised in various decision-making processes. In broader sense

no country can be completely democratic, The features of democracy are only minimum

conditions. A lot can be done towards achieving real democracy.
