THE TERRY MCDOWALL BURSARY Background: Terry (née Geraldine Smith) attended St John’s College in its then new home on Broadway. She was awarded a Second Class B.A. Honours degree in Latin and French in May of 1948. She took up a teaching career in French for a short time in Manitoba and Hawaii, before moving to the United Kingdom in 1952 to study organ. She married in 1955 and settled in England where she continued to teach French in South London through to retirement. Dean’s Report to Assembly, September 16, 2014 This fall we welcome three new Visiting Fellows and three new Research Fellows to St. John’s. Visiting Fellows: Bruce Erickson. Bruce Erickson holds a PhD from York University (2009) and is a newly appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography. Before joining our institution, Dr. Erickson was an Assistant Professor in Geography at York University for three years, and held a Postdoctoral Fellowship in History at Nipissing University from 2008-2010. His research is in the area of cultural geographies of nature and his publications include Canoe Nation: Nature, Race and the Making of a Canadian Icon from the University of British Columbia Press (2013), and another work, co-edited with Catrina Mortimer-Sandilands, Queer Ecologies: Sex, Nature, Politics, Desire from the University of Indiana Press (2010). In addition, Bruce has written ten refereed articles and chapters, which include titles such as “Grey Owl and the Whiteness of Surrogacy,” “Explorations of Whiteness and Identity in Rock Climbing,” and “Colonial Climbs of Mt. Trudeau.” He also has a long list of conference papers and invited presentations on various aspects of cultural geography, gender, race and nature to his credit. Murray Evans (Visiting Fellow, January 1, 2015 – June 30, 2015) Murray Evans is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Winnipeg. While on Research/Study Leave during the winter term 2015, he will be working on a project which builds on his recently published book, Sublime Coleridge: The Opus Maximum (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), for which he was awarded the inaugural UW Arts Research Award. This project expands the scope of Sublime Coleridge by focusing on the later Coleridge and on sublime theory of the last fifty years. Most recent theory of the sublime—in the work of Theodor Adorno, Julia Kristeva, and Fredric Jameson, for example—focuses on the significance of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), famous and important precursor on the sublime. Given Coleridge’s importance for English literary studies, his sublime theory, a radical revision of Kant, deserves more attention. Lori Wilkinson Lori Wilkinson is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and was an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts from 2011 to 2014. Dr. Wilkinson is the current Editor of The Journal of International Migration and Integration and the former Acting Editor of the Journal of Canadian Ethnic Studies. In addition, she is the Director of Immigration Research West, a consortium of 15 universities, over two dozen (and counting) professors, four umbrella community service providers (representing over 400 community organizations in Canada) and all three levels of government. The purpose of Immigration Research West is to study the settlement experiences of immigrants in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, to collect and disseminate research on successful integration and to assist community organizations in the development of programs helping newcomers find work, healthcare, language instruction and settlement.

Research Fellows Krista Barclay Krista Barclay is currently a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of History at the University of Manitoba, working under the supervision of Dr. Adele Perry. Ms. Barclay has a solid background in History with both a B.A. (Hons) and an M.A. Degree in History from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her publications include “Slaves in a Savage Land? The Curious Case of Orcadians in the Hudson`s Bay Company,” which is forthcoming from the New Orkney Antiquarian Journal and a second article on “Slaves in a Savage Land? Orcadians in the Hudson’s Bay Company, 1727 – 1870” published in 2011. Krista has been involved in coordinating Museum Exhibitions on “Tradition and Innovation: The Importance of Agriculture to Markham 1820 – 1920,” and “A Walk Down Main Street Markham in 1910,” which involved an interactive touch screen kiosk for the 700 square foot gallery exhibition. In addition, Ms. Barclay has presented at numerous conferences and has a long list of awards to her credit, including Manitoba Graduate Scholarships and the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. Stephanie Pyne Stephanie Pyne holds a PhD in Geography (2013) from Carleton University and has been awarded a SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to work under the supervision of Senior Fellow, Greg Bak, from the History Department. Dr. Pyne’s project will expand the Residential Schools Map in the Lake Huron Treaty Atlas (an aspect of her doctoral thesis research) into an Atlas of its own, with a variety of interactive maps that are responsive to and reflective of the many dimensions of the ongoing Residential Schools reconciliation processes. This postdoctoral research project intersects well with Greg Bak’s work on Indigenous and critical approaches to archives and database creation and management. It will greatly enhance the project’s capabilities in terms of implementing a pilot geospatial database of residential schools records. Joseph Wiebe (Research Fellow, July 1 – December 31, 2014) Joseph Wiebe holds a PhD in Religion (2013) from McMaster University and has been now awarded the D.F. Plett Postdoctoral Fellowship to develop a comparative research project on Mennonite and Metis land cultures in 1870-1925. This research compares two land cultures, analyzing the ways Mennonites and Metis relationships to the land shaped their religious identities within decidedly different legal contexts. It compares and contextualizes Metis-Mennonite relations, investigating how they are interlinked with land issues – land claims, immigration, settlement and displacement. The project assesses three interrelated topics: (i) the context of settlement and displacement; (ii) the question of land culture; and (iii) the process of confederacy.

Amy Scott will be organizing the fall term events and Jade Weimer will be handling the winter term. Free desserts, so drop by.

Every year, the Winnipeg Public Library’s “On the Same Page” program asks Manitobans to choose one book that everyone in the province should read. This year, one of the four books on the shortlist is “Imagining Winnipeg: History Through the Photographs of L.B. Foote” written by Senior Fellow Esyllt Jones and published the University of Manitoba Press. The winning book will be the focus of several months of readings and events, and the Foundation buys 1000 copies to give to reading groups throughout the province.

Finally, we congratulate Research Fellow, Amy Scott, who has just been named one of three finalists from across Canada for the SSHRC Impact (Talent) award. This is a rare honour and Amy has been invited to a reception in Ottawa in early November, when the winner will be announced.

Chaplain’s September report to council, 2014

Over the summer, I’ve been focusing most of my efforts on planning for the year:

• Suicide intervention training for myself • Planning and executing a leadership retreat with the SJCSA • Reorganizing weekly chapel services- there will now be midday prayer every Wednesday, a

meditation group and evening prayer on Tuesdays, Eucharist once a month, Pints & Compline once a month

• Planning a joint November spiritual retreat with St. Paul’s • Research for the commission on theological education with the diocese • Programming for the residence in the areas of alcohol awareness, safe sex, and mental

health • Bringing in MA counselling interns to work with students in distress but not crisis (who

would otherwise have a difficult time getting support through the university counselling centre)

• Bringing back a new version of Bible & breakfast, in which a local theologian will give a lecture and discussion over breakfast two times a semester

• Liaising with the new Muslim & Jewish chaplains to use my office

There is now a chapel brochure and schedule available which outline the events for the semester.

Bursar’s report to Assembly

Building Projects

Over the summer, five of our classrooms received significant audio visual upgrades. Two of our smaller seminar classrooms were equipped with large, 80 inch high definition wall mounted screens. Laptops, or other video devices can be conveniently plugged into the wall and projected onto these screens. In three of our larger classrooms, motorized screens and high definition ceiling mounted projectors were installed, also with the same convenient inputs. These improvements will make a tangible difference to how content is delivered to students.

After a bit of a delay, the cloister roof is once again scheduled to be replaced. At this point we don’t have a definite schedule.

The university has contracted with a landscape architect to redesign the grounds surrounding the college. St John’s will be given significant input once the first draft of the designs are presented. Highlights will include the area between St Johns and St Pauls – the paths of interlocking stone are going to be extended in both directions to complete the flow of that space. A general theme that the university is focusing on is increasing green space (grass). This is easier to maintain, and is more manageable for the physical plant staff.

Full, official university wireless has been completed in the residence.

Summer conferences

We were once again very busy this summer in the residence. There was a lot of uncertainty in the original contract negotiations with IEP, but ultimately the numbers were positive.

Residence room revenue $135,320 (previous year $144,779)

Board revenue $193,125 (previous year $217,536)

As you can see, our numbers were marginally less than last year, but last year was exceptional. We are very pleased with this summer’s results and feel good about heading into the fall term.

Audit

Our audit concluded at the end of June, and we recently received draft statements which will be approved at the upcoming meeting of College Council. There are a few adjustments to be made, but overall the auditors were very pleased and there were no issues or significant changes that needed to be made.

Dean of Residence Report to Assembly Residence Projects The U of M completed the installation of their wireless network in the residence earlier this summer which the students are extremely happy about.

We are assessing the common areas to figure out how to best utilize them and we are currently brainstorming ideas.

Summer Conferences We had a slower summer then last year but still had a large number of students stay with us. IEP reduced their official numbers over the summer but we had more residents stay on with us for May and June. Overall we had slightly less students than last summer. We also hosted the Health Quest camp which gives aboriginal teenagers exposure to the medical faculties at the U of M and prepares them to attend the university when they graduate.

Regular Semester We are currently at capacity with a small waitlist of ICM students. IEP have dropped their numbers from 40 students down to 23. With this large drop we still managed to fill up our residence but we did so right at the end of August. With the reduced numbers from IEP I feel we were more successful at attracting new regular students to our residence.

We are involved with Spirit Cup this year which is a year round competition between all of the residences to see who can bring out the most fans to the bison games. Each student has a “spirit cup” shirt that they all wear to the games to represent the building. We hosted events almost every day since move in day and the turnouts are exceeding our expectations.

Our new dons for this year are Rhianne Rodnisky (Sr), Noah Gilfix (jr), Darren Jin (jr), and Momo Watanabe (jr). Our co-presidents are Kadie Jorgenson as well as Micheal Nelson.
