Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with His anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Doors close on the Year of MercyTHE Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy has been a period of prayer initiated by Pope Francis to acknowledge that all people are sinners and require forgiveness as well as forgiving others.

Like previous Jubilees it is seen by the Church as a period for remission of sins and universal pardon focusing particularly on God’s forgiveness and mercy.

It is the 27th Holy Year in history, following the ordinary 2000 Jubilee during John Paul 11’s papacy. The opening day of the Jubilee was also the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council.

SAINTS AND FEASTS16.11 St Margaret of Scotland - (1045–1093)An English princess of the House of Wessex, she was born in exile in Hungary. She was the sister of Edgar Ætheling, the short-ruling and uncrowned Anglo-Saxon King of England. Margaret and her family returned to England in 1057, but fled to the Kingdom of Scotland following the Norman conquest. Around 1070, she married Malcolm III of Scotland, becoming Scottish queen. She was a pious woman, and among charitable works she established a ferry across the Firth of Forth for pilgrims travelling to Dunfermline Abbey. 17.11 St Elizabeth of Hungary - (1207–1231), also known as Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia, was a princess of the Kingdom of Hungary, Landgravine of Thuringia, Germany, and an early member of the Third Order of St. Francis, by which she is honored as its patroness. Elizabeth was married at the age of 14, and widowed at 20. After her husband’s death she regained her dowry, using the money to build a hospital where she herself served the sick. - Wikipedia18.11 The Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts Peter and Paul, Apostles

Brunswick development meeting for parishionersSome time ago the Diocese contacted all the smaller parishes in the Diocese (e.g. Kyogle, Mullumbimby, Corakai etc.) requesting those parishes to form long term plans that would lead to financial stability. The Parish Financial Council, having the responsibility under Catholic Canon Law for the oversight of all parish finances and financial planning, developed a plan including a Parish Planned Giving Program and a major project. For many months the Finance Council has been working with the Diocese on these plans which the Diocese has approved and encouraged. The purpose of the meeting at Brunswick is to communicate this finalised decision to interested parishioners. The Brunswick meeting will be the only meeting held to convey these plans to all parishioners.

Gift for the ParishOn her recent visit to Poland for World Youth Day, Erin Moores returned with a gift for the parish; a ‘print’ of the Icon

of Our Lady of Czestochowa (the ‘Black Madonna’). The Icon has been associated with Poland for the past 600 years and the original is now in the monastery at Jasna Gora. The Icon shows Our Lady directing attention away from herself, gesturing with her right hand toward Jesus as the source of salvation. In turn, the child Jesus extends his right hand toward the viewer in blessing while holding a book of the gospels in his left hand. The Icon will be blessed this Sunday morning.

Today’s GospelIn the context of Luke, today’s Gospel appears near the end of Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem, just prior to the events that will lead to his crucifixion. His warnings and predictions are ominous but can be read in many ways. To those who first heard Luke’s Gospel, those may have been words of encouragement. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans was history (70 AD); Luke’s Gospel, Catholic scholars propose, was written between 80 and 90 A.D. His audience was probably Gentile Christians. Luke here tries to interpret the fall of Jerusalem for them and to locate it in God’s plans for humankind (salvation history).

At the same time, Luke is suggesting to his audience that there will be a considerable elapse of time before Jesus’ final coming. Luke’s listeners have likely seen much upheaval and are anxious to know if these are the signs of Jesus’ coming. Luke is urging greater patience.

In the second part of today’s Gospel, Jesus warns that his followers will face persecution for their beliefs. Luke presents persecution as an opportunity for the followers of Jesus for “It will lead to your giving testimony” (Luke 21:13). In persecution God’s wisdom and power will be shown in the example of followers of Jesus. Perseverance in the face of persecution will lead to their salvation. Here Jesus is assuring his followers that God is present to all believers, even in times of trouble. Ultimately, Jesus will witness to this with his own death. As disciples of Jesus, we try to follow his example, trusting in God’s mercy and protection, even when we are facing difficulties. - Loyola Press

Spiritual Reading at St John’s ChurchThere are many good books available for borrowing in the Parish Library located in St John’s Church. Feel free to avail yourself of these books at any time. Write your name and the title of the book(s) taken in the book provided.

On October 20th, the school celebrated St John’s Day with a beautiful liturgy in the outdoor prayer space. After the service children, parents and visitors joined in some fun activities ranging from cricket, parachute games, mini tennis, lego building and more. It was a special occasion and one that

has become a tradition at St John’s. Our popular school Facebook page also shared some photos from yesteryear for the occasion which certainly got some of the locals reminiscing. A big thank you to our wonderful Parish helpers Mary, Vivianne, Pam and Jan who assisted so willingly with morning tea.
