Principal’s Message
Dear Parents/Guardians,
May is the month of Mary. During this month we recognize Jesus’ Mother and all
of our mothers and the other special women in our lives who nurture and care for
us. Let us remember to give thanks and show appreciation to all the women in
our lives who take on the role of “mother – mothers, grandmother, aunts and so
on.
Throughout the Toronto Catholic District School Board we are privileged to
celebrate Catholic Education. The theme this year is Opening Doors of Mercy. It
combines the theme of mercy and the act of opening doors of reconciliation and
forgiveness in our school communities, in our families and in the world. It is also a
time to recognized how blessed we are to be the largest publicly funded Catholic
board in the country. Just this past Sunday, I had the pleasure of watching as
some of our students participated in the Sacrament of reconciliation and later this
month many of our Gr. 7 & 8 students will receive the Sacrament of confirmation.
May God bless them as they receive these precious gifts. It is such a joy watching
as our students participate in our faith and journey through our school system.
Our virtue of the month is compassion. We demonstrate compassion when we
see someone in need and reach out to them with care and understanding. Last
weekend our Gr. 7 & 8 students participated in the 24 hour famine bringing
awareness and raising money for the cause of world hunger. There actions were
living examples of compassion in action. During this month we are reminded of
the scripture verse,
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least
of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40
In May we also recognize Asian Canadian Heritage Month. It is a time when we
acknowledge and celebrate the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and
their contributions to Canada.
Best regards, P. Nelson

Red Apple Daycare
Corner
As the spring days have arrived, we
are looking forward to the month of May to
engage the children in our program in lots of
fun filled activities with lots of new and
exciting activities. Our focus in May will be
based on spring season and going outside to
explore our environment. We will be
including plants, insects, weather and other
topics will be based on children's interest and
what they would like to learn during these
warm months. As always, our focus will be
to intertwine literacy and math in all of our
learning components so that we are getting
children ready for school. We will also be
involved in sensory exploration such as
exploring spring flowers, observing
caterpillars, bugs and watching our garden
grow outside in our yard. We will have lots
discussions and talks based on those topics to
enhance their understanding and learning in
areas of nature and how to take care of
surroundings and our environment.
We will also be celebrating Victoria
Day and Mother Day, which is another
learning component of learning that will focus
on our history and the importance of family.
As we welcome warmer weather with lots of
sunshine, we welcome more of the outdoor
play time and bringing nature into our
classrooms!
Sincerely,
Red Apple Day Care

concert at Roy Thompson Hall, celebrating the poetry of

-the poem "Alligator Pie"
-the opera singer (soprano)
-seeing Dennis Lee
-the lullabye song
-seeing all the instruments on the stage
-the conductor was funny and made us laugh
-the Flight of the Bumblebee song
-we got to sing, dance and join in to the activities
Thanks Ms. Nelson for the fun trip!
THE WIZARD OF OZ By Ms. Henry
On Wednesday, April 27th, Ms. Cook, Ms. D’Arpino and Ms. Henry’s classes went to
the Young People’s Theatre production of The Wizard of Oz. The students
participated in drama workshops before and after the performance. These
workshops were enjoyed by all of the students who participated, but the real
highlight was the performance. As always, the Young People’s Theatre put on an
excellent production. We can’t wait to see what shows they put on next year!
APRIL FOOLS SHENANIGANS By Claudine Gregorio
April Fools was an exciting event for all who were involved. It all started with Claudine and
Alexia pranking Mrs. Rodriguez by wrapping her desk with saran wrap and chart paper it sure
was hard to clean up! Mrs. Rodriguez being the sneaky teacher she is mixed up our desks by
switching our name tags, mismatching our desks, and taping our desks together which was a
pain to put back together and fix just the way she wants it to be. Mrs. Rodriguez got our class
by telling us we have to exit the class for recess thinking she had to talk to another teacher
but we sure were wrong while we were out enjoying our splendid day she put baby powder
on our chairs making our pants white. To get Mrs. Rodriguez back for all the mischief she
caused us, the boys decided to go out and buy some toilet paper to put all over her desk!
She also made Mr. Calderon bring us cookies that were really filled with toothpaste some of
us accidentally ate the toothpaste filled cookies which were not delightful at all! The last
prank that has been pulled on that day was the boys going out to Mrs. Rodriguez’s car and
putting toilet paper all over. That was our joyful experience at St. John XXIII on April Fools.
We hope more pranks are to come!
