2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 2 DECEMBER 7, 2014

PASTOR’S CORNER

QUAD RECONCILIATION SERVICES This year the Quad Parishes are reducing the number of Reconciliation Services for both Advent and Lent. Instead of having four, we will have two. The numbers of those who attend these services made us make this change. We were gathering confessors, cantors, readers, preachers, and organists for four modestly attended services. Our hope is that this will be a better use of time for all of us. One thing the priest shortage is teaching us is that we have to be ready to go outside our parish at times to receive the services we once received there. I foresee that as there are fewer and fewer priests, not only will they have to move about more to provide ministry at more than one parish, but the Catholic people will also have to be willing to travel about a bit to receive that ministry. We will host the first Advent Reconciliation Service here on Wednesday, December 17, at 7 PM. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. People still ask how often to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. Of course, there is the rule that you have to confess any mortal sin within a year. But that states the extreme. Many of us do not commit mortal sins, and we know that Reconciliation is not necessary for the forgiveness of venial sins.

I think Advent and Lent are a good time to go to confession. It gives us an opportunity to consider our faults, to admit them openly, and to get a fresh start. Certainly the Penitential Act, the Lamb of God, and the Lord I am not Worthy as parts of the Mass are times when we openly admit our sins, and God forgives us. And certainly when we receive the Eucharist, all our venial sins are forgiven. Every time we make a sincere Act of Contrition, God forgives us. But there are those times when as we consider our sins, we sense it would be best to receive the Sacrament. There, by the priest acting in the person of Christ, all our sins are surely forgiven. There we speak the specifics of our sins out loud. There we can receive a word of encouragement and counsel from the confessor. And there we are truly reconciled, not only with God, but with the Church. We return to our baptismal innocence, and we walk away sensing the love of God. I never regret making a good confession. And celebrating it in communion with others heightens that experience even more than the individual rite. If you cannot participate right here at SJV a week from Wednesday, the other opportunity for reconciliation this Advent is on Saturday, December 20, at 9 AM at St. Mary’s Visitation. All of the priests of the Quad will also be available that morning. We will not have reconciliation here at SJV that morning.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR ALL Again this year we have purchased 2,000 books by Matthew Kelly to be distributed to everyone who comes to our parish for Christmas Masses. It is a great way to evangelize, make people feel welcome, and spread some Christmas joy. A generous couple has donated $1,000 toward this, and I am grateful for that. The cost of this can certainly be a paid out of our budget for adult formation and evangelization, but I want to offer you the opportunity to be an anonymous sponsor of this effort. Just write a check and designate it for the “Christmas Books.” Blessings, Fr. Ken Knippel

RECEPTION TO HONOR DEACON JOHN EBEL Deacon John will be honored for his service to the St. John Vianney Community following the 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM Masses on December 21 with receptions in the Church Hall. All parishioners are invited to showcase their baking skills at the reception. Please bring your muffins, cookies, coffeecake, or bars to the Church Hall kitchen on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. All are welcome to come to the Church Hall after the two Masses to thank Deacon John for eight years of dedication and service to the people of St. John Vianney Parish.

ELECTRONIC GIVING Don’t forget our new electronic giving site. Sign-up is quick and easy. If you have not already done so, please sign up. You can do it from the home page of the SJV website: www.stjohnv.org

PARISH SOCIAL AND VETERANS’ GATHERING Next Sunday, December 14, 2014, there will be a Parish Social after the 9 AM and 11 AM Masses in the Church Hall. Please plan to join with other parishioners in this celebration of community. And why not invite someone you see in Mass but don’t know? Or deliberately sit with someone who is sitting alone. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and help to create a spirit of warmth and welcome. Donuts, coffee and juice are available (free-will donations only.)

A special table is set aside at the 11:00 AM Mass for veterans and their families and friends, which is a great chance to meet other veterans in the parish and swap stories!

2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 6 DECEMBER 7, 2014

TODAY’S GOSPEL REFLECTION Prayer helps us create a straight path for

Jesus.

Children: What one activity will you do this week to prepare room in your life for God?

Adults: In order to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, what area or things in your life do you need to make straight?

ANGEL TREE: ALL GIFTS ARE DUE NEXT WEEKEND, DECEMBER 14, BY NOON

Thank you for the overwhelming response to fulfill a child’s Christmas wish. If you were not able to pick-up an Angel last weekend, check the tree in the Narthex this weekend…a few are still available. Volunteers in the Narthex will assist you in signing out your Angel. If you are unable to buy a gift, cash donations are welcomed to help with for late Angels that we are receiving.

Please wrap your gift. Peel off the backing on the Angel and stick the Angel securely to your package. Be sure to rip off the bottom portion of the angel that shows what you purchase. FUN FAMILY EVENT AT PRINCE OF PEACE CHURCH!

Our sister parish, Prince of Peace Parish, has invited the parishioners of St. John Vianney Parish to come to celebrate the feast of the Epiphany with them on Sunday, January 4. We would attend the 11:30 AM Mass with our friends at Prince of Peace and then stay for a presentation of the Christmas Story after Mass. There will be a pot luck get-together afterward. Please bring a dessert to share. If you would like to attend this event please email Martha at [email protected].

REPAIRERS OF THE BREACH BROWN BAG LUNCH

Celebrate an early Christmas by visiting the homeless at Repairers of the Breach on Friday, December 12. We will be carpooling from St. John Vianney, leaving at 11:30 AM. If you would like to join us or donate food, please call Jean Siegfried at 262-786-2313.

OPLATKI - CHRISTMAS WAFERS There is an old Polish, Slovak and Lithuanian tradition of sharing wafers at the Christmas Eve meal. As family members break a piece, everyone shares wishes of peace and love. Today it is often done at the Christmas day meal, and pieces can be mailed to those who can’t be with us at the table. Oplatki are available at the parish office (4 in a package ) for $1 a package.

POINSETTIA DONATIONS We will again decorate our worship space for Christmas with poinsettia plants which have been donated in the name of someone you love. If you

would like to take part in this memorial, order forms are available in the Narthex or the Parish Center. Prices for the plants are $15 and $20. Checks should be made payable to St. John Vianney and along with the form, mailed to 1755 N Calhoun Rd, Brookfield, WI 53005 or dropped off at the Office for Liturgy and Music or the Parish Office. Thank you for considering this way of making Christmas more meaningful for you and your family. The deadline for your memorials is Wednesday, December 17.
