“THINK TANK” DISCUSSION GROUP We recently had our first discussion gathering of our new group called The “Think Tank” and it was a very interesting evening! Our next get-together will be held this Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 PM in the rectory. Come and join us for some informal discussions on various topics. Everyone is welcome. BLESSED MOTHER DEVOTIONS IN OCTOBER Each Thursday evening in October, we will hold a special devotion to Our Blessed Mother. We will kick off these October Devotions with a special Healing Mass on Thursday, October 6th at 6:00 PM. The guest celebrant w ill be Fr . Mark Solomon from Christ the King Parish in Houtzdale. Before the Mass, the evening will also include the recitation of the rosary starting at 5:30 PM. Please join us for any or all of these devotions for your special intentions during this Year of Mercy and especially before our nation’s November elections. CCD STUDENTS MASS Next Sunday, October 2nd, will be our first CCD Mass for the new school year. The 3rd and 4th grade Religious Education students will be the lectors and helpers at the 10:15 AM Mass. All students from the Kindergarten through 5th grade CCD classes are asked to sit together with their teachers in the front pews. MASS INTENTIONS Since most of our past “pending” Mass intentions have been offered or will soon be offered, we are now accepting intentions for Masses for special occasions (Anniversaries, etc.) and for special intentions, such as those who are ill or who are in a specific need of extra prayers. We have current opening available. Please call the rectory (355-3134) to schedule your Mass intentions or if you have any questions. We are also scheduling 2017 Mass intentions. DIOCESAN HOLY FAMILY OBSERVANCE The “Diocesan Holy Family Observance” is a special celebration to be hosted by Bishop Mark Bartchak and the Vocations Endowment Committee. The affair will be held at the St. Michael the Archangel Basilica in Loretto, PA, on October 9th in conjunction with Columbus Day. There will be a recitation of the Rosary in the Basilica at 2:00 PM. Following the Rosary, Bishop Bartchak will celebrate Mass. Immediately following Mass, a dinner will be held in the Community Hall. All Knights, along with their family members, friends and all parishioners are invited to this special celebration. The cost of the dinner is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children 7 years old and under. Reservations must be made in advance as there will be no money transactions at the door the evening of the banquet. If you would like to attend, please submit your names along with a check to William Stasko, CPA, at address: 8 Entrance Drive, Johnstown, PA 15905. Names should be submitted singly, rather than Mr. and Mrs., in order to prepare individual name tags. Please note that the deadline for reservations is this Friday, September 30th. LATIN MASS CELEBRATION The next Latin Mass to be celebrated here at St. John’s Parish will be next Saturday, October 1st at 7:00 PM. This Mass is celebrated by a visiting priest from St. Vincent Archabbey and fulfills your Sunday obligation. There is usually a potluck social in St. John School Auditorium immediately following the Mass. All are welcome. If you have any questions regarding this “Extraordinary Form” Latin Mass, please call Devren at 404-9127 or visit the website at www.centrelatinmass.org. ALL-DAY ADORATION Our next All-Day Adoration will be held Monday, October 3rd. It will begin immediately following the 9:00 AM school Mass. The Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will close at 2:00 PM. Try to come and spend a quiet hour in the Presence of Our Blessed Lord.

SILVER CIRCLE MEMBERSHIP HELPS IHM SISTERS THANK YOU for those of you who have purchased tickets so far to help our retired Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters who reside at Our Lady of Peace in Scranton, PA. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, you can still help by becoming a member of the Silver Circle. After becoming a member, your membership form is entered into a monthly drawing from October through June where there are a total of 324 prize amounts from $50 —$1,000. ICON PAINTING WORKSHOP The Bethany Retreat Center in Frenchville is offering an oppor-tunity to learn about and create an icon painted in the ancient Byzantine style. Mary Kay Laplante will lead the class in creating an icon of the Mother of God, ‘Tenderness,’ using ancient techniques and all natural materials rich with symbolic mean-ing. Previous artistic experience is not necessary. Students re-ceive step-by-step instructions and all necessary materials will be provided. The underlying theology will be equally emphasized with each technical step demonstrated. The days will include class instruction and painting, personal prayer time, optional Centering Prayer, daily Mass and home cooked meals. The workshop will be held from November 6th - 12th (Sunday to Saturday). Arr ival is after 4:00 PM on Sunday with supper at 6:00 PM. Departure is on Saturday after 1:00 PM. The offering for the class is $800 per person with a nonrefundable deposit of $250 required. This amount includes lodging and meals for the week, class instruction and all icon materials. Partial scholarships are available. Save $15 by bring-ing your own single sheets and towels. Please indicate prior to your arrival if you have special dietary needs. For more information about the workshop, contact Mary Kay Laplante at [email protected] 2016 CROPWALK SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH There are 1 billion people in the world today who do not have enough to eat. In our own community the number of people who rely on the local food banks continues to climb. Hunger is a current problem that we can all help to solve. The organiza-tion, Church Wide Services, sponsors the CROPWALK annually for people throughout the United States to come together to walk to fight world hunger. This year’s CROPWALK will be held on Sunday, October 30th at Faith United Methodist Church at 512 Hughes Street in Bellefonte. The walk begins at 2:00 PM. Look for further information in the near future about joining in on the walk or sponsoring someone else who will be participat-ing. HOLY FAMILY PARISH, PORTAGE, BASKET PARTY Holy Family Parish in Portage will hold a BASKET PARTY next Sunday , October 2nd. The doors open at 1:00 PM and tickets will be sold until 2:15 PM. The drawings start at 2:30 PM. The parish is located at 509 Caldwell Avenue in Portage. The cost of the tickets are $5.00 which includes 25 entries of a basket of your choice, door prizes, dessert and beverages. 2016/2017 RCIA CLASSES RCIA is the Program the church uses to bring in new converts on a yearly basis. If you know someone who is interested in becoming Catholic, these classes are held each Sunday at 9:00 AM in the rectory basement. OUR SEWING GROUP “St. John’s In Stitches” Now that the summer months have passed, our Church’s Sewing Group, “St. John’s In Stitches” will hold their next meeting THIS Monday afternoon, September 26th at 3:00 PM in the rectory basement. The ladies are always working on a variety of projects and the group is open to anyone interested in sewing, knitting, crocheting or working with crafts, etc. New members are always welcome and they currently are especially in need of additional “sew-ers.” If you have any questions, you can reach Rosie Wood at 625-2902 or you can email her at the following address: [email protected]. Also, they gladly accept monetary and material donations anytime. CEMETERY CLEAN-UP Our cemetery maintenance crew will be doing a “Fall Clean-Up” next month. They are asking that all items be removed from the cemetery lots by Friday, October 14th. If you want to keep vases, etc. that were placed there over the summer, please take them off for safe keeping. After October 14th, they will be discarded.

As a reminder, no planting of permanent flowers, shrubs or trees are per-mitted at any of the grave sites. “ALL GOD’S ANGELS COME TO US DISCUISED.”

NEW PARISH & SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS Anyone wishing to volunteer at St. John Parish or School in activities that involve children must complete state and diocesan requirements. It does take 4-6 weeks to complete these requirements, so plan to complete these clearances well in advance of any scheduled volunteer activities. Please call Mrs. Wendt in the school office at 355-7859 with any questions. RACE FOR EDUCATION St. John School will be conducting our 8th annual “Race for Education” on Friday, October 28. The funds from this event help us to provide quality education with affordable tuition. This is our largest fundraiser and its success helps us to determine the need for additional fundraisers. Over the past seven years, we have raised almost $100,000 through donations to this event. Watch future bulletins and the school website for more information. K OF C SOUP SALAD DINNER The Knights of Columbus will hold their annual, very popular “Soup & Salad Dinner” next month. They will feature at least 14 different homemade soups, including Crab, Chicken Noodle, Cheese-burger, Stuffed Pepper, Zuppa Toscano, Hot Sausage, Vegetarian, Tortellini, Potato, Ham & Bean, Chicken Rice and Chili. In addition to the soups, there will be lots of salads and desserts, breads and beverages. This is an “All-You-Can-Eat” dinner and the cost is only $8.00 a person. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES Our Religious Education Classes for Kindergarten through 10th Grade students are held each Sunday morning from 9:00—10:00 AM in St. John School classrooms. Please note that some of the classroom locations have been changed for this year’s classes. All K indergarten or new students to the program need to be registered. Parents of those students should fill out a form located on the table in the rear of the church. Direct any questions to the rectory office at 355-3134 or to Mark & Denise Leskovansky at 355-3278. Forms can be filled out and returned to the school office during the CCD class hour. 11TH GRADE CONFIRMATION CLASSES The next class for the 11th Grade Confirmation group will be next Sunday, October 2nd. The meetings will be held from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the rectory basement meeting room. Their next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 12th. ADULT CHOIR SEEKS NEW MEMBERS The Adult Choir is starting up once again this fall. During the past 2 years there has been a substantial drop in personnel for various reasons. So they are actively recruiting new members. The Adult Choir traditionally sings at the 8:00 AM Mass and is run by Jay Zimmerman. If you enjoy singing, please consider becoming a part of the music ministry. You can contact Jay at 383-4385. The Adult Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings. CD OF A MEETING CHANGE Catholic Daughters, please note that the next CD of A monthly meeting will be held on a different day. Our first Blessed Mother Devotion will be held on the first Thursday of October with a Healing Mass that evening at 6:00 PM. Therefore, The Catholic Daughters’ October meeting will be held on Thursday, October 13th. The social begins at 6:30 PM and the regular meeting starts at 7:00 PM. The social chairpersons are Karen Pipta, Gerry Dreese, Marian Wayne and Theresa Riglin. We hope this change will allow our members to attend the devotion.
