SECOND COLLECTION April 29, 2018 will be for Catholic Home Missions.

A note for you:

How should a person be baptized? By submersion in water or by pouring water on his head? There is a lot of disagreement about this among Christian Churches. Since the word “baptize” comes from a Greek word meaning “dip”, “submerge”, some say that only baptism by submersion is valid. Others say that baptism by pouring is just as valid as baptism by submersion. We catholics believe that both ways of baptizing are valid. The Bible Itself doesn’t tell us how to baptize. One way to solve the problem is to look at how baptisms were done in the very beginning of the Church. The oldest document we have that talks about baptism in the Church is a writing called the “Didache”, written sometime between the time Jesus returned to heaven and the year 150. In Chapter 7 of the Didache we read: “And concerning baptism, baptize this way: After reviewing all of this teaching, baptize in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in living (running) water. But if living water is not available, then baptize into other water; and cold is preferred, but if not available in warm. But if neither is available, pour water three times upon the head in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” This shows what was being done by the Church at the very beginning. For this reason we believe that both baptism by submersion and baptism by pouring are valid. Both have the same purpose. They signify purification, washing away person-al sin and original sin, needed to be received into the commu-nity of the followers of Jesus.

“How marvelous it would be if, at the end of the day, each of us could say: today I have performed an act of charity towards others.” Papa Francisco
