Respect Life Prayer Service
As members of St. John the
Baptist we are called to observe
January 22 as a particular day of
prayer for an end to abortion and
a greater respect for all
human life. We will hold a
Respect Life Prayer Service on
January 22 at 6 p.m.
and hope to see many
of our parish members
join us in prayer for
the restoration of the
legal guarantee of the
right to life.
Increasing and Decreasing
Those committed to the twelve steps of AA for
their recovery from alcoholism or drug addiction
have a succinct way of summarizing the task of
recovery. That task is simply to realize, “There is
a higher power and I am not it.” Though not a
twelve-stepper, John the Baptist said the same
thing in different words.
John the Baptist was such a dominant presence in the early
Church that the author of the Gospel of John has to labor to move to
the side so Jesus can take center stage. Fortunately, John the Baptist
slides over willingly and eagerly, asserting, “I am not the Messiah”
and “Behold, the Lamb of God” (John 1: 20, 36) Now, in his last di-
rect words to his disciples, John trumpets, “He must increase; I must
decrease” (John 3:30) John embodies the gift Jesus gives, according
to the First Letter of John: “discernment to know the one who is true
(1 John 5:20).”
John knew who he wasn’t because he so deeply knew who he was,
“the voice of one crying out in the desert” (John 1: 23). To the extent
that we know our identity as beloved creatures of God and intimate
disciples of Jesus we will be able to acknowledge Jesus as God and
move ourselves to the side. Otherwise, we will keep plopping down as
though we are the God of most every situation, knowing neither who
we are nor who we aren’t.
