Kindness An act of kindness done to anyone, for love of God, inevitably brings God’s blessing down upon that person. In the First reading, we see that a woman receives her greatest desire – to have a child – because she gave hospitality to Elisha, whom she knew to be a holy man of God. Our

Lord likewise promises rewards to those who have shown kindness to another out of love for Him, even if only a cup of cold water.

Often an act of kindness costs us little, by way of time or expense. Think for a moment of the many different types of acts of kindness that you do today, tomorrow or sometime during the upcoming week, as a real sign of love for God. It could be a phone call, a visit to some person or persons, preparing food for someone, holding a door for another, being less aggressive in driving, taking someone shopping or to the doctor’s office, a kind or encouraging word, helping someone with a work project, spending more time with family members. Not taking advantage of someone’s weakness.

Everyone is different and has individual circumstances of life, some are more outgoing, and others more shy, yet everyone has daily opportunities, to show kindness to others. There is a book called: THE HIDDEN POWER OF KINDNESS by Father Lawrence Lovasick. Its subtitle is: A practical handbook for souls who dare to transform the world, ONE DEED at a time. In the back of his book the author has an appendix in which he asks the question: How kind are you? He then goes on to give six pages of questions to ponder concerning our kindness towards others in thought, word and deed.

However, most of us really don’t need a book to point out how we fail in showing kindness to others. We know! Our lack or patience, our lack of generosity, insistence to have our own way, being obnoxious, resentful, angry, harsh, selfish, indifference towards others, unwillingness to forgive, a love for gossip and stirring up trouble, etc. Those who know us best and love us, often give us subtle hints on how we could change to be better.

And a short daily examination of conscience at night on our thoughts, words and deeds of the day, often can help us to see for ourselves what we need to change, to become more Christ-like.

I’ll conclude in the words of Saint Augustine: “Charity and kindness distinguishes between the children of God and the children of the Devil. Everyone may sign themselves with the sign of the cross; all may respond “Amen” to their prayers and sing “Alleluia”; all may be baptized, and come to Church. But we can discern the children of God from the children of the Devil by their charity and kindness.”

CCD Teacher in the Spotlight: Marie Schreier

Marie was an assistant teacher in

the Second Grade classroom since

the fall of 2011. She shared with

me that for the most part it was

rewarding and enjoyable years teaching and preparing

youth for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy

Communion. One thing that stood out for her is the

responses the children gave to questions asked to them.

Thank you Marie for sharing your faith and talents with

our youth and CCD teachers. You are a blessing to all of

us and will be missed.
