Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend is the 2010 Pledge Weekend for the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. The theme is “Fulfilling the Corporal Works of Mercy.” It comes from St. Matthew’s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us with the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; clothe the naked; shelter the homeless; visit the sick; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. As you know, the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal provides the primary funding for most of the educational and social programs managed by the Archdiocese of Newark. The lives of thousands of people are touched and, in some cases, profoundly impacted by the outreach that would not be possible without the appeal’s financial support. Your generosity last year, which helped our parish to not only meet its goal but also to surpass its stretch goal, brought a rebate to our parish of $81,232.25, our highest ever. I hope and pray that we will be able to do as well or even better for both our parish and our Archdiocese this year. Our 2010 goal is $85,661.00, and our stretch goal is $228,629.50. As of last Sunday, those who have already mailed their pledges into the Archdiocese for this year’s appeal have given a total of $83,902.50, almost our goal. I count on every family to participate in some way this year, to help us meet or exceed our stretch goal once again. Your support of this appeal is part of your sacrificial tithe. Together, we really can continue to make a difference in our archdiocese and in our parish!

+++ Our Spring 40 Days for Life campaign at the Women’s Choice Abortion Clinic, 10 Zabriskie St. in Hackensack, begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17th. You are invited to the “Cast the Vision” pre-launch rally this afternoon, February 7th, from 1:30 to 2:30pm at Holy Trinity Parish Center, 43 Maple Avenue, Hackensack. This afternoon’s gathering is a moment to draw courage from the successes of the fall campaign, to learn the components and objectives of the spring campaign, to remember the critical necessity for us to remain vigilant, and to stir within us once again that determination to answer God’s call, much as the first Apostles did when Jesus called them in today’s Gospel. On February 16th, pro-life people of every denomination will gather at Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack at 7pm for the official kickoff of the campaign. Rev. Clenard Childress, Pastor of New Calvary Baptist Church in Montclair and Director of the Life Education and Learning Network, who is known on radio as the Urban Prophet, will be the guest speaker. For more information, go to 40daysforlife.com/hackensack or call Lorraine at 201-384-3947. I hope many of you will dedicate some time this Lent to pray in vigil in Hackensack.

+++ I invite all men to consider attending our Men’s Cornerstone Retreat next weekend. Applications are available at the exits of the church. The Women’s Cornerstone will be March 5-6, and they may use the same application form. Also in March, the Archdiocese will be hosting two successive Saturday events at Seton Hall University: on Saturday, March 13, the Catholic Men’s Conference, entitled “Champions of Faith”; on Saturday, March 20, the Catholic Women’s Conference. For more information on the men’s conference, or to register, see the flyer at the church doors or go to www.rcan.org/menscommission or call 973-497-4545. Information on the Women’s Conference will be forthcoming shortly.

Scripture Reflection: Going Deep Some of the best fishing stories are in the Bible. Take Jonah and the whale, or the time Jesus told Peter to catch a fish containing the coin needed to pay their taxes. One of the most moving accounts of the cost of discipleship is found at the end of John’s Gospel, when the risen Jesus encounters a boatload of fishermen on the Sea of Tiberias. The Gospel writers sensed in Jesus’ command to head out into deep water an invitation to all the baptized to “go deep” if they wanted to grasp the mystery of His death and resurrection. Our own journey of faith will hold many dark nights of catching nothing, followed by the experience of being caught up once again in God’s love.

Word of Life Human persons are not to be understood merely from the perspective of their past histories or from...the present...We must always see in other human beings persons with whom we shall one day share God’s joy. We must look upon them as persons who are called, together with us, to be members of the Body of Christ, with whom we shall one day sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and with Christ himself, as their brothers and sisters, as the brothers and sisters of Christ, and as children of God.—Pope Benedict XVI

Transfiguration Academy: A Parent’s Observations

The following remarks were given at one of our three co-sponsoring parishes’ Catholic Schools Week Opening Mass: “Good Morning! My name is Phyllis Adams and I am the proud parent of a seventh grader at Transfiguration Academy. When Mr. Tralongo first asked me to speak, my first inclination was to speak about the curriculum. As a National Board Certified Reading Teacher, I am often asked to serve on committees to oversee curriculum, so I can say from my professional point of view that the curriculum at Transfiguration Academy is second to none! “Our Language Arts department stimulates the creative thought process through reading and writing. Our scores on the Archdiocesan writing assessment always surpass state norms and our students are challenged to reward from various genres and are encouraged to think outside the box in their class discussions. “By staying on the cutting edge of instructional practice, methodologies, and theories, our Math department is positioned to prepare 21st Century learners. Through the use of Smart Technologies, our students are exposed to algebraic concepts as well as learn to trade stocks in the “Stock Market” game. I can honestly say I am astounded by what my son can do, thanks to the dedication of the wonderful teachers at Transfiguration Academy. “Just recently, he and several other 7th and 8th graders competed at Rutgers University in the “Future Cities” competition. I could not believe the critical thinking and the thought process that went into the design of their cities. “Our students do not read and regurgitate answers in separate academic subjects; they learn through cross-curricular instruction and apply what is learned to real life situations. That is true learning! “But, just as much as I commend Transfiguration for academic excellence, it is because of the spirituality it instills in each student that I am most thankful. When I see the reverence in my son as he serves as an altar server, or discuss our faith with him, I am in awe of the way the school has equipped him with the skills to be a faith-filled adolescent! Our school is truly a community of faith. Our teachers see each child as an individual. When I prepared for my Children’s Liturgy discussion today, I concentrated on our second reading and could not help but think that these lines from this reading embody the teachers at Transfiguration Academy: “‘Love is patient and kind; not jealous or boastful. It is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not resentful. It does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things hopes all things, endures all things. So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.’ “Transfiguration Academy is Love!”

Retrouvaille (“Rediscovery”) Marriage is a sacrament. It is about love, weddings, romance, and anniversary dinners. But it is also about confrontation, balancing budgets, housekeeping and dealing with difficult children. RETROUVAILLE (“Rediscover”) is a program of the Catholic Church designed to provide help and support to married couples who are in difficult relationships. The program is three-fold and begins with a weekend experience on March 19-21, 2010.
