2011 Lenten Regulations 1. The days of both *Fast and *Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday (Mar. 9th) and Good Friday (Apr.22nd). The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. *On a day of Fast ~ only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. *On a day of Abstinence ~ no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the Law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 13, 2011 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, June 19, 2011. *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

Adoration and Stations of the Cross Join us during Lent for Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays (starting March 16th) between 12noon and 6:30pm in the main church, concluding with Benediction. Join us for the traditional Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent, (starting March 11th) at 6:30pm in Spanish and 7:00pm in English in the main church. No confessions on the Fridays of Lent, due to the Stations services.

Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On November 27, 2011, the English-speaking Catholic Church in the United States will begin using a new translation of the prayers that are used at Mass. A series of questions and answers on this topic will appear here each week to help explain the thinking behind these changes. Please consider today’s item below.

Who is doing the work of translation?

The process of translating liturgical texts from the original Latin is a highly consultative work done by several groups. The International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) prepares English translations of liturgical texts on behalf of the conferences of bishops of English-speaking countries. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the other member conferences receive draft translations of each text and have the opportunity to offer comments and suggestions to ICEL. Then ICEL proposes a second draft, which each conference approves and submits to the Vatican for final approval. Each conference reserves the right to amend or modify a particular text.

At the Vatican, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments examines the translated texts, offers authoritative approval (recognitio) of the texts, and grants permssion for their use. Currently, the Congregation is aided by the recommendations of Vox Clara, a special committee of bishops and consultants from English-speaking countries. The translation and review process is guided by the guidelines in Liturgiam Authenticam, issued in 2001, an instruction for the Congregation that outlines the principles and rules for liturgical translation. Reflection on Today’s Gospel

A woman was shopping for a new dress and found the most stunning creation she had ever seen. But it was outrageously expensive—$500. She knew she just had to have it. If she didn’t snap it up, it would soon be gone. Despite the mortgage and many overdue household bills, she bought it. That evening she modeled it for her husband, who asked, “How much did it cost?”

She told him, and he leaped out of his chair. “How could you? You know we’re scrimping to pay the mortgage!”

She explained that she was tempted beyond her ability to resist. The husband said, “When you’re tempted, tell the devil to get behind you.”

“I did,” she answered, “And he bent close to my ear and said, ‘It looks great from the back, too!’”

In today’s Gospel, the devil tries all his tricks to tempt Jesus in the desert. The season of Lent provides us with a great test of our own ability to resist temptation. With Jesus’ help, we really can do it!

Sacraments Penance - Monday-Thursday 7:00pm-7:20pm. (No confessions on the Fridays of Lent.) Saturday: 1:00pm-2:00pm and immediately following the 5:30pm Mass or by appointment with a priest at any time. Baptisms are normally held the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of each month at 1:30pm.* Instructions for parents are normally held the 1st Sunday of each month at 1:30pm in the basement of the Parish Life Center. These instructions are required of parents having their first child Baptized. All parents must be registered parishioners and present child’s birth certificate at the time of arranging for the baptism. The Opportunity Scholarship Act OSA is a scholarship bill that is making its way through the NJ Legislature. The bill will allow poor families who live in failing public school districts to apply for scholarships to attend other public and nonpublic schools that can better prepare them for successful futures. The Bishops of NJ have endorsed this scholarship bill. Although OSA is gaining momentum, we would be grateful for your help as the bill moves closer to becoming a law. Over the next month, it is critically important to take a few minutes to contact your state legislators and ask them to support the OSA.
