Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I, like most of you I would suppose, was certainly surprised to wake up last Monday morning and hear of Pope Benedict XVI’s announced resignation. Although not without precedent, albeit over 600 years ago, it is a reminder that even the Pope is a human being. Recognizing the many responsibilities the office entails, and the limited physical capacity advanced aging brings, he wisely discerns that the Spirit is calling for someone more capable of fully leading the Church in today’s world. Let us pray for him, and for a conclave which will elect his successor next month.

+++

Thank you to those who continue to make their pledges for the 2013 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. 110 families have now pledged $38,958.00 toward our goal of $95,687.00. We always go well over the goal as the weeks progress; the closer we get to the stretch goal of $222,318.00, the more money is returned for our parish use. Please make your pledge today either by returning the form you received in the mail to the chancery or by filling out a form in the brochures in the church and return it to us at the rectory.

+++

Postponed from last weekend due to the blizzard, today you are asked to sign post cards to our national legislators as part of the U.S. Bishops’ “Life and Liberty” campaign. The pre-printed cards express your opinion that our government must not force Americans to violate their religious and moral beliefs on respect for life when they provide health care or sponsor or purchase health coverage. President Obama has recently indicated his willingness to adjust some of the provisions of the Affordable Health Care Act to respect our religious convictions, but our legislators also need to be told of our concerns. The cards, in English and in Spanish in limited numbers, will be available at the exits of the church. Please use a pen to sign the set of three and place the completed set in boxes nearby. They will be properly addressed and mailed during the week. Thank you!

Two wonderful opportunities to join with Catholics from all over the Archdiocese will be provided at Seton Hall in South Orange: “We Walk by Faith!” - A Catholic Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 2; and “Rediscover the Joy of Believing: the Year of Faith and the New Evangelization” - A Women’s Commission Day of Reflection on Saturday, March 9. Both are prayerful, spirit-filled, life changing experiences! The men’s day begins at 8am and ends around 4pm; the women’s day begins at 9am and ends at 5:15pm. Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Myers on both occasions. A dynamic lineup of speakers is scheduled for each day! Ticket price is $25 for adults, $20 for students and senior citizens, and priests and religious free, including breakfast and lunch. For registration, please visit the websites at www.rcanmenscommission.org or www.rcan.org/womcom, or telephone the registrar for either day at 973-497-4545. For more information, contact Deacon Jim for the men’s day and Mary Cox for the women’s day. Registration is suggested by February 15th for the Men’s Conference and February 22nd for the Women’s Day in order to secure a seat. Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The account of Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness states that Jesus was under the influence of the Holy Spirit. In each temptation Jesus is challenged to prove that he is the Son of God. Ultimately, he shows himself faithful whereas Israel was not. Just as Jesus was tempted as he began and as he continued his ministry to turn aside from his mission, his followers will be, too. The three temptations speak to our own experience when we seek self-gratification rather than the glory of God. God’s word today calls us to make God our true nourishment, our true wealth, our faithful source of strength, and the solid foundation of our trust. Paul’s bold proclamation to the Romans extends to us: The Lord enriches all who call upon him. All who call on him will be saved.

“Lord Jesus, as you had the help of the Spirit to turn aside from the temptations that came to you during the time in the desert and the years of your ministry, help us to turn to this same Spirit to help us in our efforts to grow in faith, hope, and charity this Lent. Amen.”

“Altar Linen Makeover” One feature/aspect that enhances the beauty of Liturgical celebrations is the altar linens. Each liturgical season has its color code like purple for Lent, blue-hued violet for Advent, green for Ordinary Time, etc. The Liturgy Committee of St. John desires to have new sets for both the Upper and Lower Church. Most of the few that we presently have are quite old and fading. In this regard, we are soliciting donations and sponsors for the purchase of new and complete sets for all the liturgical seasons. You can make a donation in memory of a loved one or for any other intention. If interested, kindly contact Fr. Arcadio at 201-384-0101.
