School Charisms Compassion, Forgiveness & Desire for Unity
In Harmony Nidja Noongar Boodjar Noonook Nyininy
Lord, may these ashes be a sign to us that our Lent has begun.
Bless our Lent with holiness and happiness.
Help these days to be days of blessing
as we show that we are hungry for change.
Walk with us, Jesus, and bring us your light.
Amen.
Ash Wednesday is the time when we pause and repent, showing a connection to Jesus’ words and actions by bearing the ashen cross on our foreheads. Repentance, reconciliation, fasting, prayer and almsgiving, through Project Compassion, are all ways that the Lenten season can have an impact on our lives.
Lent is a time to renew our relationship with God and with each other. As a school community we can also pay careful attention to how we show Compassion, Forgiveness and a Desire for Unity to all those around us and to ourselves in our daily lives.
Dear Parents
Parent Teacher Meetings
Parent teacher meetings were held last Monday. Thanks to the teachers for their preparation and to those parents that took the opportunity to meet the teacher to hear information about class structures, expectations and events. It was very encouraging to see increased numbers on last year’s attendance.
A Great Start!
It has been wonderful to see that the start of this year certainly seems to have brought with it a much calmer environment in and around the school.
P&F Bush Dance Evening
Tomorrow night, Friday 16 February, the P&F are holding a beginning of year bush dance on the school grounds. It will provide a great social occasion and a chance to catch up with both new parents and old friends. Who wouldn’t rather be outside in the cool of the evening in current weather conditions. Last year was a great turnout. I encourage you to be a part of building this wonderful school community through your attendance at this function. I look forward to seeing you there!
Commitment Mass
On Sunday, 25 February at 9:30am, the St John Paul II Parish will be celebrating a Commitment Mass. Children participating in a Sacramental program this year are required to attend. The school staff, along with representatives from the School Board and P&F will also be attending to commit themselves to the challenges ahead and to working in the best interests of
the children, school and church. We will also welcome new staff to the school. We look forward to seeing you there!
Safety Drills
Over the coming weeks the school will be involved in both a lock-down and evacuation drill. We usually wait for parents to leave the premises but be aware it could happen at any time.
Upcoming Events
Labour Day (Public Holiday) is Monday 5 March. The Thursday and Friday prior (1 & 2 March) are Pupil Free Days as staff will be in-serviced on a new writing program to be introduced into the school.

ST JOHN PAUL II CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL COMMISSIONING MASS On Sunday, February 25th, there will be a special commissioning and commitment ceremony during the 9.30am Mass in the school undercover sacred space area, concluding with morning tea at 10.30AM. All students preparing to receive the Sacraments this year are expected to attend the commissioning Mass with their parents - It is an essential part of the enrolment to be able to receive the Sacraments this year. If you are unsure if your child should be receiving a Sacrament this year, the following guide* may assist you: *Please note that children can still receive the Sacraments in a different year level (eg: A Year 5 student may celebrate their First Eucharist, or a Year 6 may be preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation). If your child is not baptised and you would like this to happen please contact Fr Vinh, the Parish Priest, at the Presbytery on 6400 0276.
On Sunday, students will be asked to bring forward their commitment form below. (A copy of this has been distributed to classes and there will be some spare copies available as you enter on Sunday as well).
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is usually celebrated by Baptised Catholics in Year 3 The Sacrament of Eucharist (Holy Communion) is usually celebrated by Baptised Catholics in Year 4 The Sacrament of Confirmation is usually celebrated by children in Year 6 who have already received the Eucharist.
Reminder to Choir & Band students:
All band and choir students will be playing at this 9.30am Mass on Feb 25. Please arrive before 9.15am Thank you

JOHN FERNANDEZ MUSIC LESSONS Hello, my name is John Fernandez. I've been teaching music for over 30
years in primary and secondary schools around Perth. I am a WAAPA graduate, with a major in jazz guitar and a minor in piano. I have a teaching
degree and am registered with the WA Teacher's Registration Board and have a current Working With Children card. As well as teaching, I'm currently the
keyboard player and singer in the band, Nchant. I also play and sing at church, as well as do solo and duo gigs. I am married, with five children, and
you'll find that I'm reliable, communicative and organised. I have a high retention rate with my students, who seem to love coming to their lessons,
and I look forward to helping your child in their music education.
$30 for individuals and $15 for groups (2 to 5 students). All lessons would be 30 minutes.

RAINBOWS PROGRAM
Dear Parents, We are very pleased to have the Rainbows Program at St John Paul II Catholic Primary School again this year. Rainbows offers children from families who have experienced a major loss, either through the separation/divorce of parents or through the death of a family member, the opportunity to meet in a weekly support group over a period of 12 weeks. The sessions will be held at school with a trained adult working with each group and will last for approximately 45 minutes each. It has been found that when something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve, the children do also. Because of their age and short life experience, children can find it very difficult to verbalise their feelings. If you would like your child to be included, please fill in the tear off slip and return it to the school office by February 28th. This offer will be made available to children from Pre-Primary- Year 6. If your child is part of a single parent or stepfamily or if they are struggling through a painful experience this will be an opportunity for them to meet with others in similar situations in a safe and confidential atmosphere. If you feel the Rainbows program will be helpful for your child, please complete the form below and return to the school office. If you would like to discuss the program further, please feel free to contact me at the school.
Yours sincerely Lesley Bird Social Worker St John Paul II Catholic Primary School ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I, _________________ would like my child to be part of the rainbows program. Communication Ministry Welcome to 2018! We are The Communication Ministry and every fortnight we will contribute our thoughts, feelings and experiences to the newsletter. We welcome all new students and teachers to St JPIICPS and we are looking forward to getting to know you! This fortnight we are all working on using our Confidence Key. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you see something you aren’t comfortable with in a situation, or if you see someone who might need a friend. Yesterday we joined together for Ash Wednesday Mass. We use this day to mark the beginning of the season of Lent which is a time of reflection and sacrifice. Thank you to all who supported Icy Pole Thursday today. We appreciate your support as we fundraise for our camp next term. Each fortnight we will include a quote that we feel reflects current school focus or events. ‘Why blend in when you are born to stand out’ – R J Palacio
