Welcome To Saint John Fisher

We are a welcoming Parish. Whatever your present status in the Catholic Church, whatever your current family or marital situation, your past or

present religious affiliation, your personal history, age, background, race or color, sexual orientation, your self-esteem: you are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected by the Catholic Community of St. John Fisher.

Father’s Day Novena In honor of all fathers, we will be having a Novena of Masses starting on Father’s Day, June 20. Mass cards are available in the narthex and the parish office. You may use the special envelope provided and drop it in the collection basket or at the parish office.

New Leader in Parish Religious Education A few months ago I announced that Margaret Johnson, our Director of Religious Education, would be retiring on June 30. At that time I said that my next challenge is to find her replacement and that I hoped to have someone hired by June 15, so that he or she can work with Mrs. Johnson with the transition. I am happy to announce that I have hired her successor: Justin Fontenot. He is presently Director of Confirmation, Youth Ministry, and Young Adult Ministry at St. Philomena Church, in Carson. He has a B.A. in Theology and Catechetics from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, and has a number of years of experience in religious education. You will get to know him better once he arrives. In the meantime we will be having a special send off for Margaret Johnson on June 27 at the 9 am Mass. She deserves our gratitude.

Msgr. David A. Sork Pastor

Diane Hewitt: Liturgical Environment Consultant Extraordinaire Last year Diane Hewitt informed me that she would be retiring as chair of the Liturgical Environment Committee. With all the chaos of this pandemic, I realized that I had not had a chance to thank her for all the work she has done over the years. She has been actively involved in this ministry since 2004 when she first came to the parish and offered her services. She was more than a gifted decorator of the church. She came with experiences at other parishes in liturgical environment. When we began planning for the new church, I appointed her as chair of the Arts Committee. During that phase she was part of the committee deciding on the crucifix and stations for the church as well as the designs for the church furnishings. She was always intent on making sure that the decorations chosen were appropriate for the liturgical feast or season. I am grateful for all that Diane has done and know that those who follow will put their own personal touch on it. However, they have a wonderful precedent because of what Diane has done. Her legacy perdures in so much of what you see in our beautiful church.

Teen Confirmation - Registration Starts in June

High school Confirmation Registration begins in June. SJF Confirmation consists of a 2-year program, open to incoming 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in Fall 2021. If you would like to get on our list, please email Ricardo Mata at [email protected] with your student’s name, grade, and include the parent’s name and email address.

Home is Holy: The spectacular kingdom of God

You’ve probably been to the Magic Kingdom at Disneyland. It is an amazing place, isn’t it? There are so many things to see, and the day ends with spectacular fireworks! In today’s Gospel, we read that God’s kingdom is spectacular too - but in a very different way. There are no loud sounds, unusual sights, or fast rides. Jesus compares his kingdom to a tiny seed that secretly begins to grow underground. When the time is right, the plant emerges and becomes a great tree that gives shade and shelter. God does not want to shock our senses; instead he wants to capture our attention with wonder and awe and challenge us to share this with others until his kingdom gives shelter to all who come looking for his love.

Religious Education Registration Opening Soon

Registration for Religious Education classes, preschool-Grade 8, will open soon. Classes will be offered in person. Families registered for Religious Education classes in 2020-21 will be e-mailed the link for registration as soon as it is available. We will also e-mail the link to the families that were registered in 2019-20. New families wishing to register should contact Ricardo Mata, Faith Formation Assistant, at [email protected].

Gospel Recap: “Let It Take You Over”

Jesus was a big threat to the powerful people in his day. He was able to reach his audience by telling simple stories effectively, like the one in this week’s Gospel, and the powerful leaders wanted to silence him. The mus-tard seed is the smallest seed that spreads quickly and stubbornly. It can take over an entire garden. According to Jesus, God’s Kingdom can grow in the same way. It can spread quickly through all areas and relationships in our lives. So ask yourself the question, “Does God’s Kingdom invade all areas of my life - school, sports, family, work, friends, weekend, and my wallet?” Now think about this, “Do I let Jesus’ values of compassion, respect, forgiveness, and sacrifice for the powerless, take root in all those areas?” The closer you get to being a disciple for Jesus, the more you won’t feel right unless you let his Word put forth large branches of cover

for all his people. Then you’ll see how the actions of your life will gradually begin to provide the “shade” for those in our world who desperately need it.

Military Ministry - Thank You! Dear St. John Fisher Parishioners, thank you very much for your generous support of the Armed Forces and Memorial Day collection. In addition to many bags and boxes of supplies for the Bob Hope USO at LAX we also received cash donations totaling $4,300. you for remembering and supporting our military men and women who have served this country in the past and who currently serve this country.

Food Pantry Collection The Food Pantry Ministry will be distributing grocery bags the weekend of June 19-20, and collecting the bags on the weekend of June 26-27. Your donations of nonperishable food, toiletries and monetary donations help serve three local charities, Sisters of Rolling Hills, Peter & Paul Poverty and Harbor Interfaith, and their work with the poor. We are actively seeking volunteers to help at each of the Masses. Volunteers distribute food bags after Mass one week, collect them before Mass the following week and help load the bags when the charities pick them up. The remaining current Food Drive Dates for this calendar year are: June 26-27, September 18-19 and November 5-6. If you would like to participate with the Food Pantry Ministry, please contact: Frank Brown: [email protected].

Did you know? Avoiding sexting and building healthy relationships When teens start dating, they often feel pressure to keep up with their peers and to explore new romantic feelings. But these feelings, combined with teenage hormones and decision-making capabilities, can lead to some poor choices, including sexting. Sending nude images is dangerous and puts the sender and the receiver at risk. Photos can be shared instantly on cell phones and social media, and once out there, the images never go away. Talk to your teen about the consequences of sexting and the importance of building healthy relationships where partners respect boundaries and don’t ask for explicit images. Stewardship Reflection

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.” 2 Corinthians 5:10

We are all accountable for all of the gifts God has given us, our time, our talent and our treasure; everything we have and everything we are. Each of us is accountable not only for our own life but for the lives of others as well. One day God will ask each of us what did we do with the gifts we were given. How will you respond?

Connecting the Gospel

We find a familiar refrain in today’s gospel where the one that was considered least (“ the smallest of all seeds”) turns into the greatest (“becomes the largest of plants”). Once again, Jesus calls us to look with new eyes at the world that surrounds us. Just as the tiny mustard seed can grow to provide shelter for “the birds of the sky,” we should not underestimate the power and potential of the small to become mighty. This is the way with the kingdom of God, where, as Mary proclaims in the Magnificat, “God has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.”

Volunteers Needed-Pre-Baptism Ministry

Do you enjoying working with young families? Are you excited at the opportunity in welcoming the youngest of God’s people into the Catholic faith? If so, please consider joining the pre-baptism Ministry. Training will be provided. Commitment is a couple Monday evenings throughout the year. Pre-baptism classes are held online, using Zoom, on the second Monday of the month. You would be trained as a facilitator for these classes. Please consider this very rewarding ministry. Call or email the Office of Evangelization for more information: 310-377-4573 or [email protected].

Archaeology and the Holy Land

The Growing in the Word series continues with a new online offering that started June 9th. The series Archaeology and the Holy Land will be presented in four sessions. This series provides an opportunity to learn about people and places of the Bible, helping us to contextualize the ancient world of the past and how it applies to the world of today. New sessions will be released every two weeks on the St. John Fisher website: www.sjf.org. Click on the Faith Formation tab and then Bible Studies.
