Catholic Ministries: Archbishop Schnurr sends his thanks to everyone from St. John’s who pledged to the 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal during Catholic Ministries Appeal Commitment Weekend. If you have not yet made your pledge, please consider doing so this week. You will find extra pledge envelopes in the pews for your convenience. For more information, please visit CatholicAppeal.info. Thank You!

Drinking Clean Water in Pakistan – This week, we focus our prayers, fasting and almsgiving on Pakistan, where poor communities often do not have access to clean water. CRS helps communities build water pumps so they can have clean water nearby for use at home and on their farms. This week, consider fasting from all beverages except for water, and donate what you saved to your Rice Bowl.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 10, 2013

Our Rosary… Around the year 1700, the thoughts used in the Rosary started to become narratives. St. Louis de Montfort composed the most common set of narratives that eventually became used as meditations for each decade of the Rosary. These narratives were divided into five Joyful, five Sorrowful, and five Glorious meditations that are referred to as “mysteries.” Just recently, in 2002, Pope John Paul II introduced another set of five meditations referred to as the “Luminous Mysterie.”

Make a sacrifice for our 1,000 mission dioceses in Africa and Asia working to share our Catholic faith among their own struggling people. Thousands of Catholic clinics, orphanages, schools, convents and seminaries would appreciate your Lenten donation. PSR 6th Graders Are Collecting Items and Monetary Donations for the Troops – An essential part of being a disciple of Christ is to be of service to others. Each grade in PSR was asked to do a service project at some point in the year. TerriAnn Graves’ and Christy Peters’ 6th grade class has decided to make care packages for our troops and gift baskets for their spouses. TerriAnn has coordinated this effort and has arranged for the Miami Valley Chapter Blue Star Mothers to come to St. John the Baptist to work with our 6th graders and their families to put together these packages. The Blue Star Mothers are providing the boxes, packaging tape, and customs slips. We are responsible for collecting the items and paying the postage. Each box will cost $9.25 in postage. We are hoping to send 20 boxes. We are asking for items to send as well as monetary donations to pay the postage. Please see the list below for items needed. Any extra money will be used to create gift baskets for the spouses. Requested Items: Beef Jerky, Slim Jims, peanuts, tuna fish (seal packed), small packages of cheese crackers, hard candy, small packages of cookies, Life Savers, gum, suckers, Crystal Light drink mixes, Kool-Aid drink mixes in presweetened packages, powdered Gatorade in small packages, Tic Tacs, small cans of food with pop-tops on them, anything else that they can put into their pockets to carry with them when they go out on missions, small hand-held games, batteries (AA or AAA), brown t-shirts (any size), white tube socks, music CDs, any kind of movie DVDs, hand warmers, black socks. If making a monetary donation, please make checks out to: “St. John the Baptist.” In memo write: “6th grade service project.” Money basket and item collection boxes will be in gathering space/narthex at all Masses March 9/10.

PSR NEWS 2nd Graders Participate in Jesus Day – Our 2nd graders and their parents participated in Jesus Day, a mini-retreat in preparation for the celebration of First Eucharist, Saturday morning. They will be distributing bread that they baked at Jesus Day after the Masses. I offer much appreciation and gratitude to our 2nd grade catechists, Debbie Hews and Mark Sojda, as well as our high school assistant catechist, Samantha Bonifas, for their time and dedication. Please continue to keep our 2nd graders in your prayers.

Mark Your Calendar! Vacation Bible School is June 17-21.

Adult Faith Formation Corner“In this mortal life, mercy and forgiveness are the path which always leads us to grace.” Julian of Norwich. The Lord said to Samuel in our first reading from 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7,10-13a, “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” The hearts of the Pharisees caused them to be blind to the message of Jesus. As we continue on our Lenten journey may we look clearly into our hearts and seek God’s grace. Theology on Tap Beavercreek continues on Tuesday, March 12: Ask a Priest – We know you have questions about the Church and the Catholic faith. Here’s your chance to ask them! Presenters: Fr. Satish Joseph (Immaculate Conception, Dayton), Fr. John Krumm (St. Brigid, Xenia). Theology on Tap is a lecture and discussion series for people in their 20s and 30s, single or married. ToT Beavercreek meets on Tuesdays in March at LaRosa’s Pizzeria, 2453 Esquire Drive, Beavercreek (off N. Fairfield Road), for food and drink and lively discussion about things that matter to young adults and the Catholic faith. We gather at 7:00 p.m. and the speaker begins at 7:30 p.m. The program concludes at 8:45 p.m. There is no charge for attending. Food and drink is on your own, however. All young adults are welcome. For more information, contact the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry at 937-223-1001 or visit our website: www.CatholicCincinnati.org/ministries-offices/young-adult.

EASTER BASKETS FOR SHUT-INS will be provided again this year by our Parish. Donations are needed. There will be a box in the Narthex for this purpose. Monetary donations to purchase items needed may be made through the St. Vincent De Paul Fund. Please mark these “Easter

Baskets.” Stephen Ministry will be organizing the assembly of these baskets on Monday, March 25th, from 4:00-7:30 p.m. in the Banquet Hall. We would love some help! We also need volunteers willing to assist in delivering the baskets. Please call the Parish Office at 667-3419 during office hours for more information. Our friends really loved receiving these baskets last year. Please show your support for them again this year. Thank you!

be staying in our own backyard, literally as we spend our time sprucing up the grounds of St. John’s! Weeding, gardening, mulching are some of the things that need doing and we plan to show our parish how AWESOME our students are by pitching in! Each day of the week will begin and end with prayer, and the last day will be a celebration of our work! Watch your emails for more info and flyer! No need to preregister, just grab your friends, bring some gloves and be ready to work!
