GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE June 23, 2019 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ "They all ate and were satisfied." Why read the mira-cle of the multiplication of the loaves this Sunday? Here we see the mystery of our physical and spiritual realities intermingling. Too often, they can feel sepa-rate. When we go to Mass, how often we appear more ordinarily human rather than stretching toward the divine. Perhaps our experience of the Eucharist is fairly mundane. We notice when a new sacramental wine has been selected. We feel the varying textures of the host and wonder if they'll ever bring back the one that tasted distinctly like wheat. As we shuffle up to the front and stride back to our pew, we notice the looks on people's faces and the clothes on their backs. We get distracted by the crying child, the man blowing his nose, and the mechanical sound of the air conditioner kicking in. How human we are, how earth-bound, how material! And how good God is for entering into these self-same realities. How good God is for proclaiming "the kingdom of God," for "heal[ing] those who needed to be cured," for having mercy on a tired and hungry crowd. How many of the crowd noticed what had been done for them? Did they realize their din-ner was a miracle? How often do we miss the deeper reality of the Eucharist? Even if in the moment of receiving Communion we don't experience radical ecstasy and don't feel any different, there is a tangi-ble reality to cling to. Our God loves us enough to become bread for us, not only to feed us but to be fed upon by us.

Parish Fun & Games Night

Come join us for our Parish Fun & Games Night on Tuesday, June 25th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. A variety of games will be held inside the Social Hall and outside on the parish grounds (weather permit-ting). We’ll have bean bag/boards, badminton, ping pong, board games, card games, etc. Feel free to bring your favorite games to share and snacks. This will be a fun event for everyone in the parish; please invite your family and friends to join us as well.

Parish Fun & Game Nights will be every Tuesday, June 25th through August 13th.

Support for Fr. Łukasz Our friend, Fr. Łukasz will be returning to his home parish in Poland for several weeks in July/August. He is using this time to attend a family wedding, and spend time with family and friends as he rests and reenergizes before returning to Cuba. Fr. Karol will have an oppor-tunity to visit with Fr. Łukasz while he is home.

You may have heard that it is becoming difficult to travel to or send relief supplies to Cuba where Fr. Łukasz continues his missionary service for the next few years. To help support Fr. Łukasz with his mis-sionary work, we’ll be collecting monetary donations through July 14th. Those donations will be sent to Fr. Karol (via wire transfer) in time for Fr. Łukasz to purchase the items he needs for his parish and rectory. He is grateful for the support that our St. John parish community continues to show him and his parishioners in Cuba. You can see from the pictures Fr. Łukasz sends that he is making a positive impact there. If you’d like to help support, please put your cash or check donation in an envelope in the collection basket or bring it to the parish office by July 14th. Please make your check payable to ‘St. John Outreach’ with a nota-tion of ‘Fr. Łukasz’ in the memo section. As always, thank you for continuing to support and recognize the importance of Catholic missionary work and education outside of our St. John community. And keep Fr. Łukasz and his family and parishioners in your prayers as he travels home.

Pope advances sainthood causes for Father Tolton, Spanish martyrs

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis advanced the sainthood cause of Father Augustus Tolton, who was the first African American diocesan priest in the United States and founder of the first black Catholic parish in Chicago. Signing decrees issued by the Congregation for Saints' Causes June 11, Pope Francis also for-

mally recognized the martyrdom of three Catholic laywomen who were nurses for the Red Cross and were killed during the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War.

The decree for Father Tolton's cause makes him "venerable" and recognizes that he lived a life of hero-ic virtue.

“We welcome this news from the Holy Father on the advancement of Father Tolton’s cause for saint-hood,” said Cardinal Cupich. “Father Tolton’s holiness comes from his patient suffering, his brave spirit and his pastoral heart for all who came to him. His struggles to become a priest and his remarkable service to God’s People are admirable examples, particularly in these times of the value and dignity of every person. I am grateful to Bishop Joseph N. Perry for his work as the diocesan postulator for the Tolton cause.”

Once it is confirmed that one miracle has been granted by God through the intercession of Father Tolton, he will be declared “blessed.” A second miracle may be required for canonization.

Father Tolton was born into slavery in 1854 on a plantation near Brush Creek, Missouri. After his father left to try to join the Union Army during the Civil War, his mother fled with her three

children by rowing them across the Mississippi River and settling in Quincy in the free state of Illinois. There, he was encouraged to discern his vocation to the priesthood by the diocesan and Franciscan

priests in Quincy. However, he was denied access to seminaries in the United States after repeated requests, so he pursued his education in Rome at what is now the Pontifical Urbanian University.

He was ordained for the Propaganda Fidei Congregation in 1886, expecting to become a missionary in Africa. Instead, he was sent to be a missionary in his own country and returned to Quincy, where he served for three years before going to the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1889.

Despite rampant racism and discrimination, he became one of the city's most popular pastors, attract-ing members of both white and black Catholic communities. He spearheaded the building of St. Monica Church for black Catholics and worked tirelessly for his congregation in Chicago, even to the point of exhaus-tion. On July 9, 1897, he died of heatstroke on a Chicago street at the age of 43.

He was known for persevering against all odds in pursuit of his calling and quietly devoted himself to his people, despite great difficulties and setbacks.

Pope Francis also formally recognized the martyrdom of Maria Pilar Gullon Yturriaga, Octavia Iglesi-as Blanco and Olga Perez-Monteserin Nunez, members of Catholic Action who volunteered to serve wounded soldiers on the Asturian front in northern Spain.

The women refused to leave the wounded unattended even though the area was about to come under the control of populist fighters. All the patients, the doctor and chaplain were killed, and the three nurses were assaulted, raped and shot on Oct. 28, 1936. Gullon, Iglesias and Perez-Monteserin were 25, 41 and 23 years old, respectively.

The pope also signed decrees attesting to the heroic virtues lived by six servants of God -- three men and three women. Among them were:

-- Mother Rosario Arroyo, a distant relative of the former Filipino President Gloria Arroyo, lived from 1884 to 1957 and founded the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines.

-- Felice Tantardini, known as "God's blacksmith," was an Italian lay missionary for the Pontifical In-stitute for Foreign Missions. Born in 1898, he spent 70 years serving in Myanmar, where he died in 1991 at the age of 93. He worked as a catechist and helped build churches, schools, parish houses, hospitals, seminar-ies, orphanages, convents and bridges.

Fr. Karol’s Farewell Mass It is with sadness that we announce plans for Fr. Karol’s final, farewell Mass with us here at St. John Parish. Fr. Karol will celebrate the farewell Mass outdoors on the church grounds on Sunday, June 30th at 10am.

We plan to have a tent and folding chairs, however, feel free to bring your own lawn chairs as well. (In case of inclement weather, Mass will move to the church building.)

Following the Mass, we will have a casual get together outdoors with hot dogs, chips, pop and water. If you’d like to bring a dessert (cookies, brownies) to share, thank you.

Please come and say goodbye to Fr. Karol, and wish him well as he begins his sabbatical on July 1st. He has been a blessing to us here at St. John. Let us celebrate with him as he starts his sabbatical and moves on to his next assignment. Those whom he will serve will feel the blessings also. No 8:00 am Mass that day to allow more of us to celebrate with Fr. Karol as a community at this farewell Mass.

God bless you, Fr. Karol.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We owe today’s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became convinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that “nobody wanted.” He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ’s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ’s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an “anchoress,” a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ’s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ’s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her struggle and sorrows with dignity and meaning. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: How do you explain "Real Presence" to children.

Answer: The first Communion class is filled with excitement to the point of bursting! They are just awestruck by every new thing they learn about Jesus. Their enthusiasm is contagious as they rattle off the names of the things in church, the vessels and vestments used at Mass, and the names of their pastors and priests. Of course, they know Christ can do anything because he's God. He comes to us in holy Communion because he loves us so much that he wants to be with us. And he comes to us in the form of bread and wine. We really receive him in the Eucharist. Sometimes it is easier to explain this to children than to adults. Their faith and trust in Jesus is not limited by the questions and doubts that often come with the question of how he does it. Rather, they focus on the question "why," and the answer is something they can easily grasp: love. Christ wants to be with us because he loves us. Nothing is purer in truth or in faith. Not even the theological explanation of transubstantiation, or philosophical reasoning or symbolic references, come close. Christ takes on the form of bread and wine to be simple and approachable, so that no one is afraid or turned away. His love for us is complete and total. We try to love him the same way in return. For a child, it is simple. For us adults, we keep trying. "Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 18:3).
