Letter from the PresidentDear Members of our Watercolor Society,

Here we are, well into November, the month that reminds us to be thankful. Mixed in with dried up leaves that were so green and then colorful, is the fact that with each new day, we have the opportunity to make a difference. My hope is for you to persevere through trying times, to spread goodness where there is none, and to make time to let your inner passion bloom into new work.

Our September “paint out” meeting was a great success! The setting was lovely with the flowing St. Joe river to one side and the fabulously refurbished Studebaker Fountain before us. No tricks, but plenty of treats were provided. All participants wore masks!

The South Bend Museum of Art is open for classes, under strict guidelines. Two of our members have joined my Watercolor/Ink class this semester. Belonging to a group of art enthusiasts is a nice opportunity to get to know one another beyond our regular monthly meetings. When this Plan-demic goes away and we can feel safe to gather together, I encourage you to find a partner, or assemble a group that desires a reserved time to paint together. This might be an enriching time for everyone, perhaps research-ing and discussing favorite artists, sharing new techniques, or

discovering new venues to exhibit! “It’s not that we need new ideas, but we need to stop hav-ing old ideas.” Edwin Land

I encourage our membership to send images of work that can be included in our newsletters. Linda Fritschner is an Emerita Professor of Sociology and former Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Indiana University South Bend. Linda is a fascinating, multi faceted artist with a range of subject matter and works in the fluid mediums of watercolor & acrylic.

About Linda ...I am also a fine artist who has studied at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago where I was a Bachelor of Fine Arts student. Locally, I have benefitted from portrait classes with Alice Schlesinger, watercolor classes with Jim Borden, workshops with Nita Engle, a member of the American Watercolor Society, and oil and acrylic classes with David Lester Learn, David Allen, Diane Tesler, and others.

I am a lifetime member of the Northern Indiana Artists (NIA), a member of the St. Joe Valley Watercolor Society where I served as Treasurer from 1990 to 1994, a member of the Elkhart Art League, and a member of the local and national chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Arts (WCA). My work has been shown and received awards in exhibits sponsored by these groups and in solo exhibits. I have also exhibited work and received recognition in the juried regional shows at the Midwest Museum of American Art, Arts on Main, the Roti Roti Gallery in Buchanan, the Colfax Cultural Center, and the Kroc Center, to name a few.

Currently, my paintings are of landscapes inspired by trips to Antarctica, the extreme Arctic including Iceland, Greenland, and Svalbard, and by the familiar environment of South Bend and Elkhart, Indiana. Some of my fairly large paintings depict the rugged rocks, ice sheets, mountains, and icebergs of the Arctic and peninsular area of Antarctica. These environments offer a glimpse at extremes, extremes of scale, light, and color, especially blue. The Arctic paintings offer a look at Inuit villages in Greenland including UUmmannaq and Ittogortoormitt as well as the towns of Longyearbyen on the island of Spitzbergen. The local landscapes show the beauty and grit of the neighborhoods, towns, and farms of northern Indiana.
