Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Most of us are sure that we would have been followers of Jesus had we lived in his day and age. But can we be so certain? The best people of his day failed to recognize him because he kept company with the people who were anything but well to do and respectable.

In our first reading from the prophet Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17, we see that the good shepherd goes after the sheep that is lost in the dark or caught in the storm. Those who rescue the straying are more Christ like than those who stick with the virtuous.

In our Gospel from Matthew 25: 31-46, Jesus taught that the Final Judgment will bring a few surprises. The greatest surprise will be the discovery that God puts deed of kindness ahead of acts of piety. Our deepest worship of God is found in our service to the needy of the earth.

Taking Christ at his word is a terrifying thing. What if we have been too busy or too blind to see Christ coming to us in the needy of the earth? While we have looked for him in the sanctuary, he has encountered us in the streets. While we are calling to him in prayer, he is speaking to us through our neighbors in need. Blessings, Fr. Ray

PEOPLE OF LIFE

We are created in the image of God, in the image of Jesus as a human being. Every child has been created for a greater thing, to love and be loved. From the very beginning, from the time there is life, from the time there is conception, there is the life of God, the life of the living God. That is why it is so wrong to destroy life, to destroy the image of God. Mother Teresa, words to love by…

“Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.” - Matthew 25:46 In today’s readings we see that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who will care for us in our time of need. However, our relationship with Jesus should not be all take and no give. We, in turn, are expected to care for one another just as Jesus cares for us. Also in these readings, we hear of the second coming and the final judgment that will take place when the Lord returns in glory. It is our responsibility, as the Lord’s disciples, to use the gifts he has given us wisely. Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, Chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, addressed the Christian vocation to cultivate and care for God’s good gift of Creation in a speech to an ecumenical gathering in Louisville, Kentucky. He identified how this commitment connects to Catholic concerns for human life and human dignity – particularly of the poor and vulnerable.”Bishop Blaire said that God’s generous gift of creation demands a response back to God and a duty to steward what God has given to us for the good of all the hu-man family. The bishop highlighted how environmental degradation compromises human life and dig-nity, especially of the poor and vulnerable. A prime example, he continued, are the adverse impacts which mercury, toxic air pollution and climate change have on human life, particularly on the unborn, in the case of mercury pollution and future generations in the case of climate change.” Copyright (c) 2011 Catholic News Service/USCCB. Treasure Today, we take up a Collection that helps fight poverty at its roots. For over 40 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has provided funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. The Collection has helped secure funding for low-income day care centers, programs that emphasize education, and affordable hous-ing in low-income neighborhoods. It has contributed to efforts to implement laws that enforce fair wages. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection.

Giving Tree

The ornaments are complete and will be on the trees next week. Please take a closer look at the agencies that greatly benefit from your generosity. Without your support, they could not serve those in need during the holidays. Currently, we provide gifts to 10 agencies. This week, we complete the list of agencies.

St. Mary’s of Oakland, serves the needs of local, low-income families and seniors. The staff coordinates care with medical professionals, provides telephone and emotional support, home visits and other services. Additionally, St. Mary's is the only agency in Oakland with programs exclusively designed for homeless seniors. For more information, go to www.stmaryscenter.org.

Shepherd’s Gate, was established in 1984. Shepherd’s Gate has helped over 8,700 battered and homeless women and children. They provide a safe haven for women and their children who are homeless because of abusive relationships, addictions, loss of financial support or other factors. All services are provided to anyone regardless of race, age, religion, color, creed , national origin, disability, marital status, or veteran status. They are able to provide for up to 128 women and children at a time. Currently, campuses are located in Livermore and Brentwood. For more information, go to www.shepherdsgate.org

Casa Francisca, was founded in Oakland on Christmas Eve, 1986. This house of hope (previously called Casa Esperanza) provides transitional housing for people who are fleeing persecution, war and the threat of death in their native land. While stay-ing at Casa Francisca, refugees seek and establish official refugee status through the process established by the INS. This en-ables them to work legally and to become self-sufficient.

Next week’s bulletin will include a list of the items requested by the agencies, as well as the corresponding ornament shape. The Giving Trees will be available starting, Saturday, November 26th . All gifts must be returned to church by the noon Mass on Sunday, December 11th.

On behalf of the agencies, thank you for your continued support, The Giving Tree Committee
