Dear Sisters and Brothers, The word “salvation” makes many of us uneasy. It brings up thoughts of fire and brimstone evangelists, threatening people with eternal damnation if their souls aren’t saved. But salvation has more to do with wholeness in this life than with happiness in the life to come. In our first reading from the Book of Wisdom, we hear that God saves us from many things,

including our thoughts of insignificance. We are but a single grain of wheat, yet God saves us from unimportance by letting us share in his Spirit and life. The story of Zacchaeus in our gospel, paints a picture of the true meaning of salvation. When Christ came into Zacchaeus’ life it changed the way he lived. Becoming a child of God is a matter of living a godly life. We cannot separate love for God and love for neighbor. The healing love of God reaches out to all those who are in need. Salvation means liberation from every condition that limits human growth and destroys human happiness. Human life is burdened by tragic flaws and failures. But faith promises liberation, healing and transformation. This does not come instantaneously or automatically. There is always some path of devotion and discipline which we must follow to receive God’s gift of wholeness.

Question for Children: “Is there a child in your class or neighborhood who is left out of games and activities? What can you do?”

TOWARDS A MATURE FAITH

A key element and indeed the central core of Cardinal Newman’s belief and theological outlook was his commitment to the person of Jesus. In the cardinal’s eyes, Jesus is the center around which all faith and human desire are brought to fruition. Jesus is the one who provides a solid basis for belief and keeps our life as Christians vibrant and alive. For Newman, the Incarnation is more than a cure for our sinfulness; it is also the completion of God’s creative and sanctifying activity. The Incarnation is not an impersonal concept in his way of thinking; rather it is a “concrete particularity of its historical embodiment in Jesus Christ.” (Imbelli p. 16) Christ’s real presence is imparted to believers through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. In Newman’s sermons, he always strived to convey to believers that Christ, the living Word of God, provides them with a life-giving relationship that speaks to them in their heart of hearts. His motto as a cardinal was, “Cor ad cor loquitur” (Heart speaks to heart). Christ’s heart speaks to our heart. As a result, Newman saw clearly that our faith is to live in and operate through our relationship to Christ.

Peace, Deacon Charlie

Teens and parents: do you ever find yourself in conflict? Does the arguing affect your relationship? This seminar is designed for building bridges and strengthening the parent-teen

relationship. Communication techniques are taught that facilitate understanding and invite dialogue between parent and teen. The session involves integrating ten vital needs both

parents and teens want in order to build a lasting, loving and trusting relationship.

TEENS: You’re coming to LIGHT on Monday night anyway . . . On November 15, bring your parent(s)! You will be glad you did!

Session requires both parent and teen attendance

LIGHT needs rugs!

If you have a large rug (not a carpet remnant) that you would like to donate, we could use it! And we need a lot!

Please drop off any rugs in the youth center.

Thanks!

“Jst Hw Pinoy R U?” Saturday, November 13th 1:30 PM, MPR “You know you’re Filipino if you can’t make an important decision without praying a novena.” If you’re Filipino, you’re reading this and chuckling as you recognize yourself. If you’re not Filipino, we’re hoping you’d be interested enough to want to know more about us – your neighbors, friends and/or co-parishioners. Our history is linked with that of our adopted country even before the United States of America purchased the Philippines from Spain for $20,000,000.00 under the Treaty of Paris on Dec. 10, 1898. Best-selling, Manila-based Filipina author, Neni Sta. Romana-Cruz, will engage us with an hour-long talk entitled “Jst Hw Pinoy R U? Using Pop Culture to Uncover What Makes Filipinos Tick” on Saturday, November 13th at 1:30 PM in the Church MPR. Please join us. Perhaps as you learn more about us, we’ll discover how much we are alike and how we can connect and enhance each other instead of separate and devalue our fellowship.

A book sale and signing will follow the presentation. Additionally, available for purchase are bazaar items from a non-profit organization, Gifts and Graces (www.giftsandgraces.com) that advocates fair trade and champions livelihood products made by marginalized groups of society – street children, the urban poor, former prison inmates, and indigenous groups. Proceeds will go to St. Joan of Arc Parish. Christmas Caroling – December 3, 4, 10 and 11: May we bring songs of joy and praise to your homes and businesses? Revisiting Vatican II Tuesday, November 16th 7:00 PM

in the Church Rev. Andrew Kirschman

The Second Vatican Council of 1962-1965 makes clear that we the baptized are called to the common priesthood of all the faithful (Dogmatic Constitution of the Church, Chapter 2).We are challenged to become mature Chris-tians with an adult conviction of the importance of spiritu-ality for a happy and balanced life. All of us - not just the ordained - are called to lives of self-sacrifice and service. All of us must seek intellectual understanding of our faith as well as heart-felt commitment. We share co-responsibility with the ordained to bring the Kingdom of God into the world (Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, Chap. 3).

Come join us as we review what happened (History lead-ing up, energy around the Council, the Documents, public discourse / perception); examine what has happened since (the past 40 years), consider the things that “worked” and those things that did not “work”; take a look at the state of the issues from the Council for the Church of today (lingering hopes, growing fears) and consider our hopes for the future Church (What does the Council mean for us as we look ahead? Is there a Vatican III in our future???

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appear-ing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persis-tent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. 2 Timothy 4, 1-2

Mass of Remembrance

on

All Souls Day—Dia de los Muertos

Tuesday—November 2, 2010 7:00 p.m.

Please join us in remembering our beloved dead. Invite your family and friends.

Bring a picture or memento to place on our Altarcito

ALTARCITO

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) The Day of the Dead began as an Aztec celebration originally celebrated in August, where it was believed that the spirits of the dead would return once a year to be reunited with their loved ones on earth. Skeletons and skulls were used as symbols for death and re-birth, reminding us mortals that death is a part of life. Instead of fearing death, the Aztecs embraced it and considered it a “moving-on” to a higher level of consciousness. When the Spaniards came and converted the Aztecs, the Aztecs incorporated the symbol of the crucifix into the celebration, which the Spaniards moved to November 2nd, All Souls Day.

Altarcito (Small Altar) A Dia de los Muertos altar (altarcito) is meant to honor the memory of someone who touched your life. This can be anyone from the family pet, a loved one, or one of the Saints. Anyone who had a positive impact on your life can be a subject of your Day of the Dead altar. Pictures of the deceased are placed on the Dia de los Muertos altar along with their favorite drink and food which is to nourish the spirits after their long journey from beyond the grave. Candles to light their way home and water to freshen-up after their long trip back are also placed on the altar. Trinkets that they were fond of, symbols they would understand, and gifts are left to communicate to them that they are always in the hearts of those left behind, and that they are still part of the family even though they aren’t physically with us any longer.

Families often spend time at the cemetery with loved ones, bringing food and drink along with all the other necessities for a picnic. However, at this picnic the deceased is the guest of honor. Dia de los Muertos is a time of joy because we know that we are sur-rounded by those we love—both living and dead.

Father Ray would like to invite all parishioners to begin bringing in their photos of loved ones to the parish office. They will be placed on the Altarcito next weekend and remain until the end of November. PLEASE put your name and phone number on the back of your picture for easy reference.
