Page Two ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH

This Gospel reading had been intensely put to life in the movie The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson. The whole movie in fact shows the intense passion of Jesus, it started while Jesus was praying in the garden of Gethsemane. “After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done." And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. The movie ended with his crucifixion and eventual resurrection. This Sunday we are at the end of the church’s calendar and we are celebrating the feast of Christ the King. The Gospel truly depicts the heavenly kingship of Jesus a kingship that is at odds with our own worldly idea. Jesus’ kingship is a kingship of Obedience, of Humility, of Servant hood and of Suffering and Sacrifice for the salvation of all humanity. He did not mind the anguish and humiliation; He was so focused with his mission. On the latter part of the Gospel, were the two thieves: one was unrepentant and the other one was full of remorse and humility that he asked Jesus to remember him when He comes to his kingdom. And Jesus did not fail him; He brought along the repentant thief to His paradise. Discussing from experience, it’s not really easy to follow the kingship of Jesus it’s full of sacrifice and trials but it’s during this sacrifices and trials that we will feel His abiding presence in our life and beyond. These past weeks and months I have witnessed parishioners and friends and family deal with illness and pain and at times suffering and have watched as the Lord has been ever present in them and the people around them. I have asked for mercy and healing and seen love and compassion. The Lord is good and he loves his children. Jesus is continuously inviting us to follow His kingship. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.Bob

A Letter From Father Ian

My brothers and sisters:

Over the last eight months, I have been spending a great deal of time and energy focused on my family and issues that affect me directly. As a result, I have been experiencing depression and anxiety.

Last week, I had a very grace-filled conversation with Bishop Barber. I expressed my desire to take care of this matter and seek some professional assistance. He was more than supportive and a true “Priest” to this priest. After consulting with him and some close friends, I am going to take a leave in order to restore balance to my health in body, mind and spirit.

I love priestly life and ministry and want to be solid in my health so to serve. Please keep me in your prayers. Thank you for your understanding. Let us pray for one another.

Blessings,

Fr. Ian

UPDATE on Carmen, our Gabriel mom from last

year: Her husband abandoned her, their toddler

and his 2 children while she was pregnant.

Recently Carmen was scheduled for a hernia

repair. A surgical mishap occurred, the hernia

repair was delayed, and Carmen ended up with a

2 week hospitalization. When she finally was able

to be rescheduled for surgery, large cancerous

intestinal tumors were found. The tumors were

removed and she had six weeks of chemo. A

complete hysterectomy will follow. Please pray

for Carmen and her four children.

At the end of October every bishop in the United States was forwarded a document and questionnaire from the Vatican on issues related to marriage and family life. The questionnaire seeks input from clergy, religious, and laity to help define the state of marriage and family life. The survey also asks for statistical data, and for a comparison of the Church’s teaching with the practice in the local culture. Bishop Michael Barber is asking parishioners to please consider responding to the Pre-Synod Questionnaire which will be available for input on our diocesan website . A more detailed explanation of the process and an online survey may be found here: 1. www.oakdiocese.org 2. Clink on the link for the Vatican Questionnaire (located on their main page)

There will be hard copies in the vestibule this weekend All responses must be completed no later than December 13, 2013

Each month we work with the organization, Cityteam in San Francisco,

to deliver sack lunches, “Bags of Love”, to people living in

single room occupancy hotels (SROs). We collect new socks to hand out with

the lunches to help keep everyone’s feet warm and dry.

Donations can be dropped off at a Youth Mass or any time in the Youth Center.
