TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: “Too much information!” We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it’s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been “too much information” for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem “too much” for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Eph 2:1-10; Ps 100:1b-5; Lk 12:13-21 Tuesday: Eph 2:12-22; Ps 85:9ab-14; Lk 12:35-38 Wednesday: Eph 3:2-12; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lk 12:39-48 Thursday: Eph 3:14-21; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19; Lk 12:49-53 Friday: Eph 4:1-6; Ps 24:1-4ab, 5-6; Lk 12:54-59 Saturday: Eph 4:7-16; Ps 122:1-5; Lk 13:1-9 Sunday: Jer 31:7-9; Ps 126:1-6; Heb 5:1-6; Mk 10:46-52

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Mission Sunday Monday: St. John Paul II Tuesday: St. John of Capistrano Wednesday: St. Anthony Mary Claret Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by 1830. It was a priest-less church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.” Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. -Rev. James Field ERROR-FREE A mistake doesn’t become an error until I refuse to correct it. —Anonymous THE GREATEST TEST The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart. —Robert Ingersoll

Faith Formation– Donations Needed Faith Formation costs money to purchase books and supplies that our catechists need for the year. There are many families who cannot afford to send their children to Faith Formation. Please do not allow lack of funds to stand in the way of your children and grandchildren from coming to Faith Formation, EDGE or Confirmation. If you, as a parishioner, would like to donate money to help pay for families who cannot pay, please write your check to St. Joan of Arc and write on the envelope that it is to be used to pay fees for families bringing their children to Faith Formation. Thank you for your generosity.

TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. We celebrate this day by remembering the revitalizing mission at the heart of our Christian faith—to bring the Gospel to all! The collection today for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, ensures the work and service of the Mission Church, as it supports priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank you to our Council of Catholic Women for their very generous $2,000 donation to go towards our APA. They presented the check to Fr. Pat at their last meeting.

Announcing the Good News: Let Mary Lead You to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. 33 Days to Morning Glory.

Are you looking for a way to increase and deepen your relationship with Jesus through our Blessed Mother while finding FELLOWSHIP within the parish? We are inviting you to ‘retreat’ with us with the process called: 33 Days to Morning Glory. The process begins after the 9:00 a.m. Mass Tuesday, October 30th through November 26th. Consecration to Jesus through Mary will be on Sunday, December 2nd, at the 9:00 a.m. Mass.

This particular group will be led by Kathy Huey and will be held in the Library after the 9:00 AM Mass. You do not need to attend all group sessions to be a part of this process. This journey will lead you to a greater understanding of Mary’s role in our salvation, and how our Blessed Mother is waiting for us to open our hearts to her so that she may lead us to her Son, Jesus. This is a simple, yet profound “do-it yourself” retreat that only requires a few minutes of daily reading with pondering throughout the day, and weekly small group meetings. It is Bishop Gregory’s hope that all parishioners will eventually attend 33 Days to Morning Glory.

Please email the Faith Formation office is you are interested in this journey. [email protected]
