How to Celebrate the Easter Season

What the Easter Season Is All About In the days and weeks after the Resurrection of Jesus, the Gospels tell us that Jesus’ disciples encounter Our Lord again and again. They encounter Jesus in Jerusalem, in Galilee, in a locked room and on a lakeshore. Jesus teaches them about:

Peace and forgiveness. The power to forgive in His name. The invitation to deeper faith. A call to feed His Sheep. A mission to baptize the whole world. The assurance of His presence with them

always.

During the Easter season, we walk with the Apostles on the same journey with the Risen Christ. Like the Apostles we are assured by Jesus that He will be with us always. At the same time, He is with us now. We also have the same mission that the early Christians. That mission is to spread the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection, which leads to our salvation to eternal life. The light and life Christ brings into the world are reflected in the symbols of:

The New Paschal Candle, which is lit beginning on the Easter Vigil and during all the liturgies of the Easter season. It is also lit during all baptisms and at all funerals.

The liturgical color during the Easter season is white. This symbolizes the purity of our life in Christ as well as His glory.

Easter lilies, which represents the beauty and glory of Christ.

Please keep Jim Riviero in your prayers as he continues his preparation

in the Diaconate Program.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Easter (or Sunday of Divine Mercy); Julian Calendar Easter Monday: The Annunciation of the Lord Wednesday: St. Stanislaus Thursday: Yom Ha-Shoa (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Friday: St. Martin I TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast.

—Rev. James Field

NO THEORY Let your religion so be less of a theory and more of a love affair.

—G. K. Chesterton EVERYTHING God, of your goodness give me yourself, for you are enough for me. And only in you do I have everything.

—St. Julian of Norwich

SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday’s Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1)—what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The community of believers was of one heart and mind (Acts 4:32-35). Psalm — Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118). Second Reading — Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God (1 John 5:1-6). Gospel — The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and the Spirit. (John 20:19-31). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 7:10-14; 8:10; Ps 40:7-11; Heb 10:4-10; Lk 1:26-38 Tuesday: Acts 4:32-37; Ps 93:1-2, 5; Jn 3:7b-15 Wednesday: Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34:2-9; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday: Acts 5:27-33; Ps 34:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36 Friday: Acts 5:34-42; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Jn 6:1-15 Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21 Sunday: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; Ps 4:2, 4, 7-9; 1 Jn 2:1-5a; Lk 24:35-48

MASS INTENTION REQUESTS Offering Mass for a special intention has been a long standing tradition in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are received by the person who the intention is for. Masses are said for many reasons; for a deceased person, for a living person, in honor of someone’s birthday, in honor of someone's anniversary, etc. The name of the person or persons we are praying for is mentioned in the general intercessions, by the priest at Mass and in our weekly bulletin. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, living or deceased, please go to the Parish Office. A Mass Card will be given to you as a reminder of the time and date you requested.

STEWARDSHIP Today we celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday. In our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke (the author) tells us that the early Christian community of believers was of one heart and one mind. No one in the community claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but that they had everything in common. Whatever was needed by anyone was distributed by the community. What a magnificent example of pure stewardship, not just giving a portion of their wealth, but all of it !! In today’s Gospel, Thomas, called Didymus, did not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead. Once he placed his fingers in the wounds in Jesus’ hands and his hand in the side of Jesus, he believed. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” During our time in prayer, let us not deny the presence of Jesus but be open to His call to serve others. When Jesus appeared to His disciples following His resurrection from the dead, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Our lives are full of the Holy Spirit when we honor our call to be of service to others. There is no greater satisfaction than to serve the Church as did the early disciples. There is so much we can do to fulfill our own lives while filling the lives of others. Along with our service to others is our call to share our financial resources. One of the most wonderful ways that we can share our financial treasure is to include St. Joan of Arc Parish in our last wills and testaments. A simple call to the Parish Office will result in a confidential call from our Finance Minister to discuss the procedures. “It is in giving that we receive.” St. Francis. Please pray for Deacon Lee in his illness.
