The overriding issue of our church these days is the outcome of the abuses and scandals caused by many, but especially by the church hierarchies. Fr Hans Zollner SJ, the President of the Centre for Child Protection at the Gregorian University in Rome, was recently here in Australia. Speaking to ministry leaders in the church, he said that for the entire history of the Church, Catholics had responded with creativity and pas- sion to the issues of the day – dedicating their lives to new ministries, and building communi- ties of like-minded people to support that work. The Church needed that creativity when the abuse crisis emerged more than two decades ago and, after being held back for so long by a lack of resources and will, that creativity needs to be unleashed today more than ever. After years of enduring the reports from the Royal Commission, Catholics in schools and parishes are ready and willing to take up the response. Indeed, it’s at this level the majority of the work will need to be done – both in safeguarding children and the vulnerable, and providing outreach to survivors and their families. Australia’s Catholic bishops have accepted the need for change, and seem willing to dedicate resources to ensure that it happens. Let’s hope those items that have been referred to Rome will be considered seriously by the Pope and bishops there. The WORD of GOD IN A NUTSHELL: Today’s readings have some of the messianic joy that Jesus brings to all people, especially the poor. The 1st Reading, from the prophet Isaiah, is full of hope and joy. He looks forward to deliverance from exile; people will be healed, creation revived with gushing water. In response, Psalm 145 (146) is a prayer of praise to the God who feeds the hungry, heals the sick, and cares for the poor and downtrodden. St James, in the 2nd Reading, clearly states that God chooses the poor, and that we too must not favour the rich and powerful at their expense. We are all equal in God’s sight and must act accordingly. We are all heirs to his kingdom. The Gospel recounts the healing of the deaf man with an im- pediment in his speech. His healing is not just physical; the whole person is opened to the Lord.
