Update on the Call Process

At its meeting on March 19, the Congregation Council voted to hire Deborah McClellan

to work as a member of our staff in the upcoming months. Deborah is a rostered

Deaconess in the Lutheran Church. Her duties will include pastoral visitation of the sick,

possible Bible study and opportunities for preaching. Her time is not to exceed 20

hours/week, with flexibility in her weekly schedule. Deborah also works part-time at Utz

Terrace Lutheran Village in Hanover as well as St Bartholomew Lutheran Church in

Hanover. Deborah brings gifts especially related to work as a Hospice chaplain and

bereavement counselor. We welcome Deaconess Deborah McClellan!

Following the forums on the weekend of March 22-23, the completion of

questionnaires by St. James members, as well as conversations at various Sunday

School classes, the Council is now working to compile this feedback as well as

finalize a Call Committee. The Call Committee will then complete the

Congregation Profile, the document used by the Synod to determine names of

persons presented to the congregation. Keep holding this process in your prayers!

Update on the Worship Renewal Work in the worship area and throughout the main floor continues. Painters, carpenters,

electricians, carpet installers and plumbers are moving quickly to complete the project.

Church furnishings should arrive on March 31, when a call for volunteers will be issued.

We anticipate using the worship area on April 5 and 6. Although a few areas will need to

be finished, we do anticipate a smooth transition back to our worship area. We thank our

worshippers for their patience while we worship in the basement dining room. The saying,

“Temporary inconvenience, permanent improvement” seems most fitting during this

Let’s read a book during Lent!

Looking for Lenten Discipline? Here’s a suggestion: read a book! And on Passion/Palm Sunday, April 13, let’s get together at 5:00 pm in the Gathering Area and share our thoughts and ideas about the book, around a simple meal of soup and bread. Let’s read the book, Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint, by Nadia Bolz-Weber. WARNING: this book is both sarcastically irreverent and beautifully honest! It is meant to be disturbing to one’s comfortable faith, yet never meant to damage one’s faith journey. I found it to be a stimulating and exciting book for one’s spiritual expedition! There is some language that can seem crude. Nadia is an ELCA pastor, but not the pastor most of us are used to seeing every Sunday morning. Some from our congregation heard her at the ELCA Youth Event in New Orleans. Others heard her at the Congregations Together In Mission Event (CTIM) in Hanover on March 15. As taken from her website: [This book is for] “...every thinking misfit who is as suspicious of institutional religion as they are of themselves, yet are still seeking some transcendence and mystery in their lives.” (There is a sign-up sheet in the gathering area if you plan to join us for soup and bread.)

THE ST. JAMES TROUBADOURS are back on Sunday, April 27 at 4:00 pm for

a BROADWAY EXTRAVAGANZA! Join vocalists Wayne Hill, Dwight Michael,

and pianists Tim Braband and Mike Matsinko for a program of music from

some of your favorite Broadway shows. A free-will offering will be

received for the worship area renewal project. This will be a wonderful

celebration in our newly renovated space. Join us and bring a friend!

Loving Jesus

All are welcome to join Thursday Morning Bible Study! We are currently reading Mark Allan

Powell’s book Loving Jesus. Gather for fellowship, coffee and refreshments at 9:45 am and stay

for discussion led by Lucinda Bringman, 10-11 am. The book is guiding us in meaningful

conversation about our faith and commitment to Jesus. What does it truly mean to love Jesus?

Here is one excerpt the group recently found helpful:

My faith is not always strong, my life is not always good, and I do not always think that I am

blessed. I don’t want to really love Jesus a lot some days and only a little on other days,

depending on what I think or how I feel at the time. I don’t know what will happen between today

and tomorrow. My faith could be shaken. All the things I’m grateful for could disappear. But I do

know that tomorrow morning I’m still going to be part of the church, and the church is still going

to love Jesus. So I know that I will love him too.

MARCH COUNCIL REPORT Claire Anderson, Corresponding Secretary

Congregation Council held its monthly meeting on March 19, 2014.

UPDATES:

Council Input Survey:

Council is looking forward to receiving survey responses from members of the congregation; we have

received less than 10 thus far. We discussed the upcoming Adult Forums. Vice President Tom Young

will preside; most members will attend at least one session. Tom will present the various Call options and

open the discussion of leadership choices. We hope to receive enough input from the congregation to

provide direction for the Call Committee. Council will hold a Special Council Meeting on

Wednesday, March 26th

to choose Call Committee members and to review the surveys.

2014 Budget:

Office & Finance Manager Mella DeNoma reported that the meeting with Sturgill and Trostle

representatives was productive. Accounts were restructured from multiple accounts into one Giving

account. A Columbarium account was added to keep track of paid and partial payments for niches. Mella

is happy with the changes; they are easier to use and to read. Council approved the financial reports for

January and February. Mella reported a (-$3000) net loss for January and February; she believes that

weather and poor attendance are reasonable explanations for the deficit. Tom Young explained that the

deficit is larger than it looks because we have not paid the monthly salary for the associate pastor. The

deficit is closer to (-$20,000). Council hopes that the congregation will contribute generously between

March and June before the anticipated summer slump.

Worship Area Renewal Update:

Pastor Allwein reported that the renovations are proceeding as planned. Tim Braband and Tom Bender

are looking for volunteers to help on March 31st when the worship furniture is delivered.

Motions from the Personnel Committee: Council unanimously approved the following:

“A motion is hereby made to Council recommending the adoption and strict adherence

to procedures…for any policy changes or new policies enacted for the congregation,

effective January 2014.”

Pastor Allwein asked Council to offer a Letter of Employment to Sister Deborah

McClellan for a part-time position at St. James. This position is temporary and will be

terminated in the event that we hire an interim or associate pastor. Deborah McClellan

is an ELCA lay roster Deaconess. She will serve St. James as a pastoral care/visitation

pastor, a weekly Bible study leader, and other tasks as needed--not to exceed 20 hours a

week. She will earn $20/hour with a mileage reimbursement of 56 cents/mi.

Committee Reports:

The Social Ministry Committee hosted a successful dinner for 36 seminary students this month. The

Stewardship Committee reported that they will have an Endowment Brochure ready in the near future.

Evangelism Committee is happy with the distribution of the new Church Directories.

New Business:

Pastor Allwein asked for volunteers to serve the final Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S. Sunday breakfast at the Soup

Kitchen on Sunday, March 30th

at 6:30 am. Shawn Abma and Jeff Snyder volunteered to cook. Three

more volunteers are needed. - 5 –

The World Outreach Committee would like to share with the congregation some excerpts from an

article from the January issue of The Lutheran magazine.

We Can Be Part of Ministry Anywhere by James Swanson

I love money. I know that the love of money is the base for all evil according to the Bible, but I love money

anyway. The evil of money, however, is not rooted in money itself, but in our attitude about it.

I am not in a position to be a major sponsor of anything, no matter how dear it might be to me. But I can still be

a part of ministry anywhere I choose, whether locally or nationally or anywhere in the world. My love of money

allows that. My money might become sacks of rice somewhere in the world, or part of the expense of drilling a well

in Africa, or earthquake recovery in Haiti. I can take satisfaction in that.

I can be a part of our church’s relief work following a major disaster, like hurricanes Katrina or Sandy or the

tornadoes in Oklahoma. I will be there when the trauma of these events sets in. I would not be much more than in

the way if I went to a disaster site, but I can help to empower someone who is more skilled and more capable than I

to make it all happen.

Far too many members of our congregations are ignorant about these wonderful programs and that all of the

money I give will go to the work I intend to help—every penny of it.

Ah, money. It lets me be a part of so many wonderful things that are happening in our world. And to think I

could so easily turn it into something evil. I like my way of loving it so much better.

Just like Jim Swanson, the folks at St. James like money and what it can accomplish. Our Faith

Commitment to the Synod and to special benevolence projects serve those in need here and throughout the world.

Thanks be to God!

Every year, millions of people around the globe observe World Malaria Day on April 25. The ELCA Malaria Campaign is turning this day into a special week. This is an opportunity for all of us to come together and do something big. With nearly 10,000 congregations and over 3.9 million baptized members, we are a church that rolls up its sleeves and gets to work. The goal is to raise $250,000 in one week, which is enough to kick-start malaria programming in Namibia. We can do more together than we ever could alone. Already, we have joined hands with our brothers and sisters in 12 African countries, and have seen great progress. Together, let’s help make it 13. Donations can be mailed directly to Lower Susquehanna Synod – ELCA, 900 South Arlington Avenue, Suite 220B, Harrisburg, PA 17109 or you can donate online at https://community.elca.org/malariadonate.

World Outreach Committee - Mission Scholarship Application

The mission of the World Outreach Committee at St. James is to engage every member in the global

mission of Christ's Church in the world through prayer, education, service and sharing of gifts. We would

like to encourage members to actively participate in mission projects. To accomplish this goal, the

congregation added a scholarship fund of $800.00 to the 2014 budget.

We invite you to tell us about you mission plans to see if we can help with some partial support from

this scholarship fund. Submit a statement to the St. James Church Office marked “Application World

Outreach Mission Scholarship.”

Please cover the following points with enough detail to help us to learn what you hope to accomplish

during your mission project.

1) Provide name, address, telephone and e-mail.

2) Describe where and when you want to go and what you want to do.

3) Tell us about the level of support you will need.

4) Explain how your mission project will support the mission goals of the

World Outreach Committee and the St. James Lutheran Church community.

5) Be sure to sign and date your statement.

The application deadline is May 11, 2014 with notification by June 1. The scholarship must be used

during 2014. If you have questions about this program contact Ron Couchman at [email protected] or

334-1847 or any member of the World Outreach Committee.

FINANCIAL UPDATES….STREAMLINING! As progress continues on updates and construction in the Nave and various parts of the church, the Finance Committee has been making updates to the financial reporting and streamlining some procedures.

A review of some of these updates are:

1) Finance Chair Tom Young and Office & Finance Manager Mella DeNoma met with an outside accounting firm to discuss the present financial reporting for the church. Many great ideas and suggestions were made and are being put into place. The main change was combining unnecessary funds that needed to be balanced monthly.

2) There is now one main fund or contribution category called “GIVING”. It is no longer necessary to designate where your St. James contribution goes. According to the 2014 budget, every contribution gets reported to Giving, with the exception of a few funds such as Building, Worship Renewal and all the Christmas and Easter envelopes. This has streamlined the accounting process and financial reporting tremendously.

3) We ask that donations to charitable organizations and ministries, beyond St. James, that church members wish to support financially be done directly to those organizations. Cash given to St. James, or checks made payable to St. James, with specific direction to send the gift to an outside organization, creates additional, time consuming month end bookkeeping. This practice also complicates the financial reporting.

4) A list of names and addresses of all charities and outside ministries that church members have supported will be in the gathering area. If there is a ministry not listed, please see Mella and she will get the information for you.

5) The Finance Committee is also creating new Accounting Manuals & Procedures. ELCA guidelines are being referenced to help with this process to make sure everything is correct.

6) A laptop has been purchased using memorial gifts. This laptop will have the church’s software program installed and the process will only have to be done once.

As you can see, many new updates are being made. Change can be challenging, but we hope for the better. We look forward to your support as all these exciting updates continue to happen at St James.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who supported the fastnacht fundraiser! So many people donated their time and energy! Many people supported the youth by purchasing fastnachts! We raised enough money to send 15 youth to workcamp this summer! We would like to extend a special thank you to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans who is contributing $1,600! It is a blessing to have so much support for our children and youth ministry at St. James!
