I s it about being connected to thatsomeone special. About yourfamily, friends, significant otherand our God. But, we are taught, ourGod should be first in that list, pri-mary . So lets right the order. Welove our God, our family, friends, significant other, our pets, jobs, art,and wardrobes. You name it, there is

so M-U-C-H to love. God tells ushow to love and spoke these words; You shall have no other God beforeme. In Exodus 20:6 , God tells usnot to worship any other gods, I, theLord your God, am a jealous God.

We must know God is our ultimatesource of love. He gives it to us andthen He commands us to pass it onand to love deeply and intensely.Within the Ten Commandment in

Exodus 20: 3, Thou shall love theLord thy God with all thy heart, withall your soul, and with all your mind.4: Thou shall love thy neighbor asyou love thyself.

God tells us in verse 5; that he will punish the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth gen-eration and in verse 6; but showinglove to a thousand generations ofthose who love me and keep mycommandments.

Study, to show yourself approved.Continually go to the ultimate sourcefor refills. Its available thru prayer, study, loving one another and mostcertainlyto L-O-V-E our God.

It is about your 1 It is about your 1 It is about your 1 ststst Love. Love. Love. Something to think about when givingValentine gifts and cards this year.

O riginally, the celebration beganas Negro History Week in1926 and was created by CarterG. Woodson. Woodson was an estab-lished publisher, educator, scholar andhistorian for African Americans.

Eventually it grew to the month longcelebration that we have come to knowtoday. The month of February waschosen as the time to celebrate blackhistory because it accompanied thebirthdays of Fredrick Douglass and

    Abraham Lincoln.

When celebrating Black HistoryMonth, it is not only historical figures,of the world that should be recognizedthis month It is every African-

American that has made strides to-

wards freedom and defeating discrimi-nation. Thank you, Miranda Roseboro!

Pastor Learsons Message, How Is Your Heart!

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you yourheart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you andmove you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 Then you will livein the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.

    Ezekiel 36:24-28 (NIV)

    Rev. Louise Learson

One of my favorite scriptures is taken from Romans 8:28 .And we know that all things work together for good to those wholove God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

How is your heart? There was a time when our eld-ers would ask that question of each other. To-day, I ask that you keep that question in mindas you consider the condition of your mind, your body, and your soul.

Just as the people of Israel turned to idols, sodo we when we fail to guard our hearts.God wants to remove all that pollutes ourhearts. God wants to restore a clean heart and aright spirit within us. God wants that eachheart will be healed as we are careful aboutwhat we put into the mind, body, and spirit that

    are gifts from God.

As we celebrate the history of Black people, let us be mindful of the heri-tage that was entrusted to us by generations of our people. Let us strive to

build upon the proud legacy that is ours. Let us reach deep within our DNAand bring forth lessons that will lead us and future generations to a lifefilled with Godly purpose. Let us remember who we are in Christ and whowe are in the family of humanity. Today, let us commit to a renovation ofthe temple so that we may be fit to honor God with service born of love andgratitude.

As we examine our hearts, may we find that they are healthy, joyful, loving, brave, totally committed to Jesus Christ and to the service of the people ofGod.

Ezekiel 36:24-28 (NIV)24 For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countriesand bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, andyou will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your

    idols.26

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove fromyou your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit inyou and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 Thenyou will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will beyour God.

As we celebrate the month of love and legacy, May I ask you thequestion? Hows your heart, Friend?

Even though I was making a very good salary, I alwaysfooled myself into thinking I would start tithing with the nextraise, but I didn't. The things I coveted the most became my God.They were also my main concern and my prison. In other words,I painted myself into a corner with some pretty paint.

For example, new cars can be a blessing to us. We should lookfor practical, reliable transportation, but I wanted a car with allthe bells, and whistles. The nicer the car, the more they usu-ally cost. Add in the insurance, tires, routine maintenance, gas,and before the dust settles the cost is astronomical. Not to men-tion the immediate depreciation the owner suffers for driving itoff the sale's lot. In essence, I was living and working to support acar.

Everyone needs clothes/shoes, but trendy clothes and shoes are awaste. There were enough shoes or clothes in my closet for 3 or 4

people. Sometime later I discovered that trendy clothes go out ofstyle quickly and are usually not made of good quality materials.

I, also, rented a small trendy apartment in an upscale sideof town. But always remember, while renting; you

are paying the owner's mortgage. I furnished myapartment with trendy furniture. Most of

this furniture won't look as good when it's placedsomewhere else. It was expensive, and most ofit didnt last for very long. On top of allthese self made bills, I had the same monthly bills just like everyone else: (light, telephone, water, dry cleaning, haircuts), and I liked

eating several times every day. However, themore money I made, the more toys I boughtand the more expensive they became.

I ran in this endless cycle for years, until Irelented, and began listening and heeding toGod's voice. The enemy deceives us by tak-ing the things that God has blessed us with to

commit sin. We are blessed in this country beyond measure! So much so, until we takeeveryday things, which are miracles within

themselves for granted. For example, at a touchwe have heat, cooling, clean water, inside plumb-

ing/toilets, and cars. I dare say that most familiestoday have at least 2 cars. We fly in planes to almost

anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. We havefree education and successful jobs. This generation istruly benefiting from the prayers of our fore-fathers. Ifyou think that everyone in the world has these things,

trying visiting a third world country. We are constantly bom- barded with advertisements or commercials telling us that weneed all sorts of things to be happy. Consequently, we began tocovet things of the world.

By Bro. Charles MoodyCan You Afford Not To ?

I ll begin by saying that I have no desire to be a preacher or lay person. However; the Lord has putit on my heart to write about what I've learned abouttithing, and that's what I intend to do.

From what I've seen, most ministers don't preach about "tithing" more thanonce or twice a year. I feel their re-luctance stems from a fear of whattheir congregations might think or

say about them. However, sinceI'm not really threatened or both-ered by other people's opinions,

here's my spin on it..Looking back over theyears, I can hardly think

of anything that mygrandmother didn't teach

me a little bit about. But, I dont remember her saying muchabout tithing. When I was younger, shegave me small amounts of money to

pay in church. However; she neversat me down to explain its ration-ale or importance, unlike every-thing else.

I attended church until I lefthome as a young man. During

that time, I learned that Godexpected us to tithe. I had al-most no concept or under-standing of what this sacrificemeant because I wasn't pay-ing with my money. The gamechanges when you grow intoadulthood and began paying/spending the money you make.

After I left home, one of the re-quirements of my new job wasweekend work. Consequently, one

of the first things I did was to stopgoing to church all together. Oh, Iwent occasionally, but never regularly.

It was then when I discovered that theseabsences from church made my weekfeel incomplete. After a while, I finallyrealized that I needed Jesus in my life, so I drifted

back to the fold. However, even then I hardlyever paid my tithes. I listened closely in church, andat times I felt inspired to tithe, but I never seemedto have enough money to tithe..

When I realized that my problems were to numerousand too large for me to handle, for God, they werenothing. I then prayed for wisdom and understanding, and realized what I was doing wrong. After my eyeswere opened, I noticed that when I paid tithes from myheart, it always came back to me in some form or an-other. In Malachi, Chapter 3, Verse 6, the Bibleclearly proclaims that anytime I wasn't paying mytithes I was robbing God, and trying to outrun a curse! It also warns every one of the perils of the perilsof oppressing workers, not helping widows, or or-

phans, exerting unjust hardship on a foreigner, orthose who do not fear the "Lord of hosts."

In 2 Corinthians, the 13th verse Paul wrote: For I donot mean that others should be eased and you bur-dened, (14) but by an equality, that now at this timeyour abundance may supply their lack, that their abun-dance also may supply your lack, that there be fair-ness.

    (15) As it is written, "Whoever gathered much had nothingleft over, and whoever gathers little had no lack." Does thismean as Christians we should work and give all of thefruits of our labor to others in need? No! The scriptureclearly explains that we are required to help others with ourover abundance, and by the same token of faith in our timeof need, they'll help us.

Some people try to justify themselves for not paying tithes by feigning concern over how God's money is spent. NoticeI said it's God's money, it's not yours. Always be on guardfor any feeling of entitlement. Recognize them and pray forenlightenment! In my opinion, as long as the collections/tithes are being used for the building of God's kingdom, they are being used for their intended purpose! However, ifyou still have some overriding concern about these funds, then volunteer for one of the churchs many committees,

boards, or auxiliaries to determine how the money isused. Besides in this age of automation, it is very easy toaccount for the funds collected, and to see how theyare used.

Being the caregiver of a person with Alzheimers, Iknow very well the requirement of their 24/7 directcare needs. However, I often forget that the patientscircumstances, mental or physical, are not just what they used

to be.Recently, I found a poem titled, Do Not Ask Me to Remem-

ber. A poem that reminded me of the limitations we facewhen considering how to make better the living situation of a

    person with Alzheimers.

In my walk with God, I am slowly learning the level ofstrength that He has given me. The walk is neither easy orreal rewarding. But thru my experience, I have come to a

better knowledge of what Jesus means in His teachings ofhow to be a true servant.

In this walk of personal servant-hood, Ive experienced a lotof emotional differences. At times I do feel so alone in thiswalk.

But I also know, Im not alone. I have the blessed assuranceof knowing that God is always with me. Yet there are timeswhen the feeling of being isolated from other humans isoverwhelming. At times I feel so far away from everyoneelse. The times when I live from week-end to week-end justwaiting to enjoy the company of other people .

I know we all have numerous obligations to fulfill. Althoughyou may feel overwhelmed, try not to neglect or show thosein need how much you care. Make a visit or a phone call, whatever the Holy Spirit may lead you to do or say. Godgives us a spirit of discernment. We are able to see how and

what our brothers and sisters in Christ may need.

Todays old fashion day,is not the fashion of my day

By Sis Rosa Thompson as told to Sis Marilyn Roseboro

Todays old fashion day, is not the fashion of my day. In my day everybody hadclothes just for Sunday's.

When we went to church, everyone had on their Sundays very best. The men woretheir suits with white shirts. The women wore their best dresses with hats, gloves, anda fur stole if it was winter. In the summer they wore their prettiest dress and ofcourse it was completed with a hat, gloves, stockings, and a purse. The children werealso dressed in their Sunday-go-to-meetings clothes.

Women wore aprons and bonnets when visiting and attending a ball game. Theaprons were used to carry their money, snuff and whatever else they needed. Thebonnets they wore were to keep the sun off their faces.

Miss Rosie said her parents and people of that era would think our style of dress(Sunday's clothes) is disrespectful. They wore their best on Sunday, because duringthe week they wore whatever, whatever. On Sunday, not only did they give God theirbest praise, but they also wanted to look the part, and wear their Sundays best.

He llo Everyone! Its that time of year and we are celebrating another Valentines Day.And youre thinking, What is the best gift of all that Ill get this year? Yep, once ayear, we celebrate love to the highest level.

But, when dealing with love, you must understand that true love is only through Jesus Christ. Wesay we love each other in our families and in other relationships. But when tested and you gothrough storms, where are the ones that say they truly love you?

The surprise is that when you are tested by God, he will show you the way and its up to us asChristians to follow what He says. As in history, mankind does so truly love one another, but weoften flee in fear because of what we believe as the unknown factors. In this bible verse I found aresounding truth; Leviticus 19:18, "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your peo-

ple, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

ow if you are like me, you know people tend to hold grudges against you. But if you truly love aperson, you forgive them for their sins against you and make peace with them. Share love this wayand you will be mightily blessed. onetheless I have had a person tell me to my face, I dont haveto talk to you or respect you after forgiving you? ow with allthat ,I just say in my mind, What bible are you reading?

Offering love to someone can lead you to a great place. Especially ifyou let the love flow and shine. It will bring you to that much higherplace. This is a quote that really hit my heart about love, and I love

it . Exodus 15:13, "In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holydwelling .

ow last but not least if you truly know your God mate, never giveup on what God has brought special into your life. In closing, wefind love and we go through storms. If you can weather the stormsand prevail, youll find true happiness with your God mate.

The word says to Pray with-out ceasing. We intend todo just that, never waver-ing. St James, God is justbeginning to show uswhat he can do if we onlytrust and believe in Him, inHis power and in His might.

How can you not feel themove of God in our Sundaymorning worship services, the love of God in thiscongregation, the children of God coming to-gether as one body. God is truly not finished withus , this is only the beginning. The move of God is

here. We will continue to pray on Tuesday nightat 6:30 and we ask that you call out the prayer min-istry when you pray, and know that we are prayingfor you. If you have any special requests please letPastor Learson know and we will talk to God onyour behalf.

Remember, as individuals, we do not have thepower to change anything or anybody. BUT WITHGOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE, THATWE TRULY BELIEVE. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

19 "Again I say to you, that if two of you agree onearth about anything that they may ask, it shall bedone for them by My Father who is in heaven.20 "For where two or three have gathered together inMy name, I am there in their midst."Matthew 18: 19-20

Saint James is commissioned to be a communityof growing Christians seeking to know andcarry out the will of God.

By producing kingdom citizens through Wor-ship, Discipleship, Service and Evangelism.

.And by ministering to the spiritual , emotional, intellectual and physical needs of our membersas well as our neighbors

    St James UMC Lamplighter

The first time the word prayer was used in the Bible,

it was in a family situation (see Genesis 20:7 and17). After Abraham deceived Abimelech into thinkingSarah was his sister to keep from being killed, God re-vealed the truth to Abimelech in a dream telling him to re-store Sarah and then Abraham would pray for him. TheLord had closed fast all the wombs of the household of Abi-melech because of his taking Sarah; and then "Abrahamprayed to God' and God healed Abimelech and his wife andhis maids so that they bore children" (Genesis 20:17). andprayer has been a critical part of biblical family life eversince.

Prayer involves God. How can a simple thing like prayerdo such a monumental job in our families. When our chil-dren have rebelled and broken the family ties, prayer callson God who always can and will reach down to them nomatter where they are scattered around the world. He willintervene in their lives no matter what they are doing. Thisis the God who can protect them in the most dangeroussituations and rescue then in all crises---if we pray.

God is so faithful. Our God who is never spiteful or pettylike we sometimes are. God can help us to forgive whenwe don't want to and also to love when we can't love oneanother , or sometimes when we are unwilling to love oneanother. So as we pray this month we are interceding forfamilies who are in abusive relationships, family memberswho are in need of physical, mental, and spiritual restora-tion.

We are believing God for salvation to come to every house-hold in our community, neighbors, loved one and even ourenemies. God is awesome and can be everything that weneed him to be. St James , don't ever underestimate the

    power of prayer.

The month of February is the month that we celebrate African pride as wellas Valentines Day. When the month ends, the cultural festival often endand African-American History and the spirit of Valentines Day seem todisappear for another 11 months.

A large number of people I have met think that this should be a 12-month affair. Every home library should include Black literary classicssuch as W.E.B. Dubois The Souls of Black Folks and Carter G.Woodsons The egro in Our History. And when children are assignedbook reports and other school-related homework, parents can suggest thestudy of African-American heroes and heroines like The first African-American General in the Air Force who served as Commander of the WWIITuskegee AirmenGeneral Benjamin O. Davis Jr, or The first female West

Point graduate to die in Iraq who was the highest-ranking black and His-panic woman cadet in the schools history, or A Cobra pilot with MarineLight Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, who is the United States militarysfirst black female combat pilot, to name a few.

Parents should give their children a sense of personal tradition by talkingto them about their own family history. Who were their ancestors? Whatpart of the country did their family come from? Parents must help childrento understand that the past not only affects the present but also the future inwhich they will raise their own children. Our children must understand,

just as previous generations have understood that while things may be diffi-cult or they may not be the way you want them to be, understanding the

past provides hope for the future.I will close my thoughts with a note on Love. Jesus said in Luke 23:34

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. This is love at itsbest. He could have said, Father, get even with them, or father, let loose themighty thunderbolts of righteous wrath and destroy them, or Father, openthe flood gates of justice and permit the staggering avalanche of retributionto pour upon them. But none of these were his response. Though subjectedto inexpressible agony, suffering excruciating pain, and despised and re-

jected, nevertheless, he cried, Father, forgive them. Jesus matched wordswith action. Jesus talked passionately about forgiveness. Jesus clearly in-formed us that forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a permanent atti-

tude.Let us never forget that our Lord and Master

was nailed to the cross because of human blindness. Those who crucified him knew not what they did.The point is this: The heart can never be totallyright if the head is totally wrong. One must possessspiritual strength to love like Jesus.

Bd. chair, Sis Marilyn Roseboro, has stated I understandthat sometime you may not have time to do so but in that case,

please give her note on Sunday mornings. but we can do allthings thru god who strengthens us.

God has blessed St. James with many talents and we see they are being used for the glory of our God.

Amother lifts her child to heaven

    in exchange for God's blessings.

She leaves her homeHer journeys longTrusting God for provision and protection.

God hears her prayer like Hannahfor Samuel. He hastens to her voice.

Gathers angels from townsWhere love and faith might aboundWinston Salem, Denver, and Detroit.

    They gather round abouther soul

    A journey now begins.

All gathered nighBy the most HighThis Red Soil and Black Skin.

H aving walked the walkThe soil of fathers, mothers and their kinThe dust of love and freedomThis Red Soil and This Black Skin.

From Tuckers Grove to lands unknownThis Legacy beginsFor we shall overcome this worldBy our Red Soil and Black Skin.

From 1st grade educationsTo Now here Doctorates we findThis Red Soil and this Black SkinIs the tie that binds.

For the times we've laughedFor times we've cried

As we walk our sacred groundThis Red Soil and This Black SkinIs seen by all around.

In every eye you see the soulof one now baptized in.This ChurchThis life we live in ChristThis Red Soil and This Black Skin.

have been published and Carlton vigorously proclaims his loves for God, professing God as his utmost love.

I wrote this poem while reflecting on life circumstancesthat gave me hope and even more precious, has givenme humility!I thought of the times Ive spent right here in Denver. Al-though the world teaches how working allows us to attainstatus and stuff. But, sometimes you have to look at yourlife and all the culmination of events, all the intricacies andnuances that have occurred to bring you to the place youcurrently occupy. Whether good or bad, it matters notknowing both joy and sorrow builds character teaching youcompassion and equality.

Also, I have learned according to the prophet Zechariah:Not to despise humble beginnings (Zech 4:10). My begin-nings remind me of dirt roadsOtis and Vera ShippJohnnyLeeLittle Sonand the most vivid memories are of mygrandparents from both my mother and father. But, there isone memory that inspired me to write this poem.

I was a little boy and my grandfather, Thomas Roseboro, was working in his garden, tilling the soil. Beingcuri- ous, I ran out to see the machinethat was breaking up that red soil. I

watched him push it and fightthe earth- to earn the fruit ofhis labor. He looked at me and

smiled that gentle smile sayinin his southern North Kack-

G od grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change;courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time;Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway topeace;Taking, as He did, this sinful world

as it is, not as I would have it;Trusting that He will make all things rightif I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this lifeand supremely happy with HimForever in the next.
