    Vocational View

The Baptism of Our Lord - January 10, 2021 The Son of God is manifested to the world first through the visit of the magi. Today God's Son is brought into the world and is present to the world through His Church. If you think God is calling you to a Church vocation, contact Father Josh Johnson at (225) 336-8778, [email protected], or visit www.diobr.org/vocations.

Just a Reminder! Our office will be closed and there will be no services on Monday, January 18th in observance for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

    Louisiana Life March South

    January 23, 2021 10 AM - Noon

Louisiana State Capitol 900 N. 3rd Street, Baton Rouge, LA

The 2021 Louisiana Life March South will be on Saturday, Jan. 23 in downtown Baton Rouge. We are still unsure if a march will be permitted, but we will have a rally on the Louisiana State Capitol steps and grounds. Please visit prolifelouisiana.org/louisiana-life-march-south/ for more details.

Military and First Responders We are updating the display cases in the narthex to include current military servicemen and women and current police officers, firefighters, and EMS staff who are parishioners or close family members of parishioners. Please contact Jason in the office at 775-8850 or [email protected] to submit names. We will request a current official service photo (either electronic or hard copy). This project may take a month or two, so your patience is appreciated. The goal is to honor those who risk their lives to protect and serve us, and to remind us to pray for them frequently.

  • Candlemas The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, traditionally known as Candlemas, is coming up on February 2nd. We will bless candles at the weekend Masses on January 30th and 31st. Feel free to bring your own candles to Mass to be blessed, or we will provide small candles in the narthex (one candle per household, please). If you aren’t able to attend Mass that weekend, we will leave any remaining candles in the narthex the following week for you to pick up; the church will be open during office hours. Blessed candles are useful for storms, sick calls, personal devotions, home shrines, or when you aren’t able to attend Mass but watch or listen from home. As with all sacramentals of the Church, we don’t use blessed candles in a superstitious way, but to express our Catholic certainty in the Almighty Father’s loving providence, in Jesus’ power to save, and in the Holy Ghost’s presence to sanctify and transform us.

    Blessing of Throats

Wednesday, February 3rd is the Feast of St. Blase. St. Blase was a bishop in Armenia in the fourth century who is said to have miraculously healed a boy who was choking on a fishbone. Since the eighth century, he has been venerated as a patron of the sick, especially those with diseases of the throat. Fr. Frank will offer the traditional blessing of throats after the 6 PM Mass on Tuesday night, February 2nd, and the 7:15 AM Mass on Wednesday morning, February 3rd.

Feast of Faith: The Sign of the Cross

At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction.

In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co
