Help make our Paschal Season joyous! There are envelopes in the rear of the Church to make a do-nation for Easter flowers. Donations may be made in memory of a loved one, for the intention of a loved one who is still living, for an anniversary, a birthday, or for some other special intention!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every rectory office has received a panicked phone call from a person who has been invited to serve as a godparent, or from someone newly engaged, who suddenly “needs to get confirmed.” While the lack of confirmation is not an ob-stacle for marriage, it is for godparenting. Many are sur-prised that the Church seems to be looking for a kind of sac-ramental “seal” on one’s baptism before the door opens fully to this ministry. Yet if you think about it, would you want someone to guide you to a place that he or she had not yet been? A godparent has to be someone who has “been there” and knows the way. Although signet rings and wax seals have passed from use, our society depends on “seals of approval” ranging from certificates of quality to the familiar safety seals on medicines and foods. While Eucharist is the “seal” of the sacrament of baptism, there is a sense in which one’s Chris-tian initiation is also incomplete without confirmation. Have you been confirmed? Perhaps it’s time to inquire now, before you have to make that dreaded phone call! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Hughʹs will celebrate those graduating from 8th grade, high school, and college on May 25 at the 11 a.m. Mass. All graduates are encouraged to attend this Mass in their cap and gowns. A reception will follow in Grenoble Hall. For more

Rice Bowl Collection: Thank you, St. Hugh parishioners, for your generosity to the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Project. To date you have donated about $2200! Sweet! We are still accepting your donations. You may place the “bowls” in the very large “Rice Bowl” on the table in the back of the church. Checks made payable to St. Hugh with “CRS Rice Bowls” on the memo line may be placed in the Rectory mail slot.

From the Pastor

On this Mother’s Day, I’d like to say a word of appreciation to all our mothers. Thank you for choosing the path of motherhood; for placing your unique, irreplaceable feminine gifts at the service of your children; for giving us (along with our fathers) the gift of life; for giving us your love; for helping us to see how precious we are because we are loved; for introduc-ing us to God, who is love itself, and for constantly worrying if we are well, and doing what we’re supposed to do, and putting into practice the life-lessons you have tried to teach us.

Without our moms, we simply wouldn’t be. Without their resolute love for us, we would al-ways wonder, imperfect as we know ourselves to be, whether we are worth the time and effort. Our moms assure us that we are worth all the time and effort: worth the countless in-conveniences and heartaches we cause them, worth the years of worry and anxiety, prayer and long-suffering, and being taken for granted, that are the lot of all mothers.

I wonder why it took so long for Mother’s Day to be invented. I wonder why we are content to simply take and take and take from our mothers while giving them so little in return. And yet, our thoughtlessness seems hardly to deter that maternal caring which stretches so lavishly in every direction to soothe and support and secure us throughout our lives.

Yes, one day out of year for our moms is scant repayment for a debt that we can never fully repay. But some repayment is in order, much more than what flowers or a card or a nice meal can hope to provide. (Though these small tokens are very important!) How can we truly begin to repay our mothers except by embracing the values they have tried and per-haps are still trying to teach us?—

that life is worth living despite its many hurts and constant disappointments;

that love is not a matter of sentiment but of persevering commitment in good times and bad;

that there can be no gain in anything without an expenditure of effort, or advancement in life without the practice of patience and humility;

that life is full of tears, which come both from unavoidable sorrows and unforeseen joys;

that wisdom and peace are the work of a lifetime, and there are no shortcuts to either; so don’t waste your time looking for them because they don’t exist;

And that, most of all, no matter what—no matter what—your mother will always love you because she is your mother, and you are precious to her.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms and to all our mothers’ sons and daughters.

Yours in Christ,

Father Walter
