AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very syna-gogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The ten-sions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mis-sion for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s read-ings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. UNA MISIÓN CONTINUA En la sinagoga de su pueblo natal, los vecinos se maravillaban con las palabras de Jesús. No obstante, se preguntaban: “¿No es este el hijo de José?” Con seguridad la gente sabía quién era Jesús. El hijo del carpintero. El joven que aprendió en esa mis-ma sinagoga. El muchacho de la calle. El conflicto surge cuando Jesús empieza a definirse de una manera nueva. Las tensiones aumentan cuando se compara con los antiguos profetas Elías y Eliseo. Las tensiones se multiplican cuando Jesús empieza a ha-blar de una nueva misión para el pueblo de Dios: la Buena Nueva de la Escritura está dirigida a todos. En su famoso pasaje de la primera carta a los Co-rintios, san Pablo nos recuerda la naturaleza del amor eterno. El amor no termina. LLEVAR A LOS NIÑOS A MISA: PARTE I

"Entonces le fueron presentados unos niños para que les impusiera las manos y orase; pero los discí-pulos les reñían. Mas Jesús les dijo: «Dejen que los niños vengan a mí, y no se lo impidan porque de los que son como éstos es el Reino de los Cielos." (Mt 19:13-14). Algunas parroquias católicas en las últimas décadas han seguido los pasos de muchos lugares de culto no católicos y han encontrado maneras de desterrar educadamente a los niños pequeños de la congrega-ción durante toda o parte de la Misa. Algunos lo lla-man "iglesia para los niños" o algo parecido. Ver esas cosas siempre han pesado mucho sobre mí y no veo cómo los católicos podemos leer las palabras de Nuestro Señor acerca de los niños y luego no darles la bienvenida al Santo sacrificio de la Misa... donde Jesucristo mismo está verdaderamente presente. Mi esperanza es que algún día tengamos un progra-ma ocasional para que los niños pequeños ayuden a los padres a enseñarles acerca de la Misa para que no sean sólo espectadores, sino que puedan empezar a comprender lo que está teniendo lugar, incluso a una edad temprana. Dicho esto, yo les prometo que mientras yo sea Párroco, no habrá ningún programa en San Henry que envíe regular-mente a los niños lejos de la Misa. A los padres que traen sus hijos llorando, gri-tando, que se comportan mal en la iglesia se-mana tras semana: ¡GRACIAS! Ustedes están haciendo lo que cualquier buen padre católico debe hacer; traer a sus hijos a Jesús. Se supone que las familias oran juntas. Cuando tienes pequeños, a ve-ces, la oración puede ser una aventura. Lean el men-saje del Párroco del próximo domingo para algunos consejos de cómo llevar a los niños pequeños a la Iglesia.

BRINGING CHILDREN TO MASS: PART I

“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples re-buked the people; but Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such be-longs the kingdom of heaven’ (Mt 19:13-14). Some Catholic parishes in recent decades have fol-lowed in the footsteps of many non-Catholic places of worship and found ways to politely banish young children from the congregation during all or part of the Mass. Some call it “children’s church” or some-thing similar. Seeing such things has always weighed heavily upon me and I do not see how we Catholics can read Our Lord’s words about children and then not welcome them to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass…where Jesus Christ Himself is truly present. My hope is to one day have an occasional program for young children to help parents teach them about the Mass so that they are not just spectators but can actually begin to grasp what is taking place, even at a young age. That being said, I promise you that as long as I am Pastor, there will not be any pro-gram at St. Henry’s that regularly sends chil-dren away from the Mass. To the parents who bring their crying, screaming, misbehaving children to church week after week: THANK YOU! You are doing what any good Catholic parent should do; bringing your children to Jesus. Families are supposed to pray together. When you have little ones, sometimes, the prayer can be an adventure. See next Sunday’s Pastor’s Message for some tips for bringing young children to church.

Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed is a new five-part study on the Mass that features power-ful cinematography, inspiring presenters, and engag-ing workbook resources.
