Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Runcorn Town. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. It has been a while, three weeks in fact since we last had a home game here at Edge Green Street when we hosted AFC Blackpool and got back to winning ways with a fantastic 3-2 victory against the odds having played a large portion of the contest with a reduced compliment as Danny Clarke and Artjoms Butorins were sent off and as a consequence will be suspended for this afternoon’s contest, Danny will also miss Tuesday’s game against Everton and next Saturday’s visit to Maine Road. We then visited Silsden in the League Cup and came away with another well fought victory this time a 1-0 success with “Tom” Butorins netting his first goal for the club and a rare clean sheet in the bargain. The road trip continued with the short trip to Prescot to take on AFC Liverpool despite a half time deficit Town bounced back and levelled through skipper Mike Burns before Andy Olsen netted a late header as it looked to be three wins in a row but an AFC Liverpool goal deep in added on time denied the visitors the win. A late goal was to cost us dear again last Saturday as Alsager Town secured a 3-2 win with a debatable late penalty with Olsen and Butorins on the scoresheet for St Helens. Tuesday’s visit to Bootle got off to a great start when Mike Burns netted his second goal in three matches just two minutes into the contest but this lead did not last long as the hosts levelled with ten minutes on the clock before succumbing to a 5-1 reverse. Town will know that they have a tough contest on their hands this afternoon as they plat host to the league leaders whom defeat St Helens 4-2 in September. We look forward to hosting Everton in the Liverpool Senior Cup Quarter Final on Tuesday evening and hope that you will all join us here for what should be a mouth watering contest. Let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto a good result. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Runcorn Town were formed in 1967 under the name of Mond Rangers FC. They played for the first few years in the Runcorn Sunday league, and in 1973 they made the decision to try Saturday football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL). In their first season they finished as runners up, and after amalgamating with ICI Weston for the 1974/75 season, they became one of the strongest sides in the league. They remained in the WDL until 1984 when they were elected to join the West Cheshire League (WCL) Division Two.

Mond established themselves as a good, solid mid-table team until the 1991/92 season when they won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl as well as a respectable sixth place finish. The following season they finished third in the league and reached the Bowl final, with another third place finish the following season in which they scored 100 goals and regaining the Bowl. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring 118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost to Poulton Victoria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere. Despite sharing the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy in that first season, Division One proved a struggle and they were relegated for the first time in the clubs history in 2001/02. Success returned in 2004/05 with the team finishing as runners up in Division Two, winning the Runcorn Senior Cup and reaching the final of the Bowl. Ahead of the 2005/06 season, the club changed their name to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more professional look to the club in general, and hopefully increase support from both businesses and individuals in the local community. A decision was also made to try and improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the North West Counties League. The season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time.

. . . Runcorn Town AFC The following three seasons saw top four finishes, although the main progression was off the field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the North West Counties League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history. It is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations, with the team losing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners-up, with James McShane finishing as the league's overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quarter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup, whilst Warrington were held in the Cheshire Senior Cup before losing on penalties. In the clubs' FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote headlines as they progressed through four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS, the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition. This season sees the club playing at the highest level it has ever played, and success last season will also see FA Cup football coming to the club for the first time.

Bootle v St Helens Town Tuesday 8th November 2011 North West Counties League, Premier Division Bootle 5-1 St Helens Town St Helens Town got off to the ideal start to their contest at Bootle when an early right wing corner was sent into the box by Che Morgan and skipper Michael Burns was first to react bundling the ball home at the far post. This was the third time in last three matches that the hosts had conceded in the first five minutes of a contest on this occasion however they were not behind for long as one of four former Town players in the Bootle line-up was top level with ten minutes on the clock. Neil Prince was allowed too much time and space to get a shot off which beat Nick Jackson in the visitors goal but struck the left hand upright and rebounded to Lee Thompson who fired the loose ball home. Midway through the half Thompson was again in the action as he collected the ball on the left wing before driving inside and firing the ball just the bar from the edge of the area. Moments later strike partner and another former Town man Darren Byers was next to try his luck as he drew a fine save from Jackson with his effort from the edge of the box and the loose ball was cleared from danger. The pressure told just after the half hour when Che Morgan stopped a run from Byers by foul means but the violent reaction from the Bootle striker should have seen him dismissed but no disciplinary sanction was levied and from the resultant free kick Prince sent the ball over the top of the wall and into the net. Just before the interval Town were again on the end of a dubious decision as an attack saw the ball break to Ian Smith on the edge of the area and he thundered an effort which beat the home goalkeeper before hitting the underside of the crossbar and appearing to bounce down over the line before being cleared out of the area. Neither the referee nor his assistant on the near side signalled that the ball cross the line and the home side went into the interval with a goal advantage. The start of the second period saw the hosts press home their dominance and a period of pressure saw the visitors extend their advantage, a counter attack from a Town corner saw Prince released on the left and he and he cleverly lofted an effort over the advancing Jackson into the goal. Matters got worse for the visitors on 66 minutes when substitute Thomas Foley netted with his first touch as he was found by Thompson and fired home on the right hand post. At the other end a dangerous left wing corner was sent into the box by Colin Quirk and Michael Kavanagh rose highest to meet the centre but his header went just over the bar. The final goal came with eight minutes of the contest remaining when the hosts made it 5-1 and Prince completed his hat-trick, the visitors were hit with another counter from an attacking corner and the ball was cleared towards Byers who was closed down by Jackson just inside the area before the striker squared to his unmarked teammate and he fired home to round off the scoring. St Helens Town; Jackson, Corrie, Hansard, Quirk, Burns (C), S.Thompson, Clarke (Kavanagh 67), Smith (Frazer 72), Butorins (Owens 72), Olsen, Morgan. Subs Not Used; Flood, Roby.

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division against our friends and rivals from Runcorn Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have enjoyed a good journey and are treated to an entertaining encounter. Runcorn are currently occupying top spot with Flixton, Ramsbottom United, Bootle and Barnoldswick all in pursuit. They have had an excellent start to their life in the North West Counties League having secured promotion to the top flight at the first time of asking at the end of last term. We say a special warm welcome to former Town player Danny Salt who is assistant to Runcorn manager Simon Burton and congratulate them both on the Manager of the Month award for October. The two teams met at the Pavillions in early September and Runcorn ran out 4-2 victors on an evening of end to end action with our hosts taking an early two-goal lead before two Carl Addison strikes levelled the score early in the second half. Runcorn went on to secure the points and the game marked the superb record of striker James McShane who celebrated his 100th goal Runcorn goal in just 109 games. Since our last home fixture against AFC Blackpool, which secured a much needed victory courtesy of a 3-2 win, we have been on the road with a League Challenge Cup win at Alsager Town (0-1) and a 2-2 draw at resurgent AFC Liverpool which have been followed by two defeats, Last Saturday Nantwich Town’s Weaver Stadium saw our first defeat in four when we lost 3-2 to Alsager Town - the winning goal coming from a hotly disputed penalty three minutes from time. Our 5-1 loss in midweek at Bootle brought us back to earth with a bump and despite taking an early lead through Mike Burns the game saw the return of lacklustre performances throughout after a period of solidity. Hopefully today will see the lads battle hard for the points on offer and regain some pride after Tuesday’s poor showing. While we are suffering from a glut of injuries and suspensions we must still compete all over the park and players will be hoping to ensure their starting places on Tuesday evening as Everton make their way to Ashton when we entertain them in the Liverpool Senior Cup quarter finals.. Finally, give the lads your vocal encouragement and please join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate and St Helens Town ‘Man of the Match’ presentations. Next Saturday we travel to Maine Road for a NWCFL Premier Division fixture before two home fixtures against Squires Gate and Silsden. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

. . . Match Report and Photos Saturday 29th October 2011 NWCFL Challenge Cup, 2nd Round St Helens Town 1-0 Silsden (Match Played at Silsden) The focus turned to League Cup action as Town had to concede home advantage due to a clash with Landlords Ashton Town who hosted Runcorn Linnets in the same competition at Edge Green Street. Town were forced to travel to Silsden but took the setback well securing their passage to the third round of the competition with a solid 1-0 victory. Town started the faster of the two sides and threatened to blow Silsden away as they dominated the early exchanges. The first chance fell to Carl Addison after five minutes when he latched onto Iain Dyson’s through ball and fired an effort from the edge of the area which beat the goalkeeper but cannoned off the crossbar and away from danger. Moments later Andy Ledger collected a through ball and bore down on goal his effort from just inside the area was tipped just wide by Christian Padiat-Briggs in the Silsden goal. From the resultant corner Addision delivered Dyson met in on the front post flicking it goalwards only for the ball to be cleared off the line but Artjoms Butorins was on hand to turn the loose ball home opening his Town account. Further Town pressure saw Butorins released down the right and he found Dyson centrally but his effort went just over the bar. Dyson was quickly back in the action as his looping header from a free kick beat the keeper but again Town were foiled by the crossbar the rebound broke to Ledger but he was adjudged to have been in an offside position. Just after the half hour mark Colin Quirk released Ledger down the left flank and his ball was collected by Quirk who in turn found Butorins his effort was blocked and broke to Addison and his effort went just the wrong side of the upright for Town. Silsden created a couple of chances in the closing stages of the first half the first saw Kristian Hargreaves find space on the left of the Town area and Dale Newbrook had to be alert to turned the effort around the post, from the resultant corner Andy Lee delivered and Daniel McNulty will have been wondering how he did not steer his free header on target. Silsden came into the game more after the interval but it was Town who were to have to first chance of the half when Danny Clarke found Butorins and his dangerous cross was cut out on the front post by James Nettleton. From the corner the ball was cleared to Addison on the edge of the area and his effort was blocked breaking to Ledger and his overhead kick went wide of the target. Silsden were on the front foot dominating possession but failing to really trouble the Town backline for long periods. Just after the hour mark Hargreaves advanced down the left wing and found Daniel Bryan on the opposite side of the box but his effort went wide of the left hand post. Town looked dangerous on the counter attack and Ledger showed his pace as he collected a clearance getting into the area and seeing his effort pushed around the post with a fine save from Padiat-Briggs. With time running out Silsden tested Newbrook when Matt Moses fired a free kick from 25 yards goalwards but the keeper’s footwork was good and he gathered comfortably. Both sides had a chance each to score in added on time at the end of the contest. Town’s Andy Olsen almost took advantage of a poor goal kick as he collected and returned towards goal his touch was however heavy and allowed the keeper to recover to make a save at his feet before claiming the loose ball. Sisden’s chance came after a spot of pinball in the Town box with the ball breaking to Hargreaves who somehow managed to shoot wide of the target from a great position and this saw Town into the next round where they will visit Bootle.

NWCF League News . . . Manager of the Month Award - October 2011 Runcorn Town manager Simon Burton won the Premier Division manager of the month award for October (pictured right). Simon and his assistant Danny Salt were

presented with the award by League Chairman Dave Tomlinson prior to their side's game against Bootle last Saturday.

A Day of Coincidences for Bob and Steve Although Winsford United lost their Premier League encounter up at Silsden on Saturday, for two of the Blues officials the trip to West Yorkshire still turned out to be a notable one. Secretary Bob Astles and Assistant Secretary Steve Wright found themselves involved in a couple of remarkable coincidences on their visit to the Asda Foundation Stadium. Steve takes up the story.

“On arrival at the ground everything seemed normal, we grabbed ourselves a pie and cup of tea and retired to the clubhouse to await the start of the game. After handing in the team sheets to the ref, Bob and I eventually found a seat in the stand to watch the game. Mid-way through the first half, a lovely lady from Silsden persuaded us both to buy half time raffle tickets, although she did have to wait while Bob dived into his extremely deep pockets looking for a whole pound. Tickets bought, we settled down for the rest of the half. At half time we proceeded to the Hospitality room, where we were served tea and cakes by the same lady. She then asked me to draw the first raffle ticket, and before I did that she did say that over the last four weeks, consecutive ticket numbers had been drawn out each time. Well we changed that and went one better. I drew the first ticket which was 255, and Bob immediately said ‘That’s mine’. I thought he was joking but he proudly presented the winning ticket. Bob then drew out the second ticket, 253. I reached into my pocket and lo and behold there it was - number 253 in all its glory. Now what are the odds on that?

“After the break we returned to our seats, where we were immediately approached by a gentleman who introduced himself as Paul. He went on to explain that he was now the proud owner of 2000 shares in Winsford United, which he inherited from his uncle, Charles Bratt. We have quite a few shareholders that we have been unable to trace, from people who left the area with no forwarding address, families that just don’t know what they are, or certificates that were put away safe and then forgotten about. Paul said that Charles used to live in Stanthorne and had always followed the Blues. So, 85 miles from Winsford, we discovered one of the ‘missing’ shareholders we’d been looking for. Unfortunately for Paul the shares are not going to allow him to retire. But as I said before - what are the odds on that?

New Arrival at Glossop Glossop North End have announced that Garry Brown has joined the management team at Surrey Street as a coach. Garry will be working alongside Darren Green on developmental aspects of the playing side. A product of the Oldham Athletic Youth set up, Garry had a playing career abroad before becoming involved in coaching. More recently, Garry was Assistant Manager at Rossendale United, working alongside the current Hillmen management team of Paul Colgan

and Paul Williams.

Photos & Match Report . . . Saturday 5th November 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division Alsager Town 3-2 St Helens Town

St Helens Town were left to rue a late goal for the second time this week as this time there were denied a share of the spoils with a dubious late penalty converted with three minutes of normal time remaining. The early stages of the first period saw little of note and it took until the 27th minute for an attack of any note when the hosts Liegh Skellern latched onto a through ball and got into the area he was confronted Dale Newbrook in the St Helens goal and he made a great block at his feet and held the ball. At the other end Andy Olsen linked with Artjom Butorins with the latter turning his defender just inside the area and his effort went just the wrong side of the left hand upright. On 33 minutes Olsen was again in the action as he latched onto a fine through ball in the area and rounded the keeper which drove him wide he pulled the ball back toward Butorins but the ball was cleared and the chance lost. The half time break came at the right time for the visitors as the hosts had taken control for the game late in the half. Matt Pearson saw an effort blocked by a defender, Jack Sharrett struck an upright and James Marrow somehow managed to head wide when it seemed easier to score.

. . . St Helens Town v Alsager Town The second half started in the best possible way for St Helens as Andy Olsen was presented with a gift as a back pass was played short and he collected in before getting into the box before coolly firing past the home stopper to give the visitors an unlikely lead. The hosts quickly responded as they were again thwarted by Newbrook who made a double save from Skellern. The scores were levelled on 64 minutes when a mishit pass broke kindly to the right wing and was centred towards Marrow who turned the ball home. Matters got worse for the visitors when the hosts took the lead for the first time on 78 minutes a short corner was not dealt with by St Helens and the cross was fired low into the area where it broke to Pearson who fired home.

The closing stages were end to end and the visitors were next score as they levelled with six minutes of normal time remaining Substitute Mike Kavanagh’s surging run down the right culminated with him finding Butorins in the area and he managed to create space before applying a fine finish. When it seemed that St Helens had done enough to earn a share of the spoils they self destructed

causing their own problems, Andy Flood played a backpass to keeper Newbrook who had sustained an injury and was unable to kick and the stopper scuffed the attempted clearance which stayed in the area Marrow collected the ball and as he was closed down the defender appeared to get a touch on the ball with the striker theatrically tumbling to the ground the referee allowed play to continue but the assistant appreciative of the swan dive awarded the spot kick which Liam Rigby converted to secure the points for the hosts. Alsager Town; Harrison, Burge (Ellis 59), Ledwards, Clarkson, Bowyer (C), Mitchell (Pearson 15), Marsahall, Rigby, Marrow, Skellern (Johns 74), Sharrett. Subs Not Used; Barlow, Heaps.

Glyn Jones’ Programme Review 7 . . . Blast from the past ACCRINGTON STANLEY RES v ST. HELENS TOWN – Lancashire Junior Cup, First Round, Saturday, 20th November 1948 In their second season after re-forming after the War, Town travelled to Peel Park on their debut in the Lancashire Junior Cup, where they faced Accrington Stanley Reserves. Stanley produced a full 8-page programme for the game, printed red on white paper for a cover price of 2d. There was only a brief sentence introducing the opposition, expressing the hope they would progress to the next round (which they duly did). The main story in the “Club Jottings” was the news that Stanley had been drawn away to Hull City at Boothferry Park in the First Round of the FA Cup and they were hoping to share in a possible 40,000 gate (the average at Hull that season was in excess of 30,000 – happy days!) Town’s team, as printed in the

programme, was Trautmann, Haydock, Gaskell, A. Thompson, Twist, Ashton, J. Hughes, Pheasant, S. Thompson, McCann and Gregory. Adverts included Dutton’s OBJ ale (“Oh Be Joyful”) brewed at the Blackburn Brewery, an appeal for kitchen food scraps to be donated to the Food Front Benefit and an appeal for ex-officers, W.O.s and N.C.O.s to join the Territorial Army at the Drill Hall in Moscow Hill Street, Church. Newly-formed British Railways were advertising evening trips to Blackpool for 3s. 9d. (19p) and for an extra shilling admission could be had to the Tower or the Winter Gardens. On a level playing field FLIXTON v ST. HELENS TOWN – NWCL Premier Division, Saturday, 17th September 2011 Flixton have failed to produce programmes for the last three years, but this time around, there was an offering of 8 A4 sheets, roughly stapled together, for £1. The cover was nothing more than the NWCFL badge and another three sheets were taken up with Town’s club history, downloaded from the visitors’ website. Another two pages featured squad lists for each of the teams whilst the remaining two sheets had one on Flixton’s history (apparently not updated since 2009) and what can only be described as the “title page” which had the game down as Flixton v [blank opponents], no date (other than 2010), kick-off [blank] and the expressions “No Kaka”, “No Rooney” and “Great Pies”, which wasn’t entirely accurate as there were no pies on sale at all. In fact, there was no food at all, other than bags of crisps. There was, however, plenty of beer and, as usual, live football on the big screen in the clubhouse, some of which was apparently shown courtesy of a Greek de-coder. All clubs at this level work on a shoestring budget and most are run by a few enthusiasts, but this publication surely takes the proverbial.

They’re in a different league GATESHEAD v SOUTHPORT – Blue Square Bet Premier, Tuesday, 18th October 2011 “The Tynesider” is an outstanding publication, which would rank alongside most programmes produced by Football League clubs. Priced at £2.50 and running to 56 large, glossy pages, most in full colour, the issue for the Southport game was an excellent read with many articles on the visitors, including a lowdown on the town of Southport and its famous residents, past and present, who include Dora Bryan, Marc Almond, Lee Mack and Sir Anthony Quayle, interviews with the visiting manager Liam Watson and visiting player Steve Akrigg, detailed pen pictures of the Southport squad (including former Town midfielder Karl Ledsham, who had a very good game). There were also pieces from the home manager Ian Bogie and skipper Kris Gate, detailed statistical articles and a hilarious article by Stuart Hammonds from the Non-

League Paper entitled “Insult to Injury” , cataloguing freak injuries suffered by professional footballers, amongst the funniest of which were Lee Hodges of Barnet who wrenched his groin slipping on a bar of soap in the shower, Mark Statham of Stalybridge Celtic who missed a game after he trapped his head in the door of his car and Tony Pennock of Newport County who tripped over a tree when walking backwards mowing his lawn. Unfortunately for Pennock, the mower blade sliced through his shoe and four toes. Other articles of interest included Reserve and Youth reports as well as a Programme Review, which featured Ebbsfleet United’s offering against “The Heed”, which rated 7/10.
