With Faith, We Can Move St. Helen’s Parish By Rev. Victor C. Yakubu, Parochial Vicar
A 90-day period is enough to settle down in a new house or a new environment. Fr. John Ssegawa, the pastor and I arrived St. Helen’s parish in July and to be honest, many things have happened. The rectory was somewhat remodeled all over to accommodate two of us; desks, small appliances, etc.
Soon after I began to ask myself, how can two African priests minister in a parish dominated by Whites with Latinos, Asians and few Africans? Will people understand our accents and inflections? If they do, then what can we do to add value to St. Helen’s parish? Will the parishioners of St. Helen’s be open to us and welcome us? So many questions kept hanging in my mind and Fr. Ssegawa had the same feelings too. I began to talk with Fr. Ssegawa and he said to me, “We are here to serve as priests. So let’s do that.” I got encouragement from his words.
By 2014, St. Helen’s Parish would be 40 years. The parish has come a long way. The expectations are high and every parishioner is seeking to have the parish move to the next level. I am glad we have had two Town Hall meetings which opened up a reservoir of ideas from parishioners. I enjoyed the experience. I look forward to a strategic pastoral plan for the parish which will encompass our short term plans as well as our long term plans. The parish council has been in full support of this and I am happy that we are all collaborating with the diocese to bring out a vision of what we want our faith community to be in the next 10 years and beyond.
I must admit that Fr. Ssegawa and I feel welcome to serve in the parish. I thank the parishioners for their welcome. I feel that we all have to unite to make things work. This year is an important year in the life of our Church. It’s the 50th anniversary of the beginning of Vatican II. And so the year is proclaimed the Year of Faith (11 October 2012 – 24 November 2013) and I am glad that we are beginning on that note. Jesus has told us that with faith we can move mountains. I strongly believe that with faith we can move St. Helen’s parish to greater heights, to new levels of love and spiritual nourishment of all our parishioners. The pastor and I cannot do it alone. We need the complete support of our parishioners to make this parish the best in the valley. This is what the pastor professed when he was installed on 8 August by our dear shepherd Bishop Thomas Olmsted. I am sure we all need to make the difference among the parishes of the Diocese of Phoenix, and this is possible only when we realize that every idea is important to the spiritual growth of our parish. The pastor has said several times that we will operate with an open door policy where every issue can be discussed instead of lost in rumors. We do not want our parishioners to misconstrue our good intentions. We love Jesus and it’s because of this love that brought us out of Africa to serve parish communities in the United States. We are for your good and we mean well.
The greatest joy in this parish is the hard work of the staff and volunteers. We are thrilled by the support they offer to us and indeed to parishioners when they come for any pastoral assistance. Fr. Ssegawa and I need such zeal to move St. Helen’s parish. Sometimes the journey could be rough, but Jesus is tough. This Sunday’s gospel from Mark 10: 35 – 45, Jesus says to all of us, “The Son of man came not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.” We are here to serve, will you support us? There’s room in the Church, please come in.

Worship is giving God the best that He has
given you. Be careful what you do with the
best you have. Whenever you get a blessing
from God, give it back to Him as a love gift.
Take time to meditate before God and offer
the blessing back to Him in a deliberate act
of worship. If you hoard a thing for yourself,
it will turn into spiritual dry rot, as the
manna did when it was hoarded. God will
never let you hold a spiritual thing for
yourself; it has to be given back to Him that
He may make it a blessing to others.

TO ALL THE FAITHFUL....
Excerpts from pastoral letter on the
occasion of the Year of Faith by: Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted
In their encounter with Christ, Christians seek to conform themselves to Him and grow in faith (cf Rom 12:2). The heart of evangelization, and the dynamism of the New Evangelization, is this personal encounter that makes Christians authentic witnesses to the love that Christ has for each one of us. This personal relationship with Christ compels us to share Him with others: “It is the love of Christ that fills our hearts and impels us to evangelize.” In this Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI calls each of the faithful “to profess the faith in fullness and with renewed conviction, with confidence and hope,” rediscovering the content of faith that we celebrate, live and believe.* Throughout the Diocese, the faithful and all those who serve our parishes and apostolates will be given opportunities to publicly profess their faith in the Risen Lord. This profession will mean we are re-committing ourselves to a deeper relationship with Christ and His Church, as well as to the task of proclaiming the Good news in our “homes...among our families...so that everyone may feel a strong need to know better and...transmit to future generations the faith of all times.”*

SAVE THE DATE November 26 - 28
Please plan to attend the Parish Mission at the start of advent this year. This three day mission is for all parishioners so please save these dates and join us for a week of reflection and prayer.
ATTENTION EDGE/MIDDLE
SCHOOL !!
All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are invited to join us in a night of service and fun. Each
year our High School Students build and run a Haunted House in order to supply food for the St. Vincent de Paul pantry here at St. Helen Parish.
Aside from the Haunted House located in the basement of the Teen Center, we also provide crafts, games and activities for younger children in the rooms upstairs. This is where we need extra hands! Please come and join us as we serve the children of our parish as well as collect food for an important cause.

St. Helen's Pro-Life Ministry, wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to all of our parishioners and the leaders and members of St. Helen's Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for their outstanding support of August's Baby Bottle Fundraiser benefiting 1st Way Pregnancy Resource Center. A total of $2,678.00 has been collected, and the money is still coming in. Please return any leftover baby bottles (empty or not) to the Parish Office to use for future fundraisers. Each bottle costs $1.00 and that is money that could save a life. St. Helen's Pro-Life Ministry also wishes to thank our own Mary Jo and Leo Ohnemus for their generous donation of a beautiful painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This painting will grace many pro-life events in the coming years and was blessed by Father Soloman before he moved. Our Lady is being stored on the mantle at the home of Ann Hughes and may be borrowed for Parish events by calling her at 623-915-3457. Thank you so much. God bless and keep all of you.
Calling all CURSILLISTAS! ULTREYA: Please join us for a multi-parish Ultreya and Potluck on Friday, October 26 at St. James Parish. (19640

PLEASE ASSIST US: One of the goals we want to accomplish this year is to have a current list of all Cursillistas who attend St. Helen. This would make it possible to contact you w/news of upcoming weekends, candidates & team members from our parish, ultreyas and other events. We ask you to PLEASE take a few moments to e-mail us at: [email protected] or call us at 623-412-9415 w/your name, address, phone & email. You can also drop them off at the office. THANKS! Your Parish Reps, George & Cecelia Dusold
Dear St. Helenians,
I send greetings from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California. I am now used to the hectic timetable of the school. We are trying to challenge the professors with hard questions in class, but I admit they know how
to revenge by keeping us busy with a lot of readings and papers to prepare and present on a weekly basis. Thank God, all is fine so far.
I want to use this opportunity to thank you, St. Helenians, for being with me all this time. I thank you for coming in to help when you heard that I was in need. Many of you have kept in touch with me by writing cards, sending greetings, gifts, recipes, and above all, praying for me. Through such communications you, indeed, shed a light of friendship and encouragement, you dispelled the darkness of my doubts and worries, and you have created peace in my mind that I can concentrate on my studies. I sincerely thank you for everything. I am not yet assigned to a Parish. I am living in the Jesuit apartment, just two blocks from the University. Once again, thanks for your continued friendship; hope to meet with you in December, 2012. Solomon Bandiho

During the months of June through August, our volunteers have made 397 home visits serving 1,403 people. We have delivered 1,860 bags of food. This represents a 75% increase in home visits and a 45% increase in food delivered for the same period last summer.
Unfortunately, our shelves are bare and we need your assistance to get us through to the November Food Drive. We need the items listed on the table on the left.
Thank you for your support and generosity. God Bless.
