cut!

Hear our humble prayer, O God,

for our friends the animals,

especially for animals who are suffering;

for animals that are overworked, underfed

and cruelly treated;

for all wistful creatures in captivity

that beat their wings against bars;

for any that are hunted or lost or deserted

or frightened or hungry;

for all that must be put death.

We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,

and for those who deal with them

we ask a heart of compassion

and gentle hands and kindly words.

Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,

and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

LECTOR ? Members of our parish community proclaim

the first and second readings and the Prayers of the

Faithful at our Masses. We are now recruiting new

members for this ministry! Training consists of three

two-hour sessions where fundamentals are covered

and feedback and support are provided. Once you

have completed training, you can let Mary Heider

know which Mass time(s) you prefer, and you will be

scheduled approximately once a month or so, depend-

ing on the number of lectors available at each Mass.

If you have any questions, please call Mary in

the parish office, 254-6233. Training will begin in

mid-October. Thank you for your prayerful consider-

ation of this ministry!

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

LIVING SALT & LIGHT TOM GORMAN

Tom would like the rest of us to know that the main purpose of the Saint Vincent de Paul organization is to grow in faith through service to Christ’s poor. Indeed, the Vincentian charism stresses three pillars: spirituali-ty, service, friendship.

“We strive to see Christ in the faces of the people we help,” he com-ments, “and this keeps us closely connected with Jesus in a very practical way. At the end of your earthly days you are not going to be told you helped too many people, right?!”

Of course, he continues, at times this kind of ministry can be frustrat-ing because people don’t always respond in the manner you’d like. There is

a healthy tension, he believes, between recognizing that we want to be good stewards with the re-sources we have, and the knowledge that from time to time folks will misuse and abuse what can be offered. “We can always find a reason to say no to someone, but should we? Many of the people we help made a dumb decision and dug a hole for themselves. So we try to make good judgements as to how to help and in what amount, but still not be judgmental.” This is one reason prayer and reflection is important, he says, as it reminds you that whatever you accomplish to help someone else is worth it to the person who is desperate and needs a helping hand. Ministry isn’t about us, and what we want to have happen! And overwhelmingly, he stresses, people are grateful, appreciative, and very friendly. For thirty-six years this ministry has grounded and formed him into a better man, and he believes he has received far more from it than he has given in return.

In addition to the parish ministry, St. Helen’s SVDP members volunteer in the “Special Works” of the Dayton District Council, such as the shelters, pantry, and the Urban Outreach Center. For the last several months the Council has offered the weekly “Getting Ahead” program for local clients at St. Helen’s in the St. Julie Center. Also, the larger Dayton-area district offers training sessions to give new people the opportunity to understand the Vincentian charism, and to meet with people from all over the archdiocese.

Tom asserts that the St Helen SVDP Conference is a wonderful group of friendly, hard-working, selfless, and inspired Christians, moved by the Spirit to answer Christ’s call to serve the poor. They al-ways welcome new members to attend their semi-monthly Wednesday evening meetings, and in fact, they would be delighted to have you stop by!

Bible Study on the Book of Acts - Acts is the

story of how a few Christians empowered by the Holy

brought the kingdom of God to a broken world and the

love of God to the hearts of men. Classes begin October
