THE PURPOSE OF GREAT LENT ndash THE GREAT FAST + Fr Nicholas V Gamvas

The purpose of Great Lent is to prepare the faithful to enter into the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus The totality of the Orthodox Christian centers around the Resurrection of Christ Great Lent is intended to be a workshop where the character of the believer is spiritually uplifted and strengthened where onersquos life is rededicated to the principles and ideals of the Holy Gospel where fasting and prayer culminate in deep conviction of life where apathy and disinterest turn into vigorous activities of faith and good works Lent is not for the sake of Lent itself as fasting is not for the sake of fasting However but rather these are means by which and for which the individual believer prepares to reach for accept and attain the calling of the Savior Therefore the significance of Great Lent is highly appraised not only by the monks who gradually increased the length of time of the Lent but also by the lay people themselves The Orthodox lenten rules are the monastic rules These rules exist not as a Pharisaic law ldquoburdens grievous to be bornerdquo Luke 1146 but as an ideal to be striven for not as an end in themselves but as a means to the purification of heart the enlightening of mind the liberation of soul and body from sin and the spiritual perfection crowned in the virtue of love towards God and man In Orthodox Christianity asceticism is not exclusively for the professional religious but for each lay person as well according to their strength As such Great Lent is a sacred Institute of the Church to serve the individual believer in participating as a member of the Mystical Body of Christ It provides each person an annual opportunity for self-examination and improving the standards of faith and morals in our Christian life The deep intent of the believer during Great Lent is encapsulated in the words of Saint Paul forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 313-14) Through spending more time than usual in prayer and meditation on the Holy Scripture and the Holy Traditions of the Church the believer in Christ becomes through the grace of God more godlike = theosos The attitude towards this period is very positive it is not so much a period of repentance but as an attempt to recapture our true state as it was for Adam and Eve before the fall - to live pure lives Great Lent or the Great Fast (Greek Μεγά λη Τεσσάράκοστη or Μεγά λη Νηστεί ά meaning Great 40 Days and Great Fast respectively) is the most important fasting season in the church year in the Eastern Orthodox Church which prepares Christians for the greatest feast of the church year Pascha Great Lent officially begins on Clean Monday seven weeks before Pascha and runs for 40 contiguous days concluding with the Presanctified Liturgy on Friday of the Sixth Week The next day is called Lazarus Saturday the day before Palm Sunday Fasting continues throughout the following week known as Passion Week or Holy Week and does not end until after the Paschal Vigil early in the morning of Pascha (Easter Sunday) Observance of Great Lent is characterized by fasting and abstinence from certain foods intensified private and public prayer self-examination confession personal improvement repentance and restitution for sins committed and almsgiving


The foods abstained from are meat fish eggs and dairy products wine and oil According to some traditions only olive oil is abstained from in others all vegetable oils While wine and oil are permitted on Saturdays Sundays and a few feast days and fish is permitted on Palm Sunday as well as the Annunciation of the Feastday when it falls before Palm Sunday and caviar (fish roe) is permitted on Lazarus Saturday meat and dairy are prohibited entirely until the fast is broken on Pascha Besides the additional liturgical celebrations Orthodox Christians are expected to pay closer attention to and increase their private prayer According to Orthodox theology when asceticism is increased prayer must be increased also The Church Fathers have referred to fasting without prayer as the fast of the demons since the demons do not eat according to their incorporeal nature but neither do they pray

Theme of Lenten Joy A difference between the Eastern and Western observances is that while in the West the chanting of Alleluia ceases during Lent in the East its use is increased This is because for Orthodox Christians fasting is joyous (Matthew 616) and the sense of unworthiness must always be tempered with hope in Gods forgiveness In fact days which follow the Lenten pattern of services are referred to as days with Alleluia This theme of Lenten Joy is also found in many of the hymns of the Triodion such as the stichera which begin with the words The Lenten Spring has dawned (Vespers Aposticha Wednesday of Cheesefare Week) and Now is the season of repentance let us begin it joyfully O brethren (Matins Second Canon Ode 8 Monday of Cheesefare Week) The making of prostrations during the services increases as well The one prayer that typifies the Lenten services is the Prayer of Saint Ephrem which is said at each service on weekdays accompanied by full prostrations One translation of it reads O Lord and master of my life Take away a spirit of idleness despondency ambition and idle-talking give me not But rather a spirit of chastity humble-mindedness patience and charity bestow upon me Thy servant Yea my king and Lord grant me to see my own failings and refrain from judging others For blessed art Thou unto ages of ages Amen The public reading of Scripture is increased during Great Lent The Psalter (Book of Psalms) which is normally read through once a week is read through twice each week for the six weeks prior to Holy Week Readings from the Old Testament are also increased with the Books of Genesis Proverbs and Isaiah being read through almost in their entirety at the Sixth Hour and Vespers (during Cheesefare Week the readings at these services are taken from Joel and Zechariah while during Holy Week they are from Exodus Ezekiel and Job) Uniquely on weekdays of Great Lent there is no public reading of the Epistles or Gospels This is because the readings are particular to the Divine Liturgy which is not celebrated on weekdays of Great Lent exception being the Annunciation of the Theotokos There are however Epistles and Gospels appointed for each Saturday and Sunday

By Saint Theodore Studite Brethren in the Lord the Annunciation is here and it is the first of the Feasts of the Lord and we should not simply celebrate as most do but with understanding and with reverence for the mystery What is the mystery That the Son of God becomes son of man using the holy Virgin as the means dwelling in her and from her fashioning for Himself a temple and becoming perfect man Why so ldquoThat he might ransom those under the lawrdquo as it is written ldquoand that we might receive sonshiprdquo [Gal 45] that we may no longer be slaves but free no longer subject to the passions but free of passions no longer friends of the world but friends of God no longer walking according to the flesh but according to the spirit ldquoThose who walk according to the flesh think the things of the flesh those who walk according to the spirit the things of the spirit for the thought of the flesh is death but the thought of the spirit life and peace And so the thought of the flesh is hostile to God for it is not subject to the law of God Indeed it cannot be Those who are in the flesh cannot please Godrdquo [Rom 85-8] In brief this is the power of the mystery and this is why we should celebrate spiritually and behave spiritually with holiness and justice with love with gentleness with peace ldquowith forbearance with goodness with the Holy Spiritrdquo [2 Cor 66] so that as far as we ourselves are concerned we do not render the dispensation of our Lord Jesus Christ empty and ineffectual Not only that but we should both pray and grieve for the world Why so Because the Son of God came to save the world and the world rejects Him Tribes and languages reject Him the barbarian nations reject Him those who have had his holy name invoked upon them reject Him some through abandoning the faith others through their evil lives What should He have done and did not do Being God He became man ldquoHe humbled Himself becoming obedient unto death the death of the crossrdquo [Phil 28] he gave us His body to eat and His blood to drink He allowed us to call him Father Brother Head Teacher Bridegroom Fellow-heir and all the other titles which there is no time to mention now And still He is rejected and still He bears it ldquoForrdquo He says I have not come to judge the world but to save the worldrdquo [John 1247] What then is there to say brethren That the genuine disciples are grieved by the rejections of their fellow disciples thus showing love both for the teacher and for the disciples So too genuine servants suffer in the same way from the desertions of their fellow-servants This is why the great Apostle orders that ldquowe should offer supplications prayers entreaties thanksgivings on behalf of all mankind for kings and for all in high positionsrdquo [1 Tim 21-2] and elsewhere he says this on the subject ldquoI speak the truth in Christ I do not lie my conscience bears witness with me in the Holy Spirit that I have a great grief and unceasing anguish in my heart for I have prayed that I might be anathema to Christ for the sake of my brethren my kinsmen according to the fleshrdquo [Rom 91-3] You see the power of love You see the height of friendship Moses shows it too when he says to God ldquoIf you will forgive them their sin forgive if not wipe me out of the book which you have writtenrdquo [Exodus 3232] So we too as genuine and not counterfeit disciples should not only look to what concerns ourselves but we should grieve and pray for our brothers and for the whole world for by so doing what is pleasing to the Lord we shall become inheritors of eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord to whom be the glory and the might with the Father and the Holy Spirit now and forever and to the ages of ages Amen

A GREEK HOLIDAY AND A RELIGIOUS FEASTDAY

Greek Independence Day a national holiday celebrated annually in Greece on March 25 commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821 It coincides with the Greek Orthodox Churchrsquos celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1453 The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25 1821 when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese The cry ldquoFreedom or deathrdquo became the motto of the revolution The Greeks experienced early successes on the battlefield including the capture of Athens in June 1822 but infighting ensued By 1827 Athens and most of the Greek isles had been recaptured by the Turks Just as the revolution appeared to be on the verge of failure Great Britain France and Russia intervened in the conflict The Greek struggle had elicited strong sympathy in Europe and many leading intellectuals had promoted the Greek cause including the English poet Lord Byron At the naval Battle of Navarino the combined British French and Russian forces destroyed an Ottoman-Egyptian fleet The revolution ended in 1829 when the Treaty of Edirne established an independent Greek state The Celebration of the Greek Revolution of 1821 (Greek Εορτασμο ς της Ελληνικη ς Επανα στασης του 1821 Eortasmoacutes tis Ellinikiacutes Epanaacutestasis tou 1821) also known as Independence Day is a national holiday in Greece Cyprus as well as in the Greek diaspora celebrated on March 25 It commemorates the start of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire and the formation of an independent Greek state which coincides with the Greek Orthodox Feast of the Annunciation Greek Independence Day is celebrated in many cities outside of Greece with large Greek diaspora communities In the United States annual parades are held in cities like Boston Chicago and New York An annual reception at the White House hosted by the President of the United States attend-ed by many prominent Greek Americans has also been held since the tradition was first started by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 A Presidential proclamation is also issued celebrating the day Every year on March 25 the country of Greece celebrates Greek Independence Day Like elsewhere around the world the day is marked with national pride happiness and is a special holiday to the people of Hellas Hence the saying on this special day

The Evzone Uniforms The division was formed in 1868 and its soldiers called Evzones wear traditional costumes and perform carefully choreographed displays at changing-of-the-guard ceremonies Evzones uniforms are not just for decoration ndash they represent a lot more According to the chief tailor of the Presidential Guard Vangelis Lazos every detail of the costume represents the significant battles fought throughout Greeces modern history and the uniform is a symbol of the countrys national pride The formal version of the uniform is white and worn on Sundays and at official occasions with a doulama or tunic worn at other times ndash khaki in summer and navy blue in winter The top of the costume features a waistcoat of intricate black embroidery on white cloth On the bottom the Evzones wear a white skirt made of 30 meters of fabric which must feature 400 pleats which represent the 400 years during which Greece was ruled by other countries The red on the Evzones hats symbolizes the blood that was shed by the soldiers Greek ancestors who struggled for freedom While black symbolizes their remembrance and the tassel represents the Greek people with the knot showing that Greek people will unite when necessary

Evzones Training for slow motion New recruits must be trained for six months before they can perform the unique slow movements distinctive of the Evzones If they are to participate in ceremonies for foreign leaders they receive special separate training After six months of training Evzones must be vigilant when on duty but should appear indifferent to any surrounding stimuli ndash no expressions or sudden movements are permitted Every Sunday morning at 1100 local time soldiers put on their costumes and march to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a changing of the guard ndash one of Athens biggest tourist attractions

A Eastern Orthodoxy treats the text as simultaneously describing contemporaneous events (events occurring at the same time) and as prophecy of events to come for which the contemporaneous events were a form of foreshadow It rejects attempts to determine before the fact if the events of Revelation are occurring by mapping them onto present-day events taking to heart the Scriptural warning against those who proclaim He is here prematurely Instead the book is seen as a warning to be spiritually and morally ready for the end times whenever they may come (as a thief in the night) but they will come at the time of Gods choosing not something that can be precipitated nor trivially deduced by mortals Book of Revelation is the only book of the New Testament that is not read during services by the Orthodox Churches and Byzantine Rite

A The Kingdom of God is what Christ has brought to the world The Gospel is full of Christrsquos insistence that the Kingdom of God is given to us by His coming It is a Kingdom not of this world but of God a Kingdom of everlasting life in union with God the Trinity Thus we define the Kingdom of God as life in and with God The Orthodox believe that this life is communicated to people in the Church through Christ and the Holy Spirit It is a life where people worship and obey God and do His will by the presence and power of His Spirit The Church Fathers have even defined the Kingdom of God as life in the Holy Spirit which is the same definition given by Orthodox to the Christian Church itself What we know in the Church in the Holy Spirit of communion with God the Father through Jesus Christ remains still a mystery The Kingdom is really here but in symbol and sacrament

At the end of the ages this Kingdom will come with observation with power and glory when Christ will be re-vealed and God will be ldquoall in allrdquo Thus because we Orthodox believe that the Kingdom is already given to those who believe and that the righteous who have fallen asleep have even a greater access to this Kingdom than we have on earth because of our mixture with the evil of this age we insist that ldquoheavenrdquo is not a locata-ble place within the space of our created universe but a spiritual divine condition of existence which will fill the universe at the end of time It is ldquoeternal liferdquo already revealed to the saints in death and to the holy peo-ple of God within the sacramental life of the Christian Church Q On Lenten Fasting Why do we fast and from what do we fast before Pascha ~ Patrick Ryan

A We fast before the Feast of Feasts the Resurrection of Christ to prepare ourselves for the celebration of Our Lordrsquos eternal victory over sin corruption and death and in anticipation of our own resurrection Hence Great Lent is a time of preparation during which we focus on and anticipate the resurrection of Our Savior by fasting prayer and almsgiving When we fast we ldquoshift our focusrdquo from ourselves to God and others spend-ing less time worrying about what to eat when to eat how much to eat and so on in order to use our time in increased prayer and caring for the poor We learn through fasting that we indeed can gain control over those things that we too often allow to control usmdashand for many people food is a controlling factor [We live in the only society in which an entire TV network is devoted to food] While fasting from food however we are also challenged to fast from sin from gossip from jealousy from anger and from those other things which while well within our control we all too often allow to control us Further just as we would refrain from eating a lot before going to an expensive restaurant for dinnermdashif we ldquoruin our appetiterdquo we will hardly enjoy our dinnermdash so too we fast before Holy Pascha in order to more fully feast and celebrate on the Feast itself

During the Great Fastmdashand all Lenten seasonsmdashwe are called upon to refrain from meat dairy fish wine and olive oil At the same time we are challenged within this framework to fast to the best of our ability and to do so consistently If we must modify the extent to which we fast within this framework it is of course possible but in every instance our fasting should be consistent and regular for Christ does not see fasting as an option but as a ldquomustrdquo In the Gospel of Saint Matthew Our Lord says ldquoWHEN you fast do not be like the hypocritesrdquo not ldquoIF you fastrdquo or ldquoIF YOU CHOOSE to fastrdquo

By the grace of God we have reached another Lenten season This is the time of year that we are supposed to take a good look into ourselves and make the changes that are necessary for us to draw closer to the Lord and to celebrate His life saving Passion and glorious Resurrection It is up to us to make time for the extra bible readings which instruct us not only about the season that we are in but our life in general The Church provides the extra services to give us the strength to accomplish this journey It is with great effort that we make this journey We are told in the Holy Scriptures to Pray unceasingly As I was reading I came across an article on prayer that I would like to share with you This was taken from Being An Orthodox Christian

The life of a true follower of Christ is a life of prayer Realizing as you do that you are dependent upon God for your ultimate happiness you must keep constant contact with Him Since God is your Creator and Redeemer it stands to reason that you must keep close to Him As a loving Father and Provider that He is you must be near Him As a dependent child that you are of the Heavenly Father it is only natural that you should maintain constant communion with Him And it is in prayer that this communion and blessed intercourse is effected

To pray to God is to acknowledge Him as your Supreme God It is to have His grace with you strengthening and uplifting you out of the base concerns of life Prayer elevates you Though you are on earth in body in mind you are able to ascend to the foot of the Heavenly Throne and there converse with Him whom the angles never cease to glorify and praise He imparts to you power and strength to overcome the difficulties of your everyday life to meet with adversities patiently and to reach safely to the end of your earthly life It goes without saying that not to pray is to separate yourself from God and to invite misery and sorrow eternal It is impossible to be a worthy child of God if you are not in the habit of praying Not to pray is not to be a Christian

Scripture tells us Pray Unceasingly That is to say our whole life should be one long prayer It should be a prayerful life Our thoughts should ascent to God often and not only should frequently meditate on His love and mercy Whether we work study eat or sleep we should be mindful of God All of our activities should be consecrated to His glory

Our prayer should contain glorification thanksgiving and petition All three are necessary to a well balanced prayer In prayer we glorify God we thank Him and we beseech Him for certain needs For prayer to be true it must be done in humility with a sense of our sinfulness and of Gods Infinity as well as with fervent faith that He listens to us Our blessed Lord gives the assurance Ask and it shall be given seek and you shall find knock and it shall be opened to you

With Great Lent starting now is the perfect time to increase our prayer and Bible study time and take advantage of the liturgical services for our spiritual growth
