January 4, 2015 “We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” Matthew 2: 2

The Epiphany of the Lord The Epiphany of the Lord extends the glow of Christmas. This is the feast of the coming of the Son of God for all nations. The visit of the magi is a kind of prophetical condensation of what will happen in the life of Jesus and in the early Church. From his birth, Jesus appears as the new Moses. The magi, who represent the pagans, set off to look for the Messiah and, having found Jesus, they prostrate themselves before him while the Jewish religious leaders do not bother to seek out and pay homage to the new born Messiah. In this way, Matthew, at the beginning of his Gospel, shows the drama of the Jews’ ignoring Jesus and the access of the more receptive pagans to the kingdom of God. To each one of us, God gives his light in many ways. For us, the guiding star is the Gospel which is our light. It allows us to meet the living God Whom Jesus helps us know.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Je-rusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

MASS FOR OUR PARISH BY BISHOP O HARA Bishop John O'Hara will celebrate a trilingual Mass on the feast of the Baptism of our Lord, Sunday January 11 at 11:30 AM. The Span-ish Mass at 10 AM and the French Mass at 1 00 PM will be cancelled, so that all parishion-ers can attend the 11 30 AM Mass. Bishop O’Hara would like to meet the people of St. Gregory’s after the Mass, and we urge everyone to attend this special service and meet the Bishop who has assured Msgr. Crimmins that no decision has been made regarding the future of our parish. NOVENA TO THE PATRON SAINT OF THE DOMINCAN REPUBLIC A Novena to Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, patron saint of the Dominican Republic, will begin on Thursday, January 8, in the church. The exact time will be announced at all the Masses. This feast is celebrated every year honoring the Virgin Mother of God as the pro-tector of the people of the Dominican Repub-lic. All are invited to attend the novena which will be concluded with a Mass. YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has declared Year of Consecrated Life beginning on the first Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014 and closing on February 2, 2016, on the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The main purpose of the year will be to evangelize for vocations to the consecrated life and the re-sponse of religious to “awaken the world” to the prophetic witness to the poor and those in need. BELATED BIRTHDAY GREETINGS FOR POPE FRANCIS Pope Francis celebrated his 78th birthday on Dec. 17th with a donation of chicken to soup kitchens and sleeping bags to the homeless in Rome. He was feted by people bearing sunflowers, birthday cards, and a “flash mob” of people doing the tango just outside St. Peter’s Square. We at St. Gregory’s may be a little late and perhaps not quite so athletic, but we extend our most hearty and heartfelt birthday greetings and wish a Blessed New Year to our Pope Francis!
