HAD JESUS BEEN BORN IN SOUTH LOUISIANA, THE WISEMEN FROM THE EAST WOULD HAVE BROUGHT HIM KINGCAKES AND MARDI GRAS BEADS. This weekend brings about a lot of shifts in our focus both with our liturgical lives and with our social lives. This weekend we celebrate two major feasts: The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday and then His Baptism the Monday after. Usually the Baptism is celebrated the following weekend but because of the way Epiphany falls on January 8, the Feast of the Baptism was transferred to Monday. Then right after that, we return to Ordi-nary Time and the liturgical color of green, until March when Lent arrives. The Feast of The Epiphany brings the revelation of God in His Son Jesus to the rest of the world. The wise men represent humanity that exists outside of Israel. In a sense, at Epiphany, God revealed that His Son was sent not only for the salvation of the Jewish people but for all of the human race. This is a big feast for us non-Israelites. Following this, we reflect on the Baptism of Jesus, where hearing the voice of the Father calls us to re-spond to his revelation. The Gospel invites us to “listen to His Son.” Through our own baptisms, the origi-nal sin that we inherited from our ancestors was removed from our lives and our souls were opened to the presence of God. There is therefore no reason why we cannot listen to the voice of His Son, unless we chose to close ourselves off. On a personal note, the weekend of the Epiphany has always been a special day for me as I was baptized on Epiphany Sunday eons ago. And no… there was no voice coming down from heaven telling my par-ents, relatives, and godparents ʺthis is my beloved Son, listen to him.ʺ I think it was more of the priest tell-ing my parents, ʺteach your son when he grows up to listen to you…ʺ But seriously, I always celebrate the anniversary of my Baptism because on this day I was claimed and redeemed for God and His Kingdom. Do you remember your baptismal day? Remember, that is the day you became a Christian.
********** PRIESTS’ CONVOCATION: From January 16-19, all the active priests of our diocese will be gathering for four days to finalize the results of the different commissions of our strategic planning. It is the hope of everyone that everything will be finalized and approved by all the priests at this convocation. Please say a prayer for us. Because of the importance of this matter for all priests, the Bishop has asked that regular daily masses all throughout the Diocese be suspended during these four days, except at the two Cathedrals and when there is a funeral mass to be celebrated. ST. GENEVIEVE PARISH will be suspending its daily masses (including the Nursing Home mass) from Tuesday, January 17 to Thursday, January 19. I ASK THAT ALL OF OUR DAILY MASS GOERS who truly want to come to daily mass, go to St. Joseph Co-Cathedral on those three days. MASSES will be offered on the Monday and will resume on the Friday. NO COMMUNION SERVICES will be held at the Church because we will take these days as an opportune time to improve our Church Sound System. Equipment will be brought inside the church and therefore, we will be fully closing it to avoid work hazards. ADORATION that Thursday will remain as scheduled. I APOLOGIZE for the inconvenience!
Fr. Eric
