Why do people buy lottery tickets or stand in line to purchase the $125 NYS Millennium Millions, or send in the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes or enter contests or raffles? Why do people play the slots or gamble at the casinos? Maybe, because somehow we can’t help thinking, “Wouldn’t it be great if this time I won!” Now wouldn’t it be great — — — if instead of wishing for things like money, success or fame we just as earnestly wished with all our hearts and souls and minds and strength that we could love the Lord our God and our neighbor as ourselves? For most of us, loving God with our hearts, our emotions and our feelings was a natural starting point for our faith. Through the years we began to convince ourselves that as our faith matures, the intensity of our ‘first love/faith’ wanes or cools down. Emotion-filled faith is a sign that our faith is alive, and filled with genuine love. When we love God with our whole soul, we integrate our faith into all of our being. One cannot separate your ‘religious life’ from the rest of your life if the love of the Lord has touched your soul. To love with all our soul forces us out of our selves and into the world and all its people. Love then moves beyond race and gender, nationality and economic status. We are forced to look at the injustices of oppression and even to the creatures of God’s creation as they struggle against pollution, abuse and exploitation by humanity. When our mind is softened by our hearts and sharpened by our souls, it becomes a powerful tool for serving Christ in this world. A mind centered in Christ does not use its energies thinking up schemes to get ahead or minimizing risks. A mind devoted to Christ looks for ways to shape what it has been given into the redeeming love for this world. Our real strength comes from the combined force of our heart, mind and spirit. Our physical body is so important that Jesus Christ, Son of God, took on that same body so as to bear witness to God’s love. If we are to love the Lord our God with all our strength, then we need to treat our bodies with respect. Diet, good health and fitness are not just good for you, they are important for demonstrating God’s presence in our lives. When we abuse our bodies through self-indulging in poor diet, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, immoral behavior and becoming ripe ’couch potatoes’, we limit our strength and deplete our energies for doing God’s will and work. Wouldn’t it be great if we all loved the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength? And wouldn’t it be great if we had Catholics who could love God with all four of these characteristics? Wouldn’t it be great if we were all as outstanding as we believe ourselves to be? We need to remember that we love God as we leave the parking lot after Mass, as we live with and appreciate our families, friends and our work place. We need to remember to use these gifts this week when we exercise our right to vote this week.

Last weeks bulletin cover brought great memories to me. During the past year I had funerals for so many families and friends. I buried an aunt, Florence, two cousins, Da-vid & Ray. So many wonderful Parishioners, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Holy Name Members, Ladies Guild Members, Parish Workers, Daily Mass people, Senior Citizens, and so many others. Every single one was unique and special. It is so important to keep their faith, memories and hope alive. We keep telling stories of their love. It is sobering to know that all of us will be on their list some day. We are all put here on earth for a purpose. It is always important to pass our memories. Funerals have changed. We no longer have 3 day wakes in the home. We very rarely go to graveside. More and more people choose cremation. Many even have no fu-neral or memorial. The Church always wants us to celebrate Life - and our belief in a resurrection. We need wakes to tell each other stories. We need Mass to remember our faith in the Res-urrection and we need the Eucharist to help us remem-ber. The Church Triumphant, the Church Suffering and the Church Militant. The funeral is a final tribute to our loved ones - but it al-ways helps us. We all need to grieve. We all need the answers only faith provides - Jesus leads us home. We will see our loved ones again. We pray in the creed - I believe in the Resurrection of the Dead. Our loved ones watch over us, pray for us and love us. We always need to pray for them. Come to our special Mass Nov. 19 - Tell everyone - I in-vite everyone. It is so great to be part of this family of faith. God bless you & your family. Love & Prayers,

Working with young folks is a very joy-filled thing. We are very fortunate to so... their spirited energy and enthusi-asm for life is quite contagious. In the

younger grades it is not unusual to see them literally skip-ping in & out of class. They know that they are welcomed and loved here, and down deep inside, they want to learn more about God. They want to get closer to God. Now they may not have quite the spring in their steps as they enter & exit the parish hall in the older grades, but that’s ok; we are very happy that they are here growing in their faith. The older students do enjoy the amity of their friends, and they too welcome a chance to grow in their relationships with God. They appreciate that our volunteer teachers are here for them. We know that Jesus was all about relation-ships. So it is with us. Since many of our older students really don’t care how much you know till they know how much you care, we do try our best to connect with our young disciples, so that they may be open to what our teachers have to offer. We also encourage the free flow of questions and feedback from our students. One of our 10th grade teachers asked for some of this honest feedback from her students. Here it is* *When asking teens about their faith, many felt they were good Catholics because they wear a Catholic medal, and try to be nice to other people, even if people are different. Many go to Church every Sunday! *Many teens felt they would develop their faith by going to Church more and increasing their prayer time. A few felt they just needed to wait for Confirmation. (Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that Faith Formation is a lifelong journey.) *Most teens felt they needed to embrace their Faith now to help them in life or they might lose their opportunity & risk non-belief or a decline in their Faith in the future. *When asked if friends, school mates, or others would know they are Catholic, most said yes; a few said maybe. One said no because his family did not have any crucifix, stat-ues or even a Bible in the home. *All the teens seem eager to learn more about Faith and their Catholic Religion. (well alright then!)

We always welcome feedback from our families involved in home-schooling. In particular, we ask for feedback re: our choice of texts and curriculums. We like the resources we provide for you, but we are open to suggestions for change & improvement. Please let us know. We really appreciate the summary statements given to us by the parents and students doing the home-schooling. Clearly, our parents are very dedicated to providing the gift of our Faith to their children. Awesome! Here is a reflection from Sarah’s mom: “This year home-schooling my children in Religion has been very educational for them as well as myself. I find myself brushing up on many topics about the church, the saints, prayer, beliefs, etc. My nine year old made her 1st Communion and it is great to see her really understand our religious faith. My 12 year old has been really trying to ap-ply what we learned in everyday affairs. We now volunteer at Friends of the Night People to help serve the less fortu-nate. The kids did great. They are truly understanding what is to love one another; be kind and giving to others. I feel very proud to be able to teach & help them.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER Effective November 1, 2012 because of the dire shortage of priests (and our parish priests are not as young as they used to be), we will no longer have the 11:30am Mass on the weekdays that we have a funeral. If we have a funeral on a Saturday morning, we will not have the 8am Mass. Please call the Rectory before you come to Mass to be sure we don’t have a funeral scheduled. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.


PRAYER CLOTHS

AVAILABLE

What is a prayer cloth? In Acts 19:11-12, it speaks of how cloths were touched by Peter and Paul and taken back to the sick who were often cured of their ills. It says that “So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul that when face cloths or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.” Prayer cloths are sacramental. As in the case of all sacramentals, their power comes not from the sign (CLOTH) itself, but by means of the Church’s official prayer of blessing, a power flowing from the re-demptive act of Jesus, elicited by the Church’s interces-sion. Sacramental like prayer cloths are to be used as “focus points” funneling one’s faith and devotion of the person using the sacramental. These blessed cloths can be given to those persons in need of God’s healing grac-es, asking the Blessed Mother’s intercession for both physical and/or emotional well being.

Inquiries for these sacramental and blessed prayer cloths can be made at St. Gabriel’s Gift Shoppe in the Church where a request sheet can be completed and subse-quent contact from a member of the Prayer Cloth Ministry will occur.

SENIOR NEWS St. Gabriel’s Seniors Thanksgiving

Luncheon will be held on Monday, November 12th at the Fr. Justin Knights on Columbus - 2735 Union Rd. - Cheektowaga, NY 14225. Luncheon starts at 11am and lunch will be served at 12pm. Boy Scout Troop 618 is collecting items for the Goodwill. If you have any clothing, shoes, accessories, along with computers, toys, bicycles or sporting goods you would like to donate, please bring them to the Parish Hall during our weekly meetings on Thursday evenings at 7 - 8:30pm. Items can also be taken to the Goodwill next to Tops at French and Transit Rd). Make sure you ask for a “Boy Scout Receipt” and mention Troop 618.

OUR OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Thank you to all who donated the 158 coats to the Coat Drive. The participation in the distribution by 70 - 80 people was appreciated. These two elements made it a successful event. The remainder of the coats were divid-ed between a parishioner who teaches in a very poor Buffalo Public School and a Cleveland Hill school coun-selor for the Clevehill clothes closet that provides help for those who seek help from the school. These two recipi-ents expressed their deepest gratitude for the donations. I told them the help given to them was a result of the generosity of the parishioners. Thank you all so very much.
