Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ,

Many of us are finding ourselves struggling to cope with the changing of our patterns, our habits, and the most unusual change of all being unable to attend masses for the forcible future.

Last time I missed mass I had the flu or some other sickness, but as far as I know mass has never been cancelled for anything other than bad weather in my life time. Although this is a unique and challenging time, it is also a blessed one. It is not a blessing to be unable to attend mass, but it is to realize how much we have been blessed within our community.

Years ago when I was learning about different cultures I was shocked to learn that many communities in the world do not have access to mass every Sunday. I did not realize the privilege I had by having access to it, not just weekly, but even daily if I wanted it! I heard about a community that only see a priest once a year! Meaning, that you only have access to mass, reconciliation and all the other sacraments once a year no mat-ter how badly you want them. This concept was so foreign to me that it made me realize how ungrateful I was for what I had come to accept in my life as normal. Although its uncomfortable, I am excited to have this time to grow in my faith and appreciate what I have been blessed with.

We can survive and will survive, we can grow and will grow from this trail, and we can and will live our faith without constant access to the mass. We were never called to only be mass going Catholics, our faith is tied into everything we do, not confided to a church, so maybe being unable to attend mass is a blessing in disguise to reflect on our own practice of faith and to ask ourselves, in what ways am I a catholic outside of attending mass?

I recently heard an idea that when we encounter suffering of any type we can become bitter and victimize ourselves or we can use the challenge as an opportunity to love as we ought to, saints are the people who chose the later no matter how challenging.

To help aid you in your development of faith below are several links to give you access to online mass and to fantastic resources to help you develop your faith.

Your Brother in Christ,

Mark Berghoff

Diocese of Evansville 75th Anniversary 7th & 8th grade projects

7th project: Our 7th grade class has chosen to run/walk at least 75 miles during Lent and donate $1 for each mile to the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville. We all know that walking is good for your health. According to Harvard Health, regular walking can also help control sweet craving, de-crease your risk of breast cancer, help with joint pain, and improve immune function. The Ronald McDonald House in Louisville helped families from 15 different Indiana counties last year alone. They provide a place to stay for families of children receiving medical treatment in Louisville hospi-tals. They are in the process of expanding to help even more families. To track the miles, you may use the slips printed in the bulletin or in the back of church. If your family of 4 walks a mile together, then this will count as 4 miles. Invite others to participate and improve your health and contribute to a worthy cause during Lent! You may turn in slips and money in stewardship baskets on the week-end or turn them in Wednesday nights during class. 8th grade project: Our 8th grade class has chosen to raise at least $75 dollars to donate to Memo-rial Hospital Foundation to help purchase a new linear accelerator. This new technology will pro-vide more refined and detailed radiation beams to target cancer cells and leave surrounding tissues untouched. This will be a great technology addition to the area and help more patients receive the latest technology close to home. You may turn in money to Wednesday night class or put the mon-ey in the stewardship baskets.

I encourage the faithful to join me in prayer for all affected by this illness and to unite themselves spiritually with the Masses which I and the priests will continue to offer without the presence of a con-gregation. The Provisions of this decree are effective 18 March 2020, all things to the contrary notwithstand-ing. Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for us! Given at Evansville, Indiana 16 March 2020
