FAITH FORMATION The mission of St. Francis Faith Formation is to support and encourage Catholic parents in their vocation of forming their children in the Catholic faith.

PACEM IN TERRIS Today, on the contrary the conviction is widespread that all men are equal in natural dignity; and so, on the doctrinal and

theoretical level, at least, no form of approval is being given to racial discrimination. All this is of supreme significance for the formation of a human society animated by the principles We have mentioned above, for man's awareness of his rights must inevitably lead him to the recognition of his duties. The possession of rights involves the duty of implementing those rights, for they are the expression of a man's personal dignity. And the possession of rights also involves their recognition and respect by other people. When society is formed on a basis of rights and duties, men have an immediate grasp of spiritual and intellectual values, and have no difficulty in understanding what is meant by truth, justice, charity and freedom. They become, moreover, conscious of being members of such a society. And that is not all. Inspired by such principles, they attain to a better knowledge of the true God—a personal God transcending human nature. They recognize that their relationship with God forms the very foundation of their life—the interior life of the spirit, and the life which they live in the society of their fellows. (44-45) Human society can be neither well-ordered nor prosperous without the presence of those who, invested with legal authority, preserve its institutions and do all that is necessary to sponsor actively the interests of all its members. And they derive their authority from God, for, as St. Paul teaches, "there is no power but from God". In his commentary on this passage, St. John Chrysostom writes: "What are you saying? Is every ruler appointed by God? No, that is not what I mean, he says, for I am not now talking about individual rulers, but about authority as such. My contention is that the existence of a ruling authority—the fact that some should command and others obey, and that all things not come about as the result of blind chance—this is a provision of divine wisdom." God has created men social by nature, and a society cannot "hold together unless someone is in command to give effective direction and unity of purpose. Hence every civilized community must have a ruling authority, and this authority, no less than society itself, has its source in nature, and consequently has God for its author." (46) Excerpt of Pope John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris, Provided by Justice & Peace Ministries, Archdiocese of Atlanta

M ost loving God and Father, you created us in your image and

likeness and blew into us the Spirit of life, a portion of your own divine Spirit. In the fullness of time you sent your Son to live among us, to witness to your glory and to redeem us by his sacrifice on the cross. We confess, Father, that all that we have, all that we are able to do is your gift to us. You have blessed us beyond what we could ever deserve. As grateful stewards we return to you, in the service of your divine kingdom, a portion of the time, talents and treasure that we have received in honor of your goodness to us. Lord God, we want to be your good and faithful servants.

RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT At last! The power hinted at and the Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. Try to listen to today's scripture passages with some sense of how electrifying these events must have been to those who lived through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper room. In today's first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues. In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as reported in today's Gospel reading, "Receive the Holy Spirit." Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

PENTECOST SUNDAY SEQUENCE ome, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine!

Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store!

Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not. We have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

IMPORTANT PLANNING DECISIONS: There are 3 things every adult needs to have. 1. A Will: you can now plan your will online at www.cfngalegacy.org. It is a secure and private site. When

finished planning, print your plan and take to an attorney to complete your will. Please remember to include the parish endowment fund or capital campaign in your will. 2. Power of Attorney: This is needed in case of incapacity in order to have someone take care of your daily affairs. 3. Advanced Directives: This is important for your family to know your wishes in medical situations and it gives someone the ability to carry out your wishes. SECOND COLLECTION SCHEDULE FOR JUNE June 14-15 - St. Francis Building Fund June 28-29 - Peter’s Pence

ICYMI: MORE THAN 250 PASTORS COME TO WASHINGTON TO STRESS MORAL URGENCY OF IMMIGRATION REFORM WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Tuesday, more than 250 pastors from 25 states traveled to Washington to meet with their members of Congress, pray for reform and urge Congress on behalf of their congregations to vote on reform this year. “Immigration reform offers the finest opportunity we in the United States have had to put politics aside and do the right thing, for the right reason, at the right time,” said Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, as reported by the Christian Post. Patterson spoke during a press conference that was followed by a worship service and more than 110 Hill meetings with rank-and-file members of Congress, most of them Republican. The day followed 17 press events featuring local pastors in 13 states over 10 days. Join the conversation on Twitter using #Pray4Reform and #VoteOnReform.
