FROM THE RECTOR

Time flies when you’re having fun. Sometimes this phrase is used in a negative way to help you cope with things that aren’t fun and to acknowledge that time soon passes, and we move on to other things. I think that when we refer to time, especially with reference to church and matters of faith, we make things very confusing. If we want to, or are feeling contrary, we can make things a whole lot more complicated! It’s time for a new electoral roll. Each church keeps a record of those who are interested in its activities. It’s like a membership list, but so much more. There’s no commitment required, in terms of time or money, but it does help me and others to keep in touch with you, and it’s also the way that your voice and the voice of our group gets heard in the Diocese of Lincoln. Please get in touch with me, or someone in your church who can tell you more. Every six years the old roll is completely revised so if you were on last years you need to fill in a new form. Perhaps you’ll come along to one of our Annual Meetings to find out more about what’s going on. It’s time to move our mid-morning services a little later to 11am. Please keep an eye on the service rotas as we move the second service as from April I’m taking on a Sunday half an hour later to 11am. This means I can stay a little longer after the 9am services. Although I love taking services, one important part is the dismissal - the sending out. It’s where the name of the service Mass came from - the final words of dismissal. Now, rather than be too literal and send myself to another church, I’d rather stay a while and have a chat over coffee and spend time getting to know you and what might be on your mind. Ash Wednesday fast approaches. We have two services planned for Wednesday the 6th March. The one during the day is without Holy Communion, whilst the one in the evening will have the opportunity to receive communion. All are welcome. It is one of the great symbolic acts along with foot washing on Maundy Thursday, that signals the start and end of Lent. To help us prepare I am running a series of session based on our Archdeacon’s book The Resilient Disciple. They are on the 7th, 14th, 21st 28th March and the 4th April from 10:30am until mid-day in the Casewick Chapel in St Michael and All Angels Church, Uffington. You are all very welcome. Drop me an email if you’re planning on coming, or just turn up on the day. You don’t need to prepare and no prior knowledge is needed. I hope that you’ll join the electoral roll and perhaps come to one of Annual Meetings. And please join in with the preparation for Lent. Have a look at the rotas as they are published - there are plenty of opportunities to spend time together, or to take time out and consider your part in the great story of our lives together. It might just help us slow down, and there’s a chance that we may have some fun trying new things or even trying to slow down. Even if we feel we’ve not made much progress I think it will be worth it. Fr Aran

The list of those who returned forms will be put up on the church door on 25th March for 14 days for applicants to check, should any corrections / amendments be necessary. IMPORTANT NOTICE: The 2019 Revision of the Electoral Roll

Every six years each parish church is required by law to prepare a new electoral roll and this is happening this year, 2019. You may have already seen posters on the notice boards in the churches about the electoral roll and Annual Parochial Church Meetings. Having a good number on our Electoral Roll helps the church in terms of the way it can represent itself in the composition of the Parochial Church Council (PCC), which leads the life of the local church under the guidance of our new and enthusiastic Rector Fr Aran Beesley and the churchwardens. They, along with the PCC’s of the seven parishes within our group, are working hard towards ensuring that all our church buildings are accessible, in good order, comfortable and welcoming. It also brings an opportunity to widen our network of contacts and keep all in our community informed and involved in what’s happening in the life of our churches. Anyone wishing to apply to go on the new Roll (those already on the old Electoral Roll have to re-apply) must fill out a new form; these are available from all Churchwardens or Fr Aran who will be happy to help you in answering any questions or should you require any help locating and filling out the form.

th Feb In memory of our Jon Boy

20 Feb Happy 80th birthday, Graham Vanessa and family Mark your special date by sponsoring either the Union Jack or St George’s flag, and make a £5 donation to Church funds. Contact David & Gail Genever or Graham Creedy (481084). The Committee of Uffington Village Hall’s next projects are:

Develop the front & back gardens – donations of tools & time very welcome. Thanks to Sheila Croft for helping getting this project off the ground.

Build some storage and display cabinets for the Parish Archives – if you are reading this and are sitting on some of the village’s archives at home, please would you get in touch with Liz Genever ([email protected] or 07790 378349). This way we will know the size and nature of the archives we are dealing with. Parish Councillors Kate Genever and Nick Sheehan are kindly helping with this project - thank you both.

Re-painting the toilets- thank you Phil and Jas for offering to do this. The next meeting of the UVH Committee is 7 March at 7.30pm – why not join our dynamic committee? On Saturday 9 February Philippa Massey gave a most entertaining talk on Law and Order in Stamford, which raised £100 for UVH running costs (Monthly £500). We are grateful to Michael Crowe and the cake bakers for their generous support. Philippa Massey did the honours with the February draw of the 175 Club and the winners were Kim Couzens 142 £20, Jennifer Lillistone 15 £10, Neil Jones 37 £5, Glenys Baldwin 115 £5. The next draw will be held at the talk below. Scarecrows. Scarecrows 2019 is now launched with the theme of Myths, Legends and Fairytales. Jo Coulter is kindly organising the trail and quiz, contact: [email protected]. Our grateful thanks go to Darren Barratt for once again producing the posters. Scarecrows is a lot of fun and a lot of hard work, please offer an hour or two of your time over the weekend of 5 and 6 May 2019. The sooner you offer, the less stress and worry it is for the organisers. In particular, we need someone to organise the tombola. Contact Gail Genever 765005. THANK YOU Uffington continued elsewhere:

THE UFFINGTON WI IS IN DANGER OF CLOSING!

The Uffington WI has been an integral part of your village for over 73 years, having been formed at the end of the war and is now in desperate need of new members and in particular people who are willing to be part of the committee. WI is not all about Jam and Jerusalem, and young blood would be particularly welcome. Uffington WI has always been very active with 35 members currently. Unfortunately most have served on the committee at least once and in some cases even twice, which is why we need new people on the committee. They only meet once a month as a committee and WI meetings are 1° Wednesday in the month. If you would like to be involved why not join us at our forthcoming meeting, on Wednesday 6" February, 7.30pm Or contact either: Gillian Johns - President 01780 756124 email: [email protected] or Pauline Earley - Secretary 01780 480556 email: [email protected].
