Three scientists from Pfizers came to talk to Year 3 children last Wednesday about the importance of handwashing. Using a special glow in the dark hand gel, the children were tasked to wash their hands thoroughly before checking how well they had achieved this in a UV light box. Results were varied, but on the whole we were very impressed with their attention to detail. The scientists continued to bring science to life by asking the children to mix a specific colour of slime that would help eliminate a nasty toxic rashthat was about to break out in the school. They needed no encouragement to get out the aprons and mix some pretty gruesome slime, some of it was even the right colour! The children realised that making medicine is a time consuming and difficult process and were told that to get a medicine from the idea stage to being used by the public can take up to 20 years. A huge thanks goes to Emma Ainsworth, Courtney Roberts and Hashini Gunawardena for taking the time to come and see us and for such a fun afternoon. Heads Corner We were delighted to welcome five Wishford advisors to the school this week and even more thrilled for them to give us a sound pat on the backfor our excellent standards of compliance and delivery of quality education. I always very much appreciate the support we get from Wishford. As ever, our children were extremely polite and friendly to our guests. Thanks to Mr Wyon for organising the delivery of 1000 daffodil bulbs. Mr Andrews, the children and myself have spent many happy hours planting them this week alongside the sports field! PS: Cant see my team losing at Wine & Wisdom

Music Report Another busy week of music ended with Daniel and Tom performing during Friday’s assembly and the school enjoying singing ‘Shotgun’. Year 5 are at the O2 today, performing with Young Voices, and other year groups have been busy during their music lessons this week. Pictures below are of the wonderful children in Year 4 embarking on their second composition task of the school year. Having produced music describing a storm before Christmas, this term they have been composing short pieces of music, each of which represented a dog from the ‘Hairy Maclary’ stories by Lynley Dodd. This idea of using a leitmotif is key to the music dramas of German composer Richard Wagner, which the children have also spent time listening to.

Over the next few weeks they will continue to compose music to accompany an entire ‘Hairy Maclary’ story, with their leitmotifs being central to this task. They will then perform their work which will be evaluated by the rest of the class. After such a great start, their finished compositions will be amazing! We have exams with RockSchool, Trinity and ABRSM over the next couple of weeks together with Twilight Concerts and of course the House Music Competition. More on all of these over the next few weeks.

Down in the Nursery The Children in the Turtle room have been exploring The RSPB Bird Watch this week and enjoyed looking out for the birds and learning their different names. As you can see they have made a fantastic display for their classroom! The children have had lots of fun listening out for birds in the garden and around the school setting as well as participating in lots of craft activities. Some of the children have brought home some bird food they lovingly made at school in the hope of sharing the experience of looking out for birds with their families.

Kung Hei Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year from everyone in Reception. Did you know that this special time, which is also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is China's most important holiday. This years celebrations will begin on Saturday 25 January and last for a total of sixteen days. This is The Year of the Rat, the first of all the zodiac animals that is said to bring wealth and good fortune to people. The festival is traditionally celebrated with dragon and lion dances, exchanging gifts and the most amazing displays of fireworks and lanterns. We are looking forward to learning more about this celebration next week. Follow us on FB, Instagram & Social Media and listen to the fantastic video the children made

Chinese New Year is celebrated with style in the dining hall. Fortune cookies, spring rolls and a variety of chicken and vegetable dishes were on the menu to celebrate the Chinese New Year. What a delicious way to be enlightened about other cultures, and learn about their history and geography.

We’re not very excited about seeing this Pantomime. Oh yes we are!

This week Henry, Lucy, Mrs Harrop and Ms Bernard are all starring in the Ash Village pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’! The panto was written by our super-smashing, Ms Bernard, and is being performed at the village hall by the New Ash Players. It promises to be a smash, especially with our St Faith’s performers, Henry and Lucy as Custard and Cookie the rats! Mrs Harrop and Ms Bernard can also be seen singing and dancing in the chorus, looking unusually sparkly!

St Faith’s Accelerated Reader Progress Party! On Wednesday, sixteen children in the Upper School took part in the first ever St Faith’s Accelerated Reader Progress Party and had a fantastic time. Lined up outside the party room with their

‘Golden Tickets’, they were full of anticipation, and the balloons, music, dancing and yummy snacks didn’t disappoint. “It’s the best day of my life!” said one excited Year 5 pupil. They were all being recognised as having made excellent progress with their reading comprehension since the beginning of the Autumn term. There will be a Progress Party every term and children who have made the biggest jump in their understanding will be selected. As with everything else, it’s all about practice – so keep reading!
