Welcome and Announcements GATHERING FOR WORSHIP O God to Whom all hearts are opened, cleanse the thoughts of my heart. O God to Whom all desires are known, strengthen my desire for You. O God from Whom no secrets are hid, dwell in the very depths of my being, and make me holy. For Your name’s sake. Amen. Music We Praise You, Lord

Heidelberg Catechism Q. 60 — How are you right with God? A — Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments and of never having kept any of them, and, even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without my deserving it at all, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is to accept this gift of God with a believing heart. Rejoice! #33 — Grace (See next p.3)

L — For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that One died for all, and therefore all died. P — And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him Who died for them and was raised again. L — So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! P — All this is from God, Who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: L — That God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. P — We are therefore God’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. L — God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5.14-21 Rejoice! #51 — Jesus, I am Resting (See next p.5)

Prayer (including The Lord’s Prayer) Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Sharing of Thanksgiving ............ Music Offering of Our Gifts (see note on page 9) Our Return to God Our Savior

Prayer of Confession Gracious God and Father, awesome in wisdom, power and glory, abundant in compassion and mercy, take pity on us and forgive our sins. Cleanse us from within. Remove all that blinds us from Your glory. Guard us from insolent attitudes and evil actions. Restore to us the joy of our salvation, and bring peace to our restless hearts. Cause us to reflect the redeeming love, we were purchased with, for the sake of this world You created to be good, until You make all things new, through Jesus. Amen. Silent Prayer Assurance of God’s Pardon: Romans 7.24-8.4 L – Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? P – Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! L – There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. P – For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. L – For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, ALL – Who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

*Tithes and Offerings (4 options) During COVID-19

1. This option works really well: Send a check to the church at the church's street address 4400 St. Elmo Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37409. Please address the envelope to St Elmo Presbyterian Church ATTN: bookkeeping.

This will ensure privacy and security, as these envelopes will be stored securely and dealt with according to our accounting policies ensuring proper handling. The church mailbox has a lock on it.

2. Another option that works really well is to set up a "bill pay" check through your bank's website. Most banks have a bill pay feature where you can log into your account online, find the bill-pay feature, add the church as a payee using the church's street address, and then schedule one-time or recurring payments to be sent to the church. You may need the church phone number for this when you set up the account: 423-821-1424. If it asks for an account #, use: Offering, Deacon’s Fund, General Fund, or something similar.

3. If one of these options does not work well for you, another option for making a donation to the church is online through

the church's Square account. The link to this, found in the FAQ section of the church website, is

https://st-elmo-presbyterian-church.square.site. When you get to this page, remember to scroll down. There are many options. We are glad to receive donations in

this way if it is the best option for you. If mailing a check or bank bill pay work for you, those two methods are preferred for us, for the sake of avoiding processing fees, and due to the advantage of less complicated processing for bookkeeping.

4. Write your check and drop it off at church during the week. But call/text first to make sure we are here.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail Mark Slavovsky at [email protected]. Thank you all for your faithful financial support of the church. Mark

Pray for the Persecuted Church in PAKISTAN (5) PAKISTANI CHRISTIAN COUPLE HOPES TO GET OUT OF PRISON AFTER 7 YEARS

Source: MNNonline.org, June 9, 2020 Christians often get accused of blasphemy in Pakistan, and the story of Shafqat Emmanuel and his wife follows familiar trends. Bruce Allen of FMI says the couple was accused of, “Sending a text message by phone that insulted the Prophet Muhammad and insulted the Quran. These crimes, if convicted, do demand the death penalty in Pakistan. All that, trial, conviction, and sentencing, has already taken place. The couple’s been in prison now for [almost seven] years. They’ve been appealing, and there’s been delay after delay. The appeal was set to be heard on June 3, Just a few days ago. but again, it got delayed to June 22.” The accusations An imam in Pakistan claims to have gotten this text while in prayers, and an attorney claims to have received similar messages while talking with the imam about the issue. Allen says, “So it really does seem like this whole thing is just a set up against this couple. Whoever was perpetrating it knew who the imam was and who he was talking with, and sent the text messages at the proper time to just inflame and incite people against the couple.” The police then entered Shafqat’s house, overpowering him quickly (he is paralyzed from the waist down). The family was arrested, and Shafqat was beaten and threatened until he admitted to sending the text messages. Despite Shafqat’s forced admission, he could not possibly have sent the messages. Allen explains, “He couldn’t. Number one, he’s illiterate. Number two, the text messages weren’t even in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan; they were in English. He doesn’t even know how to speak English, let alone read or write it.” In fact, most Christians in Pakistan can’t read or write, and most work lowly jobs, like sanitation work. Shafqat and his wife have languished in separate prisons since their arrest in 2013. Thankfully, they do have lawyer Saif ul Malook on their side, who also successfully represented Asia Bibi. Allen says Malook lives under a threat of death for even representing clients accused of blasphemy. “He’s willing to put his life on the line to defend those who are unjustly accused. And he has been on the record saying that the evidence against Shafqat is nil.” Pray for Christians in Pakistan The judges themselves may be delaying the case out of fear for what may happen to them if they acquit Shafqat and his wife. Allen encourages Christians to pray that justice will be done for this couple. Pray also that their children will be comforted by Christ. However, he also says, “There are scores of Christians languishing in prisons in Pakistan, who’s been charged and sentenced convicted of blasphemy. The charges are bogus, but things are just set against them. When we pray for this couple, be praying for all of those individuals and their families who wait for them outside the prison.”
