Cultivating the Fruit of Joy

Cultivating a garden or even a flowerbed takes a lot of work and

time. If we are not willing to do the work there will be no fruit.

Last week I wrote about cultivating the fruit of charity in our

lives by saying that we will do what God wants us to do. I

believe this helps with cultivating the fruit of joy in our lives. Joy

is contagious when it is authentic. I once visited a priest at the

point of his death. Despite the fact that he was dying he exuded

great joy, by rejoicing in the work that he had been doing for the

Lord during his life. I remember thinking to myself, “I want this

man’s joy in my life!” And I caught it! Sometimes I even show

it.

The fruit of joy is infectious. Its seeds are contagious. If we had

a choice to be depressed or joyful, what would we choose? I bet

we would choose to be joyful. In fact, we can choose to eat the

fruit of joy and be joyful. The fruit of joy is cultivated in the act

of enjoying doing God’s will in the world despite all the bad

things that might happen to us with the knowledge that as we

joyfully do God’s will in the world a little bit of heaven manifests

itself on earth.

I see this fruit cultivated well in the life of St. Paul the Apostle.

St. Paul tells us to “rejoice in the Lord always.” He does God’s

will by joyful spreading the Good News given to him by Jesus

despite the constant struggles and persecutions. But best of all I

see this fruit cultivated in the life of our Mother Mary when she

sings, “My souls proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit

rejoices in God my maker.” She joyfully does God’s will without

fear by saying at the annunciation of the Lord, “let it be done unto

me according to your will.” This week let’s ask our Lady to

intercede for us in cultivating the joy she perfectly has in her life

so that the seeds of joy might grow and overtake the garden of

another soul.

Cultivando el Fruto de la Alegria Cultivar un jardín o incluso un cantero requiere mucho trabajo y

tiempo. Si no estamos dispuestos a hacer el trabajo, no habrá

fruto. La semana pasada escribí sobre cultivar el fruto de la cari-

dad en nuestras vidas al decir que haremos lo que Dios quiere que

hagamos. Creo que esto ayuda a cultivar el fruto de la alegría en

nuestras vidas. La alegría es contagiosa cuando es auténtica. Una

vez visité a un sacerdote en el momento de su muerte. A pesar de

que estaba muriendo, exudaba gran alegría al regocijarse en el

trabajo que había estado haciendo para el Señor durante su vida.

Recuerdo que pensé: "¡Quiero la alegría de este hombre en mi

vida!" ¡Y lo atrapé! A veces incluso lo muestro El fruto de la alegría es contagioso. Sus semillas son contagiosas.

Si tuviéramos la opción de estar deprimidos o alegres, ¿qué ele-

giríamos? Apuesto a que elegiríamos ser alegres. De hecho,

podemos elegir comer el fruto de la alegría y ser felices. El fruto

del gozo se cultiva en el acto de disfrutar haciendo la voluntad de

Dios en el mundo a pesar de todas las cosas malas que nos

pueden suceder con el conocimiento de que al hacer la voluntad

de Dios con gozo en el mundo, un poco de cielo se manifiesta en

la tierra.

Veo esta fruta cultivada bien en la vida de San Pablo Apóstol.

San Pablo nos dice que nos "regocijemos en el Señor siempre".

Él hace la voluntad de Dios al difundir alegremente las Buenas

Nuevas que Jesús le dio a pesar de las constantes luchas y perse-

cuciones. Pero lo mejor de todo es que veo este fruto cultivado en

la vida de nuestra Madre María cuando canta: "Mi alma proclama

la grandeza del Señor". Mi espíritu se regocija en Dios, mi

creador. "Con alegría hace la voluntad de Dios sin temor al decir

en la anunciación del Señor," hágase en mí según tu voluntad ".

Esta semana solicitemos a nuestra Señora que interceda por

nosotros en el cultivo de la alegría que ella tiene perfectamente en

su vida para que las semillas de la alegría crezcan y alcancen el

jardín de otra alma.
