Weekly Notes

The Rosary: The Joyful Mysteries

Many of you have been reminding me that October is the month of the Rosary. The Rosary is a devotion of the Catholic Church that goes back centuries. Many images of the saints hold the ro-sary in icons and statues because it was part of their devotional life as it is for me and for many of you. The Rosary helps us to meditation on what we call the Pascal Mystery, AKA the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are four sets of mysteries on which to meditation. Today I want to focus on the Joyful Mysteries, which look at the early life of Christ. There are five joyful mysteries: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation and the Finding of Jesus. All of these mysteries find their origin in the first two chapters in Gos-pel of Luke. The Annunciation of Jesus’ conception (Luke 1:26-38), which we celebrate on March 25th, takes place when the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary to tell her she is going to conceive the savior of the world. The Visitation (Luke 1:39-56), which we celebrate May 31st, focuses on the next movement of Jesus in the womb of Mary when she visits her cousin Elizabeth and sings her song called the Magnificat. The Nativity of Jesus (Luke 2:1-20), which we celebrate Christmas Day December 25th, focuses on his birth in Bethlehem and all of the joy that came with that perfect day. The Presentation of Jesus (Luke 2:21-38), which we cele-brate with the Candle mass on February 2nd, focuses on Jesus day of circumcision and the prophecies that came with that day. Fi-nally the Finding of Jesus in the temple(Luke 41-52), which has no specific day of celebration, focuses on Jesus as a 12 year old being left in Jerusalem after the time of the Passover festival. I hope that this October you take some time to pray the Rosary either by your self, with your family, or with some friends. And when you do, pick up a bible and read the readings related to these mysteries so that you might come to dive deeper into the mystery of the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Fr. Jeff

Padre Jeff

Catholic Nonviolent Action for Immigrant Children October 12 at St. Mary’s Cathedral

Catholic organizations have organized a nonviolent campaign to urge an end to the traumatiz-ing abuse of immigrant children and their families by the US government. A powerful mobili-zation of Catholic faith leaders took place in Washington DC on July 18 with a follow-up action in Newark NJ on Sept. 4 with Cardinal Tobin. The next event is scheduled at the border in El Paso TX with Bishop Seitz on Oct. 12.

Catholics from the Portland Archdiocese will gather on October 12 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral 1716 NW Davis in Portland. Come pray the rosary with fellow Catholics in solidarity with immigrant children and their families to demand an end to this violation of human dignity and rights.
