In my conver-sations with stu-dents and faculty,

I am often struck by how muchtechnology is changing the languageof our times. A student wants tobring his ideas “online”; a facultymember offers to “download” herresearch for a new academic pro-gram. Indeed, technology is chang-ing the way we approach life.

It is clear that technology is atool that we, as educators and stu-dents, must master or be leftbehind. Technology offers many

advantages, but it also presentsproblems. For example, institutionsof higher education across the coun-try are grappling with how to pre-pare students to use technologywhen technological advances areoutpacing the speed of curricularredesign.

One approach is to teach stu-dents how to be nimble thinkers,able to acquire and master newknowledge as needed. This, ofcourse, has been part of the St.Edward’s mission since its founding– to create life-long learners thathave the capacity to adapt tochange. It is part of the teachingphilosophy that has guided our fac-ulty since Father Edward Sorincame to Central Texas to establish auniversity. It couples liberal artseducation with practical skills andcareer preparation.

At St. Edward's, technology hasbeen introduced into the classroom,whether real or virtual, to supportthe goals of the curriculum.Students are taught not only how touse technology, but also to under-stand its nature and limitations, itspossibilities, and its role in societyand the economy.

A second problem posed by tech-nology is the demand it makes on auniversity’s resources. Remaining onthe cutting edge exacts major annualinvestments.

ing current technology, and the sup-port services to use it, for studentsand faculty. To illustrate:■ St. Edward’s commits over $2 mil-

lion annually to equipment andsupport services.

■ 24-hour computer workstationsare available in the residence halls.

■ This fall, the Ragsdale Center willaccommodate a 24-hour comput-er lab in the heart of campus.

■ A new academic building,planned to open in the fall of2002, will feature 12 state-of-the-art classrooms and a three-storycomputer tower that will provideadditional 24-hour access and cut-ting edge equipment to the uni-versity community.

■ St. Edward’s has made a commit-ment to deliver distance educationin a way that is consistent withpersonalized, student-centeredteaching.But meeting the challenges of the

future calls for higher levels of plan-ning and expertise. To prepare St.Edward’s, the Board of Trustees hasformed an ad hoc committee thatwill include members who are lead-ers in the field of technology. Thecommittee will create a plan toassure that we will continue to excelin offering education that effectivelyprepares our students for their experiences after graduation.

The university’s future will be anexciting one. I hope you will be partof bringing our plans “online.” ■

The Business Development Councilwrapped up the fifth year of its ExecutiveBriefing Luncheon Series. The briefings intro-duce the St. Edward’s community to the cor-porate and business communities.

Speakers this year included formerSecretary of the U.S. Department of Housingand Urban Development Henry Cisneros, whopresented his ideas on developing competitive-ly priced “villages within cities” on March 29

in the Mabee Ballroom of theRobert and Pearle Ragsdale Center.Cisneros is the chairman and chiefexecutive officer of American CityVista which developed a “smartgrowth strategy” to provide newresidential options for individuals ofall backgrounds and incomes. Texas cities being considered fornew neighborhoods include Austin,Brownsville, Dallas, Edinburg,Harlingen, Houston, Laredo,McAllen and San Antonio.

also spoke at a luncheon on Dec. 5, 2000. Hisspeech included a preview of the 2001Legislative Session and its projected impact onbusiness and education.

Other speakers that participated in theExecutive Briefing Luncheon Series includedGregory T. Bourgeios who spoke on“Reducing the Cost of Conflict: How to UseMediation More Effectively” Feb. 6 in theMabee Ballroom. Bourgeios is a partner withGalton, Cunningham & Bourgeios, P.L.L.C andhis firm has mediated more than 3,000 dis-putes and trained more that 1,000 peoplenationally and internationally in the art of con-flict resolution.

“With the luncheons we were able tokeep focused on mission-related topics suchas Henry Cisneros's focus on affordable hous-ing,” said Michael Guerra, ’83, director of corporate foundation relations. “And businesses are talking about mediation as an option instead of litigation.”

EASTER BASKETSBRIGHTENLIVES

This spring, Campus Ministry cele-brated the sixth annual Easter basketdrive benefiting children from AIDSServices of Austin, Informe-SIDA, localshelters and schools.

The drive, coordinated by CarmenSaegert, secretary for Campus Ministry,began April 2 and ran through April 9.Faculty, staff and students who participat-ed in the drive were given the first name,gender and age of the child in need. When putting the baskets together, volunteers had a $15 pricecap, choosing the items that best fit the child receiving the basket.

On April 11, cars and sports utility vehicles were loaded with 157 baskets, 82 for boys and 75for girls. According to Saegert, this year’s baskets were a total surprise to the children of each of theagencies. “These children were not aware they were receiving these baskets for Easter,” she said.

Since its inception, the drive has become increasingly popular among faculty, students and staff.More than 100 baskets have been collected each year through the drive.

The experiential learning program at St. Edward’s University has been an importantpart of the university’s curriculum and a bene-fit to the surrounding communities. Duringthe fall and spring semesters, three professorsassigned service learning projects to theirclasses in order to raise awareness of thestruggles of the refugee population in Austin.

In Associate Professor of Spanish JobyMcClendon’s “Spanish for Bilinguals I” class,students worked with Cuban refugees. At thebeginning of the semester McClendon askedher students how they could serve the Cubanrefugee population at Caritas. Working withthe Community Resource Developer DitaNiyogi, the students streamlined their projectand were allowed access to the Caritas facilityin order to work with the refugees. The pro-ject benefited two groups, the refugees and thestudents, who McClendon said, “were not onlyworking on their Spanish, but were workingon being better citizens in the global commu-nity.”

Wendy Erisman’s class, “The AmericanExperience,” helped students find their identi-ties as Americans by working with “new”Americans. In addition to working withrefugees at Caritas, the students were also

asked to trace their family histories as immi-grants. “This particular project gave the stu-dents the opportunity to realize that everyoneis new to America at some point or another,”Erisman said.

Instructor of Religious Studies RichardBautch’s “Justice, Peace and Liberation” classalso worked with Caritas. At the beginning ofthe semester his class met with Caritas case-workers in order to be assigned to differentrefugees. Groups of students met refugees atthe airport, helped refugees with appointmentsat clinics and attended the English as a secondlanguage class as part of their assignment. Thesecond phase of the project involved keepingjournals and writing reflection papers.Students were then asked to present theirreflections, along with their refugees, to vari-ous Catholic churches in order to raise aware-ness for Caritas and its mission.

Bautch said he hopes that students tooksomething away from the experience.

“I hope they came away with a sense ofhow to connect the insights of service to thepoor with the broader life of faith as lived inchurches and other faith communities.”

FIRST LUCIANSYMPOSIUM HELD

The first-ever Brother Lucian BlerschSymposium, held on campus Feb. 16, broughttogether mathematicians and scientists to dis-cuss some of the recent connections betweenmathematics and science and to underscorethe importance of undergraduate research andscholarly activity among students.

The symposium will be a yearly eventhighlighting natural sciences. The event wasnamed in honor of the late Brother LucianBlersch, CSC, who was a professor of engi-neering at St. Edward’s from 1938 to 1971,and in whose name an endowment given bythe J.B.N. Morris family provides support tothe natural sciences. The symposium wasmoderated by the holder of the endowedLucian Blersch Professorship, Professor ofMathematics Jean McKemie.

The symposium included several guestlecturers. Professor Ken Stephenson of theUniversity of Tennessee gave a keynote presen-tation, “Circle Packing meets Brain Mapping:Nineteenth century math meets twenty-firstcentury neuroscience.” He described how cir-cle packing, a discrete version of function theory used with computers, is aiding neuro-scientists by providing routine imaging of thehuman cerebral cortex. Professor Hong Qianof University of Washington gave anotherkeynote presentation, “Mathematical Modelingin Biology.” Qian’s research has included themodeling of enzyme kinetics, muscle contrac-tion and cancer metastasis.

In addition to the lectures, undergradu-ates presented their research. A panel dis-cussed such topics as using computers, mathematics and information science in lifesciences and the role of undergraduates infuture research.

Alumni Tim Russ, ’79, and Bruce Young, ’79,returned to the Mary Moody Northen Theatre stage asEquity Guest Artists this spring with the production of E/REmergency Room.

Russ and Young brought with them years of experi-ence and a long list of starring roles, including work intheater, television and film. Russ has most recently madehis mark on Star Trek: Voyager as Tuvok. Young hasstarred in numerous films including Phenomenon, Basic

Instinct, The Color of Money and the soon-to-be-released Jurassic Park III.MMNT has a history of recruiting accomplished Equity Guest Artists to work one-on-

one with students. Other Equity Artists who have performed at St. Edward’s University in thepast include David Birney, Michael Costello, Babs George and Tom Parker.

The fall semester will begin with a production of Romeo & Juliet, running Oct. 10-21.Playing for Time will highlight the MMNT stage Nov. 7-18. All shows run Wednesdaythrough Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the fall. Call 448-8484 for reservations.

Graduate program offerings at St.Edward’s doubled in size this year with theaddition of two groundbreaking new pro-grams: the Master of Liberal Arts and theMaster of Science in OrganizationalLeadership and Ethics.

The Master of Liberal Arts (MLA), whichbegan this fall, is a progressive interdiscipli-nary degree in humanities, arts, sciences, and social sciences. Through the new pro-gram, students are encouraged to develop abroad-based knowledge of critical issues incontemporary culture, including a curriculumcentered on change, identity and leadership.

The MLA program is expected to appealto a broad range of individuals in the centralTexas area. “As we set out to create this pro-gram, we found that many people are lookingfor an academic experience that transcendsdisciplines and enriches them personally andintellectually,” said Paula Marks, the associateprofessor of American Studies, who directs theprogram. “The program is ideal for thoselooking for an opportunity to broaden theirunderstanding of the world.”

This spring, St. Edward’s Universitylaunched the new Master of Science inOrganizational Leadership and Ethics pro-gram. The MSOLE is designed to respond to

the leadership development needs of the busi-ness community, both profit and non-profit. In order to meet those needs, the MSOLE pro-gram promotes leadership as a process thatinspires cooperation among people, promotescritical thought and ethical action, inspiresproductivity within and beyond the organiza-tion, and works toward progress for the indi-vidual and the organization.

“Most organizations seek leaders whoare ethical and responsible in their work envi-ronment,” said Marsha Kelliher, dean of theGraduate School of Management. “We arepreparing our students to be the next genera-tion of leaders.”

Program additions for the fall of 2001include a bachelor’s degree in human servicesfor New College students, a bachelor’s degreein international business and bachelor’sdegrees and teacher certification in interdisci-plinary English language arts and reading,interdisciplinary mathematics and reading andinterdisciplinary social studies and reading.Other additions include a minor in kinesiologywith a coaching emphasis, a minor in interna-tional business and a minor in Catholic studies.

President George Martin presented grad-uating seniors with the prestigious Presidential

Presidential Award winners are selectedbased on nominations and their qualities ofleadership, scholarship and service. Studentswho graduated between December 2000 andMay 2001 were eligible.

At a Graduate Honors Night April 28, students in the university’s Master’s of BusinessAdministration and Master’s of Human Servicesprograms also were honored. SharonElizabeth Arendale, MAHS ’01, received theMAHS Student Organization Achievement inExcellence Award and Pamela D. Benson,MAHS ’01, received the H-E-B DiversityLeadership Award. The Outstanding MAHSGraduate Award was presented to Tracy L.Morse, MAHS ’01. Woo was namedOutstanding MBA Student at Graduate HonorsNight. Victoria Q. Arellano, MAHS ’01, wasnamed Outstanding College of ProfessionalGraduate Studies Graduate.

Outstanding faculty also received nods atthe Center for Teaching Excellence AwardsApril 19. Associate Professor of AccountingBarbara Cassidy and Associate Professor ofEnglish Brother George Klawitter, CSC,were honored as outstanding contract facultymembers. Penny Green was honored as anadjunct professor.

SPORT SHORTSBoth the men’s and women’s tennis

teams represented the university in theNCAA Division II National Championshipsregional finals on May 4 and 5.

The Hilltopper men came withinone game of making their secondstraight trip to the finals, losing toregional host Abilene Christian University,4-5. In their last match, the Hilltoppersclaimed the top three single matches.Players included Aubrey Taylor, ’01,Peter Saunders, ’01, and DavidAsghar, ’05.

ACU took the other three singlesmatches, setting up the winner to bedetermined by the doubles matches.Taylor and Saunders lead the match,defeating ACU. ACU nipped St. Edward’sin both the second and third sets winning9-7 in both matches, ending theHilltoppers' season.

The women’s team traveled toTahlequah, Okla. on the same date tocompete in their first-ever regional com-petition. In their first day of play, thewomen upset Grand Valley State. Weather short-ened the match to three singles and three dou-bles matches. St. Edward’s took five matchesfrom GVS, giving them enough wins to call thematch. Singles wins came from Tracy Cannon,’01, Juliette Andrade, ’04, and KatherineFrame, ’01. Cannon and Frame, along withAndrade and Liz Mauer, ’04, won the doublescompetition.

Advancing as far as a Hilltopper women’stennis team ever has, the team fell to hostNortheastern State University in the regionalfinals, 2-7.

The St. Edward’s baseball team won 28regular season games and qualified to competein the inaugural Heartland ConferenceTournament. Winning the most games in thethree-year tenure of Head Coach GeneSalazar, ’91, the Hilltoppers were led by astrong senior class. Among the seniors was firstbaseman Stephan Poe, ’01, who led the teamwith a .410 batting average. Other standoutsincluded outfielder Brad Loper, ’01, who was

the team-leader with a .693 slugging percent-age and outfielder Juan Garcia, ’01, whoaveraged 13 homeruns and 44 RBI’s.

Brian Oehler, ’01, turned in his bestyear on the mound leading the team in 4.06ERs, 20 appearances and 2 saves. PitcherCarlos Balderas, ’03, also posted a team-best8-3 record.

With their new Interim Head Coach RoseRuffino, the Hilltopper softball team battledthrough the challenges of a tough schedule andended the season, 20-24-1.

Honored as All-Heartland Conferencewere infielder Ashley Self, ’01, infielderChrissy Hartman, ’04, outfielder TiffanyTirres, ’03, pitcher/outfielder (as utility play-er) Nicole Lozano, ’02, and outfielder (at-large selection) Alisha Homann, ’01.

HOMECOMING 2001With the increased

spirit awareness of stu-dents, faculty, and staff, St.Edward’s celebrated thefirst homecoming in recentuniversity history.Homecoming Week includ-ed a string of nightlyevents, highlighted by a“We Have Spirit” parade, ahomecoming basketballgame and homecominggala at the Omni hotel indowntown Austin.

To foster an addedelement of fun for students, a point system wascreated so student teams could compete for thehomecoming trophy, which was given out to“The Most Spirited Group” during halftime ofthe homecoming game. The eight teams com-peting for “Most Spirited Homecoming Group”included B.T.C. (East Hall), Delta Sigma Pi,Rowdy Hilltoppers, SEU Cheerleaders, SEU EliteDance Team, Psychological Society, andUniversity Programming Board (UPB).

By all accounts Homecoming Week was asuccess in increasing school spirit. Students,faculty and staff worked together to establish anew St. Edward’s University tradition that willbe celebrated for years to come.

SANTIAGO NAMEDMBA DISTINGUISHED

ALUMNAGwen Santiago, ’78, MBA ’88, was

recently awarded the 2001 MBA DistinguishedAlumni Award from St. Edward’s University.

Santiago is the executive director of TexasAssociation of School Business Officials(TASBO). She is affectionately referred to as a‘double Hilltopper’ because she received bothher undergraduate and graduate degrees fromSt. Edward’s.

Prior to TASBO, Santiago was the chieffinancial officer for the Round RockIndependent School District for 25 years andfor the North East Independent School Districtin San Antonio for seven years. She received

Spirit activities, including a parade full ofdecorated cars, highlighted HomecomingWeek.

NOT JUST BUSINESSAS USUAL“Live justly and work ethically.” That’s the

mantra of Anita Roddick, who addressed the St.Edward’s University community this spring inJones Auditorium. Her address was part of theAustin’s Leading Women Entrepreneurs’ Forum.

Anita Roddick is the founder of The BodyShop, a skin and hair care retailer that pro-vides quality products based on Roddick’s val-ues of ethical treatment of workers as well asenvironmental and animal rights. Roddickimparted those values to the audience in herspeech, which focused on business and ethics.

In her speech, Roddick said that busi-nesses can be successful and have high-profitmargins while remaining socially responsiblefor their actions. She said that The Body Shop’s rise from mediocre beginnings to global suc-cess stands as proof that business and ethics

can work hand in hand. Roddick hasused her company as a sounding boardto raise awareness of human rights abuses and the need for animal and environmental protection. She said she is committed to shattering the stereotypescosmetic companies have created forconsumers.

Roddick’s speech set the tone forother speakers of the evening, whichincluded Carolyn Carlson, chief operatingofficer of Journee Software; Robin Loving,principal of Communication Results;Kerry Tate, president of TateAustin; andDeborah Vollmer-Dahlke, chief operatingofficer, president and co-founder of Zilliant.

Santiago alsoserved as chair ofthe TASBOLegislativeCommittee for 10

years and chair ofthe lead staff for the Texas School Alliance, aconsortium of 24 of the largest school districtsin Texas.

When asked for one of her greatest per-sonal accomplishments, Santiago said, “beingable to complete my bachelors while juggling afull-time job, a husband and two teenagers.”

undergraduate and adult students with mes-sages about the distinctive nature of a St.Edward’s education. A professional advertisingagency has helped the university develop apositioning strategy that is uniquely character-istic of St. Edward’s. The advertising campaignwill feature bold, captivating photography and compelling text.

The campaign will initially run in theAustin area and expand to other areas in thefuture.

ENHANCE SEU IMAGEAfter 17 years with the “skyline” logo, St.

Edward’s University introduced a new logo inJune. The logo will appear on all universitycommunications, marketing materials, signsand banners, etc. Merchandise carrying thenew logo is available in the bookstore now.

The logo reflects the school’s architectureand heritage through the use of an updatedimage of the tower. The new logo was designedto convey the university’s tradition of quality,while boasting a contemporary feel alignedwith our ambitious vision for the future. Thedecision to change the logo was made afterreceiving input from faculty, staff and students.

In addition to the new logo, other imagechanges are on the horizon. To support its objectives of increased awareness, abetter-defined image and enrollmentgrowth, St. Edward’s University islaunching its first comprehensive imageadvertising campaign in September.

MAGAZINE RECEIVES HONORSSt. Edward’s University Magazine received two Grand Awards at the Council for Advancement

and Support of Education’s District IV Conference in Fort Worth in April.The magazine took home top honors for overall four-color periodical, placing above magazines

from institutions such as the University of North Texas, the University of Houston and BaylorUniversity.

Additionally, the magazine took a second Grand Award for design improvement for the periodi-cal’s transformation from a tabloid-style newsletter, SEU News, to a four-color magazine in the fall of1999. St. Edward’s University Magazine placed above publications submitted by the University ofTexas at Brownsville, Arkansas State University and Oklahoma State University.

“Being honored by CASE is a remarkable accomplishment for the staff of St. Edward’sUniversity Magazine, but it is definitely reflective of a larger institutional move toward excellence in our academic programs, facilities and more,” said Susan Wolf, editor.

The magazine also earned a Pewter Award for cover design for the “Why I Teach” issue, published in August 2000. The university’s undergraduate viewbook also received nods for design.

THE TEMPLETONCLASSAlthough the listed course title may be

“Economic Freedom and Ethical Choices,” thecourse as taught in concert by Dan Dabney,Phillip Thompson and Bill Zanardi quicklybecame known as: “The Templeton Class” thisspring.

The group of 16 students and three pro-fessors participated in this grant-supportedclass through The Freedom Project, which isfunded by The John F. Templeton Foundation.This program endeavors to assist the universitywith development of interdisciplinary coursesto explore issues and concepts associated withfreedom. Some of the other institutions award-ed grants this year were Boston College, DukeUniversity and the University of Maryland.

The course featured an array of guest lec-turers, some of whom spoke to the campuscommunity in addition to their work with the“Templeton Class.” They included: Dr. WaltRostow, professor and special assistant to pres-idents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon BainesJohnson; Dr. Phillip McShane, professor emeri-tus at Mount Saint Vincent University in Canada;Sister Amata Miller, IHM, visiting professorof economics at College of Saint Catherine andmember of St. Edward’s University Board ofTrustees; and Dr. Bethke Elshtain, The LauraSpelman Rockefeller Professor of Ethics at TheUniversity of Chicago Divinity School.

One unique feature of the class was thefunding of awards for Best Class Presentations.Students were required to provide an extensiveoral presentation and a related paper on anissue of ethics and economics. The three final-ists were awarded a monetary stipend and acertificate acknowledging their excellence atthe final class meeting, with the top honorsgoing to James Nisbet, ’04, for his presenta-tion on The Digital Divide. Additional awardsfor distinguished work were granted toStephanie Bradley, ’03, and AmalyssaRodriguez, ’01.

SEU HONORS■ St. Edward’s University was named the United Way

Capital Area’s Volunteer Provider of Year in April.

■ St. Edward’s University students were honoredwith Austin Critics Table’s Deacon Crain Award,which annually recognizes a theater student foroutstanding work. This year, theater majors BrookeParker, ’03, and Brad Carlin, ’02, tied for thehonor. A St. Edward’s University student has wonthe Deacon Crain Award each year since theaward’s creation. Past receipts include Lee Eddy,’00, Kevin Archambault, ’99, and Cory Cruser, ’00.

■ St. Edward’s was awarded $1.5 million over afour-year period to lead a joint effort betweeneducational and community leaders to improve theeducational process for Hispanic students throughthe Austin ENLACE partnership. The partnership isthe local component of a national ENLACE initia-tive, funded with by the W.K. Kellogg Foundationand the Houston Endowment, Inc. St. Edward’sUniversity is one of only 13 lead institutions andthe only private institution to receive the funding.

■ For the second consecutive year, two St. Edward’sUniversity basketball guards, Ryan Flores, ’02,and Benjamin Lyman, ’01, were named the 2001Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars Awardees by BlackIssues in Higher Education (April 26, 2001).

■ Five St. Edward’s University students from theCANDAX-ME McNair Scholars Program have beenselected to participate in the prestigious 2001Summer Research Internship at the University ofNotre Dame. Saul Alanis, ’02, Pedro Garza, ’02,and Anita Ramos, ’03, Leodoro Perales, ’02, andJudith Patricia Razo, ’02, will participate in aneight-week summer research internship. During theinternship, they will conduct faculty directedresearch and present their findings at a researchsymposium.

guest speaker Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC, with an honorary degree during spring com-mencement. Father Hesburgh, president emeritus of Notre Dame University, is recognized for hisinvolvement in the advancement of higher education, civil rights, and world peace. ■

As soon as I walked into the minis-cule efficiency apartment, I could smellthe Chinese spices that would remindme of my first visit to a Chinese mar-ketplace – the kind with hanging drieddead pigs and endless aisles of tea leavesand cryptic bottles of foreign liquids.This was my first initiation into thewonderful friendship I would have withmy friends Heidi, from Germany, andMorrison and Toni, both from China.It was during my freshman year that Imet the petite German blonde girl wholooked as if she had stepped out of aJames Bond movie, and Toni andMorrison, who had taken Americanizednames from a world-renowned skate-boarder and the late musician JimMorrison, respectively.

We became instant friends and oneday decided to have a dinner party forwhich each of us cooked somethingfrom our homelands. Since I came fromConnecticut, I decided to cook two tra-ditional New England dishes: mashedpotatoes and rutabagas. Heidi’s tradi-tional dish consisted of sausages andsauerkraut. Toni and Morrison bothcontributed fish stew to the diverse din-ner party.

As we gathered around the smalltable in Morrison’s tiny apartment, thearoma from the different foods filledour noses and set our stomachs togrowling. Our international utensilswere laid out: four chopsticks, twoforks, three spoons, and a knife. Thefirst course was Heidi’s Germansausages and sauerkraut. We devouredher delicious meal and waited just aseagerly for the second course. Morrisonwent into the kitchen to remove his fishstew from the stove. I followed him into

the kitchen, asking himif I could lend a hand.He took the fish out ofthe pot and laid it outon the cutting board.

Morrison thenreached into the spice cabi-net and removed somespices he had brought withhim from China. Thinkingthat I was helping him out, Iremoved a butcher knife fromthe drawer and, peering into thefish’s black glassy eyes, I proceededto hack its head. It mocked me withits sneering, toothy smile. I succeededin separating its head from its body. Iwas about to dispose of this evil fishhead when Morrison stepped betweenthe trashcan and me in an attempt tosave his delicacy.

“What are you doing?” he said sur-prised. “You were about to throw awaythe best part of the dish.” I apologizedprofusely. I explained to him that inAmerica the fish head is disposed ofalong with the internal organs. He foundthis quite bizarre, not to mention waste-ful. He replied, “You must be crazy…thehead has the best flavor.”

Morrison insisted that I try a pieceof the head. Out of both curiosity andpoliteness, I tasted a very small piece. Ifit were not for the teeth and the eyes gaz-ing into my own, I might have enjoyedthe experience. Morrison was right aboutthe flavor. The spices from China addeda unique, peppery taste.

As Morrison fervently devoured hisfish, I brought out my potatoes andrutabagas. The recipe did not turn outas I had planned. The rutabagas turnedout well; however, the potatoes could

have been used as an adhesive. I servedmy friends and watched apprehensivelyas they meekly ate their meal. Out ofpoliteness, they did not mention howterrible the potatoes tasted, and Ithought to myself that they might havebeen incapable of opening their gluedmouths to complain. After I announcedmy mistake, Toni smiled at the realiza-tion that he could stop eating my rendition of Crazy Glue. Fortunately,my friends found the rutabagas quiteenjoyable, although very different fromanything they had ever tasted before.

The first time I walked into MainBuilding at St. Edward’s, I noticed theplaque that stated the university’s mis-sion. At the time, these were merelywords. But I have never had to rereadthe statement; I can feel the wordsthrough my interactions with the stu-dents and faculty here on campus.When I remember the dinner I hadwith my friends that night, the words“appreciating diverse cultures” come tomind. I would have never met theselife-long friends if it were not for St.Edward’s University. ■

The St. Edward’s University Brown Scholars are among the

university’s finest students. While they possess a minimum 3.5 grade

point average and excel in their academic subjects, they are also

reflections of St. Edward’s University’s commitment to service. This year’s

Brown Scholars are no exception. Whether finding creative ways to motivate

students to give to a food bank or encouraging their soccer team to mentor

elementary school children, the Brown Scholars have found creative

ways to give back to the community through their service projects.

Elena Dodd, ’01At the end of every semester,

St. Edward’s students head home withcases of extra food and drink from theSouth Congress Market. The requiredmeal plans for residence hall studentsare paid in advance and several stu-dents finish the semester with unusedcredit.

Brown Scholar Elena Dodd decid-ed to focus her Brown Scholar com-munity service project on using thissurplus of food to help feed the Austinhungry. She initiated a plan allowingstudents to donate extra meal planfunds to the Austin Food Bank.

“It was really an obvious step,”said Dodd. “The difficult part was putting the plan into action. It took a combined effort from students andstaff.”

To purchase end-of-semester bulkorders, students fill out personal orderforms. For her project, Dodd created a

begins with questions such as “Whoam I?” and ends with the tools to helpthe reader answer those questions. Theoverall theme of the book is about tak-ing it slowly and using the universityand its staff as resources. Cantu’s bookwill be distributed to the directors ofdepartments such as Career Planningand Experiential Learning,Psychological Services and Admissionsso that everyone will have access to theinformation.

Cantu knows what it is like tosearch for some sort of direction. “Iwas undeclared for a year and a half. Iwas trying to find what kind of aca-demic niche I wanted to have at St.Edward’s.” Cantu found her niche andis graduating in May with a major inliberal studies with concentrations inreligious studies and philosophy.

After graduation, Cantu willattend graduate school at BostonCollege where she will study systematics. — D. C.

Tommy Chenoweth, ’02Brown Scholar Tommy

Chenoweth spends as little time on thesidelines as possible. Whether he’sworking hard in the classroom, playingfor the Hilltoppers varsity soccer teamor mentoring Austin youth, he’s alwaysin the game.

This past semester, Chenowethcreated a mentoring program that pro-vided 20 Travis Heights ElementarySchool students with the opportunityto receive weekly tutoring and guid-ance from a St. Edward’s Universitysoccer player.

“The experience was great for boththe players and the students involved,”said Chenoweth. “We were able to real-ly help the students, giving them valu-able time and attention that allowedthem to learn and grow. And at thesame time, the players got such a greatsense of reward from helping these kidsreach their goals.”

Topics in the newsletter includethe school lunch menu, opinions aboutthe recent presidential elections andwritings about entering junior high.Once the newsletter is put together, itis distributed to students, parents andschool administrators. — D. C.

Susanna Cantu, ’01In the Meadows Coffee shop on

campus, Susanna Cantu holds in herhand the finished product of longhours of hard work. Cantu is a firstyear Brown Scholar recipient who haswritten a book to help benefit fresh-man and undeclared majors at St.Edward’s University.

“I wanted to write a book thatwould help people find out what theywant from college and what they wantto do when they graduate,” she said. “I had always intended on writing thisbook. The Brown Foundation gave methe perfect opportunity to do so whilehelping with my tuition.”

Vocational Awareness Handbookwas written by Cantu with the adviso-ry help of Ray McMackin and theillustrative talents of Cantu’s friend,Jorge Alvarez, ’01. Each chapter

Elaine Moser, ’01In the Moody Hall computer lab,

fingers fly furiously over keys whileElaine Moser sits calmly and confi-dently in front of her computer, guid-ing her mouse over various icons onthe St. Catherine’s website. “Here isthe link to Life Teen at St. Catherine’s.Or you can link onto the nationalwebpage, here,” she says clicking onthe icons.

Moser designed and maintains theLife Teen website for St. Catherine ofSienna Catholic Church. Her projectdeals specifically with St. Catherine’schapter of Life Teen, a nationally rec-ognized organization that focuses ondeveloping spirituality in young adultsthrough events and activities within aCatholic environment.

When chosen as a Brown Scholar,Moser was initially interested in partic-ipating in the religious education K-12program at St. Catherine’s. Once shespoke with the Life Teen coordinator,she found she could be more help toLife Teen by utilizing her skills withwebpage design to help its site becomemore effective and reach more people.

In addition to the Life Teen proj-ect, Moser is working on a Family Lifewebpage which will be up and runningthis summer and will focus on tips forparents, scheduled family events at thechurch and activities for both childrenand adults. “Life Teen allows teens ofall denominations the opportunity todevelop their spirituality in an environment in which they are comfortable,” she said. — D. As the Most Reverend JohnMcCarthy stood before thecrowd of friends and admirers

ready to give his acceptance speech, theself-effacing bishop emeritus of theAustin Diocese hushed the crowd,modestly quelling their applause. Theapplause was deserved though, as hisfriends and admirers gathered to honorMcCarthy, a life-long advocate of edu-cation and social justice.

McCarthy accepted the ninth annualBusiness Development Council’sMission Award in the Mabee Ballroomof the Robert and Pearle RagsdaleCenter, in true McCarthy style.

said Luci Baines Johnson, ’97, whointroduced McCarthy at the event.“This was vintage McCarthy modesty— a half page vitae for a ministry thathas spanned over forty-five years!”

President George Martin, who presented McCarthy with his award,also spoke of the former Bishop’s contributions.

“I have had the good fortune ofworking with Bishop John McCarthy,”said President George Martin. “I havewitnessed his commitment to theAustin Diocese and the greater Austincommunity, his social ministry, hisadvocacy of education and the manyother ways he has helped shape thelives of individuals.”

In his acceptance speech, McCarthy

spoke of community and called uponeveryone to “not just be taxpayers andgood citizens but to love our commu-nity.” He praised St. Edward’s for“finding the needs of the communityand responding to those needs.”

He also spoke of the CollegeAssistance Migrant Program studentshe has seen graduate from the programat St. Edward’s. He expressed pride inthe fact St. Edward’s has educated“2,000 CAMP students who are goingto give back to the larger community.”The CAMP project is a program that is very near and dear to the bishop’sheart. In gratitude for his service, the Business Development Councilhonored McCarthy with a CAMPscholarship in his name that would

state’s policies on funding child protec-tion, saying, “I have been appalled atthe difference in public policy in thisstate between what we do in terms ofprison expenditures and what we spendto protect children.”

While working for the U.S. CatholicConference in the late 1960’s, hehelped forge the idea that ultimatelybecame the Catholic Campaign forHuman Development. The program,operated by the U.S. Catholic bishops,is designed to empower the poorthrough self-help projects. A longtimeadvocate for the poor, BishopMcCarthy developed a concept whilepastor of St. Theresa’s Parish inHouston that grew into parish socialministry — an idea that doing charityand justice outreach was the responsi-bility of the entire parish, not just asmall group of parishioners. Throughhis leadership with the Austin Diocese,many parishes have developed fullfledged social ministry outreaches.

The Mission Award was created bythe University Business DevelopmentCouncil in 1994 in order to celebratethe accomplishments of state andnational leaders whose commitment to visionary leadership, educationalexcellence, ethics and moral responsi-bility has inspired positive change inour world. ■

McCarthy joined an elite group ofindividuals who have been honored bythe Business Development Councilwith this award over the past eightyears. Recipients have included U.S.Congressman Jake Pickle, former TexasState Comptroller John Sharp, formerFirst Lady Barbara Bush, educator TomLuce, businessman and athlete RogerStaubach, Austin philanthropists Frankand Sue McBee and, last year, profes-sional golfer Ben Crenshaw.

In January 2001, Pope John Paul IIaccepted the resignation of the MostReverend John E. McCarthy. Installedas a bishop of the Austin Diocese inFebruary 1986, the Most ReverendJohn McCarthy has served both theAustin Diocese and the greater Austincommunity for the past 15 years.“Bishop McCarthy’s lifelong missionhas been to love all God’s children withword and deed; regardless of their coloror economic circumstances, they’vebeen precious in his sight,” saidJohnson.

Over the years, a number of socialcauses have been close to the bishop’sheart, including poverty, education,and preventing child abuse. In aDecember 1998 issue of the CatholicSpirit, Bishop McCarthy decried the

n March 15, the St. Edward’s Universitycommunity lost a dear

friend — Robert L. “Bobby”Ragsdale. He was 85 years old.

Filled with a selfless generosity toan institution he learned to love overthe years, Bobby Ragsdale’s $3 milliongift led the capital campaign for theconstruction of the 57,000-square-footRobert & Pearle Ragsdale Center. Themultifaceted center serves as a centralspot on campus for student activities,dining and community meetings.Bobby and his late wife, Pearle, werealso behind the creation of theRagsdale Plaza, located between MainBuilding and the Carriage House.

Ragsdale had a deep interest in education. He studied mechanicalengineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and his brother and twoof his nephews attended St. Edward’s.During the university’s Second CenturyCampaign, Ragsdale noted, “Educationis more important now than when Igrew up … a college education is amust nowadays. I felt that what I

could do would be able to make a difference.”

It was that desire to make a differ-ence that made Ragsdale well loved bythose who knew him. “Bobby has beenso supportive of St. Edward’sUniversity over the years. We will misshis kind and gentle spirit,” saidChristina Collier, former vice presidentof University Relations.

Former St. Edward’s PresidentPatricia Hayes said, “When we neededa champion, Bobby stepped forward.He wanted to help make college life amemorable experience for our students— he did that and so much more.”

Ragsdale was born Feb. 23, 1916,in Yoakum, Texas, to Robert L. andEthel Mae Johnston Ragsdale Sr. InJuly 1940, he married Pearle Baird.

Inspired by barnstormers in the1920s, Ragsdale knew he wanted to fly.He built his first plane at age 12. In1941, Bobby and Pearle moved toAustin where they owned and operatedRagsdale Flying Service, training flightinstructors and pilots for the Universityof Texas and St. Edward’s University.

In 1958, the business was renamedRagsdale Aviation, providing aircraftsales and service to general aviation.Operations were expanded to Houston,San Antonio and Dallas. They soldtheir final aviation operation in 1984and retired to enjoy their airplanes,their ranch and their friends. Pearledied in 1993.

St. Edward’s honored Ragsdalewith an honorary Doctor of HumaneLetters degree in 1995. He was activein civic affairs, serving a member of theSeton Northwest Development Board,original director and past president ofAustin Community Foundation, mem-ber and past director of Austin RotaryClub, and former chairman of theBoard of Austin National Bank prior to the merger with NationsBank.

Ragsdale was preceded in death byhis wife and his brother, Jim. Survivorsinclude a brother and two sisters-in-law, Bill and Iris Ragsdale of Pampaand Guadalupe Ragsdale of SanAntonio; and several nieces andnephews. ■

hen Richard Kopec, professorof computer science and chemistry, firstcame to St. Edward’s in 1985, facultydid not have computers on their desks.“Fifteen years ago, having that kind oftechnology just wasn’t possible,” hesaid.

Today, it is estimated that the uni-versity’s 21-member InstructionalTechnology staff supports more than960 university computers on campusand gives technical support to morethan 4,000 faculty, staff and students.Computers are everywhere: in class-rooms, residence halls, faculty offices,computer labs,even in hallways,where standingcomputer stationsallow students tocheck emailbetween classes.

While theincreasing presenceof personal com-puters in itself isremarkable, it’sonly an outwardsign of how muchteaching and learn-ing at St. Edward’shas been trans-formed by technol-ogy. Virtually everyaspect of teachingand learning istouched by tech-nology today, andthe manner inwhich St. Edward’sUniversity hasincorporated tech-nology has becomea distinctive part of the university’scharacter and reputation.

“Anyone who comes from anotheruniversity to St. Edward’s is usuallyamazed,” said Kin Barksdale, assistantprofessor of computer systems manage-ment. “They’re amazed that a universitythis size embraces technology and sup-

ports the professors in using technolo-gy. Very few universities of this sizehave the kind of IT support we enjoy.”

For a university nestled in theSilicon Hills of Austin — a marketwhere technology rules and the demandfor technology-versed job applicants isat an all-time high — keeping up theprogressive use of technology in teach-ing is more important than ever.

Technology in the Classroom

From class web sites to email, tech-nology has profoundly affected the way

professors teach at St.Edward’s. Some NewCollege and MBAcourses are heldonline, requiringextreme familiaritywith email and listserves. Some biologystudents may berequired to give web-based presentationsor a writing classmay require the useof HTML skills forprojects. A FinancialStatement Analysiscourse even usesaudio streaming.But before studentscan launch their ownweb pages or con-struct a PowerPoint®

presentation, stu-dents must have agrasp of the basics.For this reason, St.Edward’s instituted anew level of instruc-tion for students, the

Computer Competency Requirement.Beginning in the fall of 1999, all

entering undergraduate and adult NewCollege students at St. Edward’sUniversity have been required to satisfythe Computer CompetencyRequirement. By completing modules

Jenny Black is a typical Austin 18-year-old, with oneminor exception — Jenny isn’t real. But she may as wellbe to the students of Wendy Erisman’s class, “TheAmerican Experience.”

Erisman wanted her students to better understand thefrustration of less obvious forms of discrimination. Shedesigned a web-based simulation called “Scaling theWall,” in which students take on the role of JennyBlack, a young African-American woman. Jenny tries togo to college, get a job, buy a car and rent an apart-ment; however, at every turn, Jenny finds her choiceslimited by institutional discrimination. When Erisman’sstudents make a choice for Jenny that is not available,a window appears with statistics about discriminationand the obstacles minority groups face in Americansociety.

Erisman said that the simulation has been an eye-open-ing experience for her students, inspiring lively andinteresting class discussion. After completing the simula-tion, one wrote in her class journal, “I felt really frus-trated. You would have thought that I was Jenny andthat this was for real.” Reading responses like this,Erisman knows that she has achieved her goal — bring-ing to life a very unjust yet very real part of theAmerican Experience.

such as “Introduction to Computers,”“Introduction to Email,” “Introductionto Netscape and the World Wide Web,”“Basic Library Research,” “Introductionto Word Processing,” and “Introductionto Spreadsheets.” Students must satis-factorily complete a web-based test overeach module in order to fulfill thisrequirement.

“As the faculty incorporate moretechnology into curriculum, having stu-dents complete this requirement beforeor in conjunction with a class will allowfocus on class subject matter withoutdevoting class time teaching basic com-puter skills,” said Gloria Gonzales,computer competency coordinator forInstructional Technology.

Students who need to improvetheir computer skills before taking thetests have the opportunity to takeadvantage of several training optionsprovided by Instructional Technologyand the Library, including computerworkshops, online tutorials, printeddocumentation, and/or a free six-weekcomputer competency class.

However, students don’t have to becomputer science majors to acquiremore advanced skills in technologybeyond the basic requirement, thanksto a popular course titled “Introductionto Computer Science for Non Majors.”Each semester, six to eight sections ofthis course are offered to students. Inthe class, students are taught to usetechnology that was once only offeredto computer science majors, likeHTML and JavaScript™.

“Because technology is so pervasivehere, when you leave the Intro for NonMajors class, chances are you will con-tinue to use those skills and build onthem,” said Kopec. “It’s more or lessexpected that you know how to do cer-tain things. Students are expected toknow how to use a word processingprogram. They are expected to knowhow to use a spreadsheet. They areexpected to know how to do web pages.The more comfortable they are with

technology and the more access theyhave to it, the easier the learning oftechnology becomes for the student.”

Such course offerings do morethan prepare students for their class-room experiences; they prepare themfor a job market that demands comput-er skills more than ever before.

Supporting Demandthrough InnovativePrograms

Some St. Edward’s University stu-dents come to college with a high levelof computer skills and a desire for evenmore. Adult and traditional undergrad-uates are increasingly coming to St.Edward’s seeking an undergraduatedegree in computer science. In fact,computer science related majors areamong the most popular for students.St. Edward’s offers computer sciencemajors in traditional undergraduate,New College and Masters of BusinessAdministration programs.

In the traditional undergraduateprogram, computer science majorsstudy everything from programming tooperating systems, database manage-ment systems to networking. Adult students in New College’s Program forAccelerated College Education studyC++, Java™ and networking that pre-pares students for Microsoft® Windows2000® certification. Even the universi-ty’s Masters of Business Administrationoffers concentrations in managementinformation systems and e-commerce.

Teaching such subjects providessome special challenges for professorslike Kopec and Barksdale. Just as tech-nology changes, course content, text-books and other instruction are also ina constant state of change.

“The hardest thing about all ofthis, for me, and I’m sure everyone else,is just the rate of change,” said Kopec.“Just as you get comfortable doingsomething a certain way, a whole betterway comes around to do it and you sortof have to start all over again. You have

We’ve all been there at some point, hopelessly frus-trated with Internet research, helplessly surfing frombadwriting.com to uglypage.org. It seems that all toooften, novice web-page designers use their beginninglevel mastery of HTML to shamelessly broadcast badprose to the world and further discredit the mediumas a whole.

But this embarrassment to language won’t happen toSt. Edward’s University students—not if AssistantProfessor Laurie Drummond and Website ManagerSheryl Scott can help it.

In the fall of 2000, the two-person team taught theuniversity’s first “Writing and Publishing on theWorld Wide Web” class, in which students learnedthe do’s and don’ts of web-appropriate writing, sitemapping, navigation and design. For their final proj-ect, students collaborated to produce Beyond the Hill:A Compilation of Student Reviews, an Austin enter-tainment e-zine with articles ranging in subjects fromthe Austin Museum of Art to Wheatsville Co-opGrocery store.

Drummond explained that the addition of this newelective was inspired by “the explosion of writing onthe web—so much of it bad.” She said, “even if stu-dents don’t end up designing websites, if they writefor a webzine, they will know the limitations andpossibilities of this medium.”

Scott said, “The students learned how to work withinthe constraints of the medium by experimenting withtechniques and getting first-hand experience with thechallenges of web design.”

to relearn. And that’s one of the biggestchallenges of using technology in teach-ing. If you just stand in place and neverread and learn new things and just stickto the textbook, in about three years,your students will probably stone you if you walk into the classroom, becausethey’ll know more than you do.”

Keeping up with technology is alsoa challenge for Barksdale.“The majorityof my students are people already work-ing in the technology field,” saidBarksdale. “Most of our students workfor places like Motorola, AMD, Dell,IBM and Semtech. So my students arealready using technology. They areaware of new technology, so they alwayswant you to offer the newest technology.”

Can the Mission beWired?

St. Edward’s University has alwaysbeen committed to preparing studentsfor the future through a balance of theliberal arts and practical skills. But asthe university becomes increasinglytechnology oriented, is personal atten-tion and teaching excellence sacrificed?

While instructors at St. Edward’sare embracing technology, core valuesare maintained even in the most tech-nologically driven classrooms. Instructional technology staff memberslike Jason Rosenblum, instructional sys-tems manager for InstructionalTechnology, are continually workingwith professors to help them create usesfor technology that are unique to St.Edward’s. Rosenblum helps managecomponents of online classes, offers fac-ulty development through the FacultyResource Center and assists professorswith creating their technology-driventeaching components.

“We try to do more than just helpprofessors develop a way to put outinformation,” he said. “We try toencourage interactivity. We try to buildin assessment measures that studentsand professors can access.”

Instructional Technology also

offers Summer Institutes, three-weekworkshops for faculty to develop tech-nology components for their classes.“It’s a time for faculty to not onlyincorporate technology in their teach-ing, but also for them to reevaluate theclass and interact,” Rosenblum said.“The faculty learn from each other.”

Professors point to InstructionalTechnology’s assistance as an importantdifference between St. Edward’s andother universities.

“Very few universities have thekind of assistance we have in theFaculty Resource Center,” Barksdalesaid. “At a lot of universities, if you area professor who wants to put somethingonline, you’re on your own. Here, youcan get a summer grant and work on itduring the summer. Professors get tofocus on content and get help with thetechnical side, which allows you tofocus on how to implement technologyconstructively.”

The results are courses that notonly allow students to be well-versed intechnology, but also prepared to take onfuture challenges.

“The ability to teach yourselfsomething that you didn’t know how todo and the confidence that you can doit are so important,” said Kopec.“Those are the things that students pickup in and out of the classroom at St.Edward’s. And in the long run, thoseare the things that make these studentsvaluable employees. They truly becomelife-long learners.” ■

Animated by technologyEammon Healy, Associate Professor of Chemistry

“Fun is something that we too often overlook in education, especially science education,” said EamonnHealy, associate professor of chemistry. “Technologycan serve to make even the most abstruse topics fun.”

With this in mind, Healy designed a curriculum for hisBiochemistry class that utilized instructional technolo-gies such as computer-generated imaging, animation,simulation and web-based tutorials.

Healy found that his students’ mastery of course con-tent improved dramatically with the introduction ofcomputer-aided fun. Digital animation brought coursecontent to life, detailing complex chemical reactions togive students a fuller sense of the process. Online tuto-rials enabled self-paced learning and the opportunityfor students to come to solutions on their own.

Healy’s innovation in the classroom has been a testa-ment to the potential for interactive teaching tools, andit has also proven the benefits of students’ interactionwith each other. Realizing that a command of materialis well demonstrated when students can teach it toeach other, Healy assigned students to use technologyto design their own instructional material.

“Fully one third of my Biochemistry course involvesstudent presentations of web-based, collaborativeprojects on a variety of topics,” he said. “This servesto involve the students in the design and delivery oftheir own curriculum.”

2Web Registration: Theregistration process at St.Edward’s is easier than everbefore. All St. Edward’sUniversity students are

assigned a computer account upon arrivaland are required to use WebReg, a web-based registration system, to register andmake schedule adjustments online. Withjust a simple point and a click, studentscan now easily process their own registra-tion or drop a class in less than 10 min-utes. 7Buying BooksOnline: In the fall of 2000 the St.Edward’s Bookstorelaunched its online

bookstore at www.stedwards-bookstore.com. Graduate, New Collegeand PACE students can now log on topurchase new and used textbooks fortheir classes while avoiding long lines, andcommuting to campus to purchase books.“It has cut down on the traffic in thebookstore and overall students find it tobe very convenient, especially our dis-tance learning students in Dallas,” saidTessa Crumley, office specialist for thebookstore who maintains the bookstore’swebsite.

8Campus Cam: The CampusCam allows students, parentsand alumni to log on to theSt. Edward’s website and get a bird’s eye view of what is

happening on campus. The Campus Camis currently mounted outside Sister MarieAndre Walsh’s office window facing thefountain in Ragsdale Plaza, and the imageis updated every five minutes. With thecampus gearing up for the addition ofseveral new buildings future plans forother campus cams are in the works.

9Virtual Reality Tours: Inkeeping with the changingtimes, St. Edward’s Universityhas developed virtual campustours online. The “e-tours”

include pictures of Main Building steps,Main Building interior and RagsdalePlaza. The tours were designed withprospective students in mind. Some areunable to visit campus so St. Edward’s hasutilized technology in order to bring thecampus to them.

4Research Librarians: Ifstudents need assistance withtheir assignments, referencelibrarians are on hand toanswer any questions they

may have concerning research and libraryresources. Librarians help students identi-fy, locate, evaluate and use both tradition-al library resources and the best of currenttechnology. The reference section in thelibrary contains general reference bookson controversial issues and questions, subject encyclopedias, and almanacs thatstudents can use while researching.

5One-on-one attention:Students still enjoying meet-ing with professors one-on-one, both in and out of theclassroom. Professors strive

to know their students’ names and beaccessible for questions. Many studentswork one-on-one with professors forindependent studies or research projects.

6Art instruction: St.Edward’s students can still befound getting their handsdirty, studying such tradition-al arts as clay, sculpting, and

The walking tour includes the histo-ry of St. Edward’s and the tangibleexperience of the beautiful campusand its students. According to theOffice of Admission, the tour guidesconduct an average of 20 tours perweek. Market research shows that formost prospective students, visitingcampus “seals the deal” in their col-lege decision process.

10Late NightCramming:Students stillstay up allhours of the

night, guzzling countless cups of cof-fee, preparing for a big test or finishing apaper. As the end of each semester creepsup on students, more and more of themcan be found around campus late atnight. Some of the favorite late nightspots on campus include theScarborough-Phillips Library and theMoody Hall atrium and 24-hour com-puter lab. ■

The nuts and boltsof the online classes varyfrom institution to insti-tution, professor to pro-fessor. Courses take on amyriad of forms; lecturesare posted on web sitesor distributed via email,homework is emailed asattachments, discussionsare held in virtual chatrooms or on list serves. Interactive exer-cises are created to engage students andhelp them develop relationships with eachother even though they infrequently “see”each other.

But can an online class closely mir-ror the experience of a classroom heldcourse?

Associate Professor of Philosophy forNew College Danney Ursery was the first

professor to offer anonline class at St.Edward’s six years ago.Since then, he has ledat least two classesonline each semester.St. Edward’s UniversityMagazine asked Urseryto share his thoughts onteaching online.

Q: How did you become interestedin teaching online?

A: In the spring of 1995, I offeredmy first completely online classusing Usenet News. I wasn’t somebig techie at that time; I was quitethe opposite, in fact. But I saw aneed to get into online classesbecause in the New College pro-gram, most seminars only meetevery two weeks. I felt that for aphilosophy class, that wasn’t a

sufficient number of contacthours. I began to realize that if wehad a class online, I could meetwith my class a few times a week.So I effectively was able to increasethe number of contact hours bygoing online. I often refer studentsto external web sites for readingassignments, which helps keep thecourse current and relevant. Whileonline, instructors can’t verballylecture. I do sometimes post text-based mini-lectures or an outlineof that week’s reading. We’ve comea long way since then.

Q: How so?

A: When I started out, we were usingUsenet, which was basically a verytext driven program. We thenmoved onto using a programcalled Web Course in a Box, andnow we use a program calledBlackboard. IT allows a professorto create an online communityspecific to the course that is beingtaught.

Q: How does an online class work,exactly?

A: I start each class with a questionthat I post on a list-serve typeboard. Students respond to myquestion, and respond to oneanother’s reponses. The class dis-cussion then takes the form of students posting responses to my question. Often, studentscomment on each other’s respons-es, which continues the dialogue. I sometimes have class membersact as discussion leaders, whichhelps students become moreinvested in our “virtual” classroom

community. In addi-tion to discussions,students have essayassignments andexaminations, both ofwhich are submittedto me through email.For philosophy andethics, at least, thishas increased studentlearning while keep-ing a student-cen-tered educationalexperience.

Being in class is a completelyasynchronous experience. A student can be “in class” at 2 p.m.or 2 a.m. But everybody has toparticipate in order to get a partic-ipation grade, which makes upabout 20 percent of the coursegrade. If I didn’t do it like that, itwould be just be a correspondencecourse which is not what I seeonline learning to be.

Q: What are the benefits of teaching online?

A: One benefit is the flexibility. Nolonger do students take 15 hoursof classes and that’s it. Many ofthem work. So I think the asyn-chronous nature of the courses isone of the big benefits. They canbe in class when it “fits” theirschedule, not when it fits ours.

Another benefit is that in a class-room, people often make off-handed comments and they don’talways think about what they aresaying. Most of the students in myonline classes learn, within thefirst couple of weeks, that oncethey post a comment, it’s there.And if it’s a comment that is not

well thought out, it doesn’t goaway — it stays up all semester.Because of this, I think studentsbecome more reflective learners.

Q: What are the drawbacks?

A: One thing is that you don’t get toknow the students in the sameway. I could be sitting next to abrilliant student in a restaurant,and I wouldn’t know. So theybecome faceless names. But eventhat has its benefits. I wouldn’t beable to tell you whether Joe Doe isblack or white, so I don’t have anybiases coming out based on race.It’s the same with gender.Sometimes I don’t know whether a student is male or female. So tosome extent, it keeps possible bias-es out of the classroom.

Q: Have you changed your teachingapproach as an online professor?

A: I’ve done better about understand-ing how to build a community.Because you don’t have the luxuryof sitting face-to-face, it’s some-thing you have to pay attention toas a professor. We do online exer-cises that allow us to get to knoweach other at the beginning of thesemester. I even have a separate dis-cussion forum, where students cantalk about non class-related materi-als. I’ve come to realize, over time,that this community building is akey part of any class, especially anonline class. ■

What’s the biggest challenge toteaching technology? Facilities.

As technology is increasingly incor-porated into the teaching curriculum atSt. Edward’s, the need for facilities tomatch the demands of faculty and stu-dents is increasing with each passingsemester. The university has worked tooutfit existing buildings with computersand work stations, but a new buildingwill provide a significant boost in studentaccess to high-tech classrooms and com-puter labs.

On its completion in August 2002,the new academic building will not onlyadd 12 teaching classrooms to campus,but also three computer classrooms with acomputer station for each student, saidDave Dickson, vice president of FinancialAffairs. In addition, the building will fea-ture a 24-hour, state-of-the-art computerlab.

The computer classrooms and com-puter lab will be in each of one section ofthe building, called the computer “tower.”The three high-tech classrooms will besituated above the lab and will have 25 to27 computer stations in each of them.Because this electronic equipment willgenerate a significant amount of heat, thisstate-of-the-art tower will be equippedwith a separate air-conditioning system

that will increase the building’s overallenergy efficiency.

Plans for future technologicaladvances have also played an importantpart in the design of the new building.“We are trying to think futuristically togive us the flexibility to put other thingsin as they become available,” saidDickson.

One possibility for future technolog-ical expansion may be turning one of thecomputer classrooms into a videoconfer-ence room. Infrastructure that wouldallow for eventual expansion is beingincorporated into the design. “The video-conference room could be used for teach-ing both on campus and at a remote loca-tion at the same time,” said MaryLambert, director of InstructionalTechnology. The potential videoconfer-ence room could be used for distancelearning, faculty and staff workshops, orfor any number of purposes.

“The hope is that this building willadd enough capacity to carry us with ourenrollment growth until we can finish thenext academic building: the science build-ing that will eventually replace FleckHall,” said Dickson.

While the technological capabilitiesof the building design are important,architects have also been working to

ensure this high-tech structure fits theclassical look of the St. Edward’sUniversity campus. The design of thebuilding has undergone some changes asthe planners worked to incorporate morethan just the projected needs, both inphysical and technological capacity, butalso the existing beauty of the campus.

“In the original master plan, this aca-demic building was going to be muchcloser in proximity to Andre Hall, and itwouldn’t have worked as well,” saidDickson. “But the reason why we movedthe building was that there are two verynice trees in front of Andre Hall, and wedidn’t want to lose those trees.”

Architecturally, the building hasbeen designed to fit in with the spirit ofthe rest of campus. It embraces the blendof historic and modern, and is both aes-thetically pleasing and functional.

“What people don’t realize when theylook at some of the buildings on campusis that Main Building, for instance, is notall stone,” said Dickson. “In fact, half of itis brick. Holy Cross is entirely brickexcept for some stone at the base.”

Keeping with that theme, the newbuilding will probably be brick as well.The architect, Arthur W. Andersson ofAndersson•Wise Architects of Austin, isdoing research to find a brick that is close

to what was used on Holy Cross Hallwhen it was built almost a hundred yearsago, in 1903.

While the new building is not beingdesigned to compete with the most recog-nizable building on campus, it does havemany features that have been inspired byMain Building. The new academic build-ing will have a red, pitched roof and thecomputer tower will be reminiscent of thebell tower that plays such a prominentrole in the St. Edward’s identity. Thephysical layout of the building itself willbe very similar to Holy Cross Hall.

“This architect is very creative,” saidDickson. “The architects studied MainBuilding and Holy Cross Hall and fromthat have developed proportions for thenew building.”

Construction on the academic build-ing is slated to begin in July of this year.The new academic building will mark thefirst evidence of the ambitious campusMaster Plan, which will eventuallyinclude an additional academic building,four new residence halls, a new theater, aparking garage, a new chapel, several newathletic fields, a new administrationbuilding, and a redesigned road system.Existing buildings, including theScarborough-Phillips Library, will alsoreceive a face-lift and expansion. ■

rom the outside, the world of technol-ogy looks like a brutal, cut-throat jungle.In a business where 60-hour work weeksare never enough, where high-octaneStarbucks coffee is shipped directly to theoffice by the barrel, and where changes —in products and employees — happenfaster than ever, sometimes it’s hard to seethe humanity for the hardware.

Still, at the end of the day somethings haven’t changed in the NewEconomy: It still helps to be human.Caring about people, being creative andarticulate and understanding the big pic-ture remain some of the traits that help aperson survive and thrive, say three St.Edward’s University alumni who aredoing just that.

Behind every program, every market-ing plan and new product are men andwomen who are working together in asprawling, complex system to make it

happen. Understanding how people workand the interdependence of every one,not just within the company, but alsowithin the local and international com-munity, are valuable skills to have in theworld of technology, and it is a way ofthinking that St. Edward’s teaches espe-cially well, alumni say.

“No one can make a computer chipor a computer all by themselves,” saidMichael Greig, MBA ’92, the senior pro-gram manager responsible for micro-processors at Advanced Micro Devices inAustin. It takes billions of dollars of equip-ment and resources and thousands of peo-ple working in groups to put all the piecestogether, Greig said.

Getting his MBA at St. Edward’s in1992 helped him see how the pieces ofhis company fit together and in theprocess his world got bigger. “It made meopen my eyes,” Greig said.

Greig has spent all 17 years of his adultworking life in the semi-conductor business,13 of those at AMD. After graduating witha chemical engineering degree, he wentdirectly into the technology sector workingin a clean room making silicon wafers, thebuilding blocks for computer chips.

Every day for almost eight years heput on a white GoreTex suit that covered

his entire body except for his eyes, whichwere encased by goggles. Then he’d walkdown an air tunnel and into a tightlyenclosed and regulated room where hewould work all day. As he describes whatit was like for him, he puts his hands tohis eyes like he’s holding binoculars. “This is all I could see: my vision wasvery limited. I felt like my career was likethat. I wanted to broaden my perspec-tive,” Greig said, throwing his arms wideinto the air to illustrate his point.

For three and a half years Greig wentto class at night and on the weekendswhile he continued to work full time atAMD. Driven back to the classroom byhis deep curiosity and a need for changein his life, once there he found that theinteractions among his peers in the busi-ness program became the fuel for hisgrowing passion to move into a manage-ment position within AMD. Now over-sees the program management for allAthlon and Duron microprocessors beforethey are introduced to the public. Hecoordinates with the different teamsworking on everything from productdesign to quality testing and from prod-uct branding to product launch planning.He makes sure everything stays on sched-ule and comes together when it should.

“What was so valuable to me wasworking for a while, getting a foothold ina business, then going back to school,”said Greig, who now serves as a memberof the St. Edward’s University AlumniAssociation board of Directors. “You’re inclass with finance people and marketingpeople who have been out there too.You’re all learning from each other.”

John H. Bauer, ’62, an accountinggraduate of St. Edward’s and former chairof the university’s Board of Trustees,agrees that the technology business is allabout people.

“Technology is a pure people func-tion,” said Bauer. “People are creative, nottechnology.”

Bauer is the executive vice presidentof Nintendo of America in Seattle. Beforemoving into the fun and games industryin 1994, Bauer was a managing partnerwithin the accounting firm Coopers &Lybrand, now PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Working in technology requiresquick decisions and creativity, he saidwhile on a recent business trip thatbrought him to Austin. A strong liberalarts background can be a great founda-tion to a career in technology, he believes.

“St. Edward’s can challenge a per-son’s creativity regardless of what they are

doing,” Bauer said. “And that’s the nameof the game, the creative side. If St.Edward’s can make people dream, makethem think, they are going be successfulregardless of whether they go to lawschool or into teaching or technology.”

For Sheri Graner Ray, ’97, anotherSt. Edward’s alumna influential in theworld of technology, that game is defi-nitely what it’s all about, and making surewomen step up to play and then join theranks of creative leaders within the tech-nology business is her passion.

She works full time as the Internetstrategy manager for MetroWerks inAustin as well as the editor in chief oftheir game development website. At nightand on the weekends she attends classesin the MLA program at St. Edward’s. She earned her undergraduate from St.Edward’s New College program in 1997.Reading literature and taking the time tostep back and feed her creative juicesallows her to realize connections betweenher work and the rest of the world. It’shelped her become one of the most influ-ential women in the international worldof video games for girls and women.

A publishing house recently soughther out to write a book about women’sroles in the gaming industry, and she plans

to earn a Ph.D. tostudy what drawswomen to technologyand specifically, to videogames. Graner Ray saidit’s a subject that’simportant to our cul-ture because womenhave not been allowedto have fun with tech-nology. Her researchshows that for every100 men working todesign new technologysoftware, there are onlyabout five or sixwomen.“If we do not allow

our girls to have fun with technology, weare going to see women fall behind thecurve in salaries and we’ll see women inmore support roles,” she said. Whenwomen are comfortable with computersand understand technology, they canleverage that knowledge to be leaders ofthe industry and society and culture, shesaid.

The MLA program allows her toapproach problems like these and expressthem in ways that the industry can hearand then begin to address.

“I have a paper now that I’m just fin-ishing where we take literature and applyit to a problem within a group of peoplewe are working with. I am addressingsome of the misogyny and women’s issuesin the game industry and in Cyberpunk(a science fiction sub-genre),” she said.

She was recently selected the co-chairwoman of the Women in GameDevelopment Committee for theInternational Game DeveloperAssociation. She shares her ideas as a fre-quent lecturer at conferences and everyday receives dozens of emails fromwomen in the international network sheis helping build within the industry.

Like Greig and Bauer, she recognizesthat technology is still about people andhuman connections, and that has helpedmake them all leaders in the industry andallowed them to enjoy their work.

“It’s a vibrant, exciting industry andjust an awful lot of fun,” said Graner Ray. ■

When T.K. Griffith’s basketball team atArchbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohiotakes the court, they learn about a lot morethan winning and losing. His team also learnsabout life’s lessons.

“In coaching, I've used the Holy Cross valuesto keep things in perspective — not to get toocaught up in the wins and losses but more inthe life lessons that can be learned throughbasketball. I've tried to impact kids beyond thecourt. My pride comes from seeing studentspersevere, get into college, earn a degree andmature into responsible leaders.”

Griffith is in his eighth season as coach atthe high school, where he wears a number ofhats: English teacher, alumni director, religion teacher, guidance counselor, and ofcourse, head coach. He’s even known to emcee school functions. His inspiration? Griffith cites many past teachers as role models.

“St. Edward’s had a huge impact on my life,” he said. “I learned how to communi-cate with a variety of people and personalities. I learned that in order to really be successful, you have to lose your sense of self. I learned that students will either see youas a teacher or as a person, and that you can have a much bigger impact on their life if they see you as a person. That was how I viewed many of the influential people at St. Edward’s like Brother John Perron, CSC, Anna Skinner, Sister AnneCrane — as people first and teachers second.”

The Holy Cross tradition runs deep in Griffith’s family. His parents, Tim Griffith,’70, and Penny Griffith, ’70, brothers Shaun Griffith, ’96, and KevinGriffith, ’00, sister-in-law Kippi Griffith, ’96, and wife Amy Griffith, ’93,all attended St. Edward’s.” The principles of educating the mind, body and soul andmaking a difference in the lives of others have guided me and my family through mostof our decisions.”

90s CONT. In the December issue of St. Edward’s University Magazine, we asked alumni to submittheir memories of student participation in the National Student Strike of 1970. On May6 of that year, students participated in a teach-in and later marched downtown toprotest the expansion of the war and to mourn the deaths of four student protestors atKent State University in Ohio. Here are a few of reflections submitted by alumni:

“I am confident that there is not a single male student from that era who does notrecall his draft number. As many of our friends at home were called into service andsent to Vietnam, we were acutely aware of the hopelessness of the conflict. Unrest hadbeen fermenting for weeks in Austin prior to the eruption of emotions that followed thestudent deaths at Kent State University. At St. Edward’s, the real horror of the warbecame real. I vividly recall many of us discussing the conversations we had with ourparents who implored us to avoid the protest while at the same time joining our con-demnation of the war.

The most significant memory I have of May 1970, however, was not student partici-pate. We were led by several faculty members, including Dr. Claude Nolan and Dr.Richard Hunt. As they urged us to peacefully but vociferously let our voices be heard,they imparted the true spirit of St. Edward’s. We were not a parochial institution butrather a part of a much larger community determined to be heard on issues of greatsocial importance. They taught us that we could make a difference in the world thatdesperately needed change.

Shortly after these events, I took a much greater interest in the extracurricular eventsof Dr. Nolan and Dr. Hunt. It was only then that I became aware if the tremendouscontributions these individuals made to the civil rights movement in Austin. It not onlychanged my view of the university, but also made me enormously proud to be a St. Edward’s University student.”

“I remember feeling strongly that I wanted to support my country and having equallystrong feelings that we were making a mistake by being in Vietnam. Many of us appre-

ciated St. Edward’s pro-viding us with a forum toair our opinions in anappropriate manner.

I remember that almosteveryone who chose toparticipate in the anti-warmarch did so peacefully.We were exercising ourright to peacefully assem-ble and, maybe for the firsttime in our lives, experi-encing first hand the

demoncratic principal of free expression of ourbeliefs. We hoped that in some way our “statement”and the “statements” of others through out the coun-try would cause our government’s policy to change.

In my recollection, most people were sensitive tothe plight of the American soldier who, while doingtheir best for their country, might have vainly beentrying to accomplish an unattainable feat.”
