11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, June 17, 2018
Saturday: Sacrament of Reconciliation 4-5pm
Vigil Mass 5:30pm, Sunday: 9:30am & 11:00am
Fr. Pasala Hruday Kumar (HGN) Deacon Jerry Pierce
"This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land. Of its own
accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear." (Mk 4:26, 28-29)
"This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and
mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our
notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a
kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the
Israelites had asked God for a king.
After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered
by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build,
both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries
longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from
this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with
its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit."
Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth.
There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has
come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow
seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity, and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the
growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone,
but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.

Jesus was a miracle worker, but our Religious Ed teachers are not.
Parents and Parishioners we need your help.
Below is a list of activities we have offered for the last several years and hope to continue to offer with your help.
With an Average of 130 registered students, each parent (or any adult willing to help our youth) is asked to pick one activity to help with.
The Religious Ed Office has all the information and will assist with each activity, we just need a little help from our friends:)
Contact Linda Horton at 885-6600 or [email protected] to volunteer and keep our youth active!
•YOUTH MASSES (2
ND Sunday of each Month) – 2-4 parents help coordinate 1 Youth Lector and 4 Youth

What is a catechist?
A catechist is... •A person who faithfully believes in Jesus and is a witness to His message.... •A person who enjoys the company of children and youth.... •A practicing Catholic willing to commit to spending a couple of hours a week
sharing the Faith they have receivedH •A person who is spiritually alive and willing to share enthusiastically his/her
faith.... •A person who wants to learn more about the Bible and Christ’s teaching...... •A parent, grandparent, single person, college student or high school student
(wink, wink—this means you recently confirmed students) A catechist is not necessarily.... •A person who has studied theology and ScriptureH •An experienced teacher.... •A “perfect” person....
We have several Catechist positions available: •Pre-Confirmation Catechist (approx.. 8th gr) •Assistant Catechists for all grades (at least 6 would be helpful - great
opportunity students who were confirmed last month:) •Substitute Catechists for all grades
If you decide to become a catechist, you have answered God’s call, the call of your baptism. You will be making a decision that will enrich your life and the lives of the children you teach.
