RESPECT PoetryAs part of our Health study, Year 5s were asked to think about and discuss the term “Respect”, with a main focus on: How do they show respect to others around them?

In and around the classrooms:

YEAR 5

What does respectful behaviour and interaction look like? After a small group brainstorm and class discussion, we made our own acrostic poems related to this topic. Slime Experiment:We had so much fun making slime as part of our Science curriculum! We studied the chemical reaction between substances such as glue, shaving foam and Borax. It was amazing how different some of the results were depending on how much of each ingredient was used. We found that if we used too much Borax, the slime became very rubbery and had very little elasticity and would break. Therefore, the perfect combination of ingredients used was very important. This experiment not only resulted in some colourful creations but taught us about the importance of measuring when conducting experiments in Science.

Monday was Crazy Hair DayI have a cowlick and a pony tail. I used hairspray and elastic bands. The colours are light blue, purple, peach, green and pink. I feel like a pony. - MaiMy hair pink. It is a Troll’s wig. My hair is crazy. My teacher has crazy hair too. I love my hair! - ElvieCrazy Hair day is so much fun. I have two paint brushes in my hair. I have one bun in my hair. I

Dominic, Profile of a “Trail Blazer” for ChristSt Dominic’s Day Mass 7 August 2018

I would like to thank the teachers, students and parents who were here last week, for their calm response to the lockdown.

The communication from everyone has reflected a strong sense of trust and community. Our thoughts and prayers are with all and the families directly affected.

Parent Engagement On Friday 3rd August the Year 6 Class shared a fabulous morning with their families. The day started with a class mass, followed by collaborative scrapbooking. The class enjoyed spending time with family members and reliving some of the memories they have shared. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a special day.

Student Engagement Also on Friday, the Reception to Year 3s attended a Patch Theatre engaging adaption of Nick Bland’s book, Cranky Bear. Singing, dancing and dress ups enhanced the fun performance. My favourite part:

...was the sheep who gave a pillow to the bear. She was very kind and thoughtful. - Tania Year 2...was at the start when they song which explained what was happening in the story. It was an enjoyable experience. - Eliza Year 2

Year 11 Trip to Canberra25 Year 11 students escaped Adelaide’s “warmer” weather to face the chill of Canberra. Setting off after lunch on the 24th of July, the group’s anticipation was high for a fun and memorable five days ahead. We visited many attractions: National Capital Exhibition, the National Library of Australia, Questacon, National Gallery of Australia, Mount Ainslie, the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, Black Mountain Tower, the CSIRO, the High Court of Australia, the Museum of Australian Democracy, and the Australian Electoral Commission.

The most memorable activity was an exclusive and interactive tour of Government House that provided the girls with a unique insight into the history of Australia’s governance.

On the last day of the visit, a 16km bike ride around Lake Burley Griffin allowed us to view many beautiful sites of Canberra and wear ourselves out for the flight home.

These Year 11 Students from St Dominic’s have recently undertaken this educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.

Science & Engineering Challenge

On Friday the 3rd of August Ms. Mazzarollo’s Maths class went to the Velodrome for the Science and Engineering Challenge. There were many activities on offer such as bridge building, making a catapult, making a bionic hand, decoding messages and more. My group did ‘Helter Skelter Shelter’ and ‘Confounding Communications’. St. Dominic’s’ came 5th overall, came 2nd in Bridge Building and was best overall in Helter Skelter Shelter. We learnt about basics in engineering and overall we had a great day.
