Understanding the significance of Trinity Sunday can be as simple as one-two-three. It begins with God the Father—who gave us his only bego en Son: then Jesus—who in turn promised that he would send us the Holy Spirit. All of that is declared every me we sign ourselves saying “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Yet, the mystery of a triune God equally confound the simple child and the wise old man as the well-known story of Saint Augus ne teaches us. One day while walking along the seashore, pondering the Trinity, Augus ne encountered a boy pouring ocean water into a hole in the sand. The boy explained: “I am going to put the entre ocean into this hole.” Saint Augus ne told him that it was impossible. The hole in the sand was too small to contain all of the vast ocean. Surprisingly, the boy replied, “And neither can you fit the Trinity into your li le brain.” When the boy vanished, St. Augus-

ne realized he had been talking to an angel. We con nue to walk by faith. Affirming the Trinity every

me we cross ourselves. Some years ago I was at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport Beach to preach at the Vigil and Funeral Mass of my cousin Fr. Tom O’Don-nell, the Pastor of the parish. Before the mass, I was talking with Bishop Norman McFarland, the Bishop of Orange who had just returned from a golfing vaca on. During our con-versa on he stated that he had no trouble understanding the Trinity

but the golf swing was the mystery that couldn’t be solved. For most of us the mystery of the Trinity leaves us perplexed. Yet we believe in the Trinity. For those who believe no explana on is necessary but for those who do not believe no explana on is possible. Yet, have you ever no ced how o en we invoke the Trinity during the liturgy? • We begin with the sign of the

cross. “In the name of the Fa-ther and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

• The end of the opening prayer we pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.

• In the Final Doxology we say: “Through him and with him and in him in the unity of the Holy Spirit all Glory and Honor is yours forever and ever.”

The plethora of Trinitarian prayer reminds us that the whole of our liturgy is carved out within the Trini-ty itself—and that the whole of our lives are lived within the life of the Trinity. Recently however many theologi-ans are reminding us that the Trinity has been present in crea on from the beginning and that we are living our whole lives within the ac on of the Trinity who creates, guides and energizes the whole universe. Bap sm into the Trinity reminds us that we share God’s very life; through grace we are drawn into Communion and life and love is shared by Father. Son and Spirit. Our whole spiritual journey can be summoned up as a process of

learning to live in conscious union with the Trinity and le ng that con-sciousness shape our a tudes and our ac ons in daily life. We need to understand the near-ness of the Trinity: Once a young boy stood watching a Gypsy as he drank from a well in the town square. A er drink-ing the man con nued to gaze into the well as though looking at some-one. He was a giant of a man but had a friendly face. So the boy ap-proached him and asked, “who lived down there?” “God does,” answered the Gypsy. “Can I see him,” asked the boy. “Sure you can” said the Gypsy. Then taking the boy into his arms he li ed him up so that he could see down into the well. All the boy could see, however was his own reflec on in the water. “But that’s only me” he cried in disappointment. “All I see is me.” “Ah the Gypsy re-plied, now you know where God lives. He lives in you.” The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all three persons reveal the fullness of the unity of God’s love. We expe-rience something of that love when it is communicated in simple ways through the generosity of our par-ents loves, one that is so important in the growth of every child of God. The Irish writer Clarel Boylan re-flected on the las ng power of her parents love. My parents did two things for me: They gave me a sense of my own importance and they let me know that I was loved. If your parents have given you these two things—a sense of self and the love—you have them all your life. If

The Most Holy Trinity Life, the Universe, and Everything Why does God love us so much? And why are we able to love others? The answer to these ques ons is found in the meaning of today's feast. Trinity Sunday celebrates not so much an idea of three-in-one, as the rela onship of the Persons of the Trinity with each other and with us. The idea of the Trinity is based on love. But God's love was so great, God went even further. God created us to be loved by God. Though human love is not perfect, the love of man and woman can produce another person, a child. The three Persons of the Trinity share one life in God. But through bap sm we also share in God's life. Just as parents love to see how their children look like them, so God loves to see the divine in us. Our decision to love is a response to God's love, and our ability to love is itself a gi from God. The meaning of life, the universe, and everything is Love, the love of the Trinity for each other and for us. The ques on now is, how well do we use that gi of God's love by loving each other? not, you’re forever looking for them. I don’t think anything else ma ers. Love is the essen al atmosphere for every child to grow in and when that love is sure any hardship can be faced. We are all children of the one God and love is essen al for con nued growth. We all have the responsibility for playing our part. That is why St. Paul says: “Be united, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.” None of the Trinity re res from the task of loving the world. Gods love is sure and everlas ng. As chil-dren of the one God we never grow out of the need of his love. Neither do we outgrow the responsibility to share it with others. NATIVE AMERICAN PRAYER TO GOD O Great Spirit whose voice I hear in the winds, And whose breath gives life to the world, Hear me. I come to you as one of your many children. I am small and weak. I need your strength and your wisdom. May I walk in beauty. May my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught your children. The lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. Make me strong so that I may not be superior to oth-er people but able to fight my greatest enemy, which is myself. Make me ever ready to come to you with straight eyes so that when life fades as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.
