PASTOR’S CORNER Today is the feast of the Presenta on of the Lord, when Mary and Joseph, faithful Jewish parents as they were, bring their son up to the temple in Jerusalem place him under the blessing of God and make the offering prescribed in the law. OF course, they offer the offering of the poor emphasizing that Jesus came among the poor and not the elites. There is an old prophet there, Simeon, who had longed to see the ac on of God before he dies. He recognizes in Jesus that interven on of God both fulfilling the hopes of Israel

but also beginning something new as a light for all na ons. Ma hew 13:52 says the person of faith is like a "householder who brings from his storehouse things both new and old" The new and old are present in this feast, Jesu and Simeon, the old law and prophecies and the new light. That balancing of the new and the old has been a challenge in our Church since the second Va can council. Some long for the supposed "good old days" and want to retreat to the old tradi ons of La n masses, tradi onal devo ons, liturgical dress, etc. Some others want to overthrow the past in favor of new beginnings, some mes not rooted in the tradi on. Someone has said that tradi on is the living faith of the dead but tradi onalism is the dead faith of the living. Simeon is a good model of true tradi on, using the old tradi on to recognize the new thing that God is doing. Ma hew's gospel is guided by that principle also. I hope you can join us for our Monday evening explora ons of Ma hew's storehouse from which he draws treasures both new and old. We begin tomorrow evening. We welcome Fr Jim Clarke this weekend. Fr Jim is a well-known speaker and retreat leader. As well as preaching masses today, he will lead us in reflec ons in the Church on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week at 7.00 pm. We also have Sr Regina Robbins with us on Friday evening and Saturday morning in the small hall speaking on "Prayer the pathway to a rela onship with God" So the whole week offers us a spiritual menu from which you can enjoy the whole meal or choose your plates as

me and taste allow.

God Bless Fr Jay

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW? The importance of making rules As parents, we want our children to see us as their allies and teachers, not just the people who lay down the law. But some mes, rules are more effec ve — rules are simple and easy to remember, and leave no room for error. When it comes to your child’s safety, rules are cri cal. And when it comes to your child’s body, rules can help them understand how to protect themselves from predators. Establishing rules about who can see or touch their bodies is an important part of preven ng child sexual abuse.
