XV Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 14, 2019 This past weekend our parish was blessed with a visitor representing Catholic Relief Services. We welcomed Father Rooney who spoke at all Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries and the good work CRS does. CRS is the official arm of the Catholic Church in America to engage in significant works of Social Justice. Fr. Rooney’s presence and words remain a blessing to our parish. It is my hope that we will continue to respond to the work of the Gospel through CRS.

This weekend we hear the proclamation of the gospel story of the Good Samaritan. Over time this story has been subjected to some of the most serious reductionism that could assault sacred scripture. For many, the figure of the Samaritan is interpreted as a kind of social do-gooder whom we should imitate by the occasional effort that causes us to go out of our way to perform an act of kindness. While that is true to a degree, the reality of the story is that it is a scathing denunciation on those people for whom religion is really religiosity and that it is a show and a sham not affecting their lives at the most basic level. That is evident in the response of the Priest and the Levite to the man who was beset by robbers.

Those listening to Jesus would have had very low expectations of the response of the Samaritan. There was a sort of tribal animosity between some in Judaism and the Samaritans. The scholar of the law to whom Je-sus addresses this parable, among others, would have thought the Samaritan people individually and collectively were incapable of goodness. This is clearly seen in his response to Jesus. When asked: “Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?” We are told he responded by saying: “The one who treated him with mercy.” The so-called scholar of the law cannot even bring himself to acknowledge that it was a Samaritan who did the good deed.

Bring a good Samaritan does not mean going around with a shiny halo, keeping that headpiece flit-tering with one good turn after another. Being a Good Samaritan, evidently, means being willing to align your behavior with your beliefs. This necessarily involves a risk; but then we heard last week that disciple-ship, following Jesus and his teachings is risky business.

At the outset of the Jubilee Year of Mercy our Holy Father, Pope Francis, wrote: It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on

the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the impris-oned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead.

NUTRITIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

I think it is hard for some families to make ends meet. Be-cause of sickness or lack of education, some people can’t get out and work. By the end of the month there are emergencies, so the food bank here at St. Helena’s is supposed to fill that gap to help make things stretch. Our population is pretty di-verse. There are a lot of seniors who utilize the food bank be-cause they are caregivers for their grandchildren. I’m a nurse, so the food bank involves a sense of nutrition. Food can mean health, so we usually encourage the attendees when they are selecting food to be careful of their health needs. As a nurse, it’s important for me to incorporate nutrition information and to not only give food to these people, but to feed their minds and encourage them to do better for themselves. I know Cath-olic Charities does a multitude of things. But feeding people is one of the most important and basic things. It gives parents and grandparents a sense of dignity to be able to provide for their family. There’s nothing worse than having someone in your family that wants something to eat and you’re not able to provide for them. So I think the CCA feeding people is im-portant, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Because when people gather around and share a prepared meal, something amazing happens. We’re a beacon of hope for these people.

The Villa provides a home and all around care for retired priests. Many elderly priests who have given their lives in service to the faithful Archdiocese of Philadelphia now have health issues, physical disabilities and are in need of care and sup-port. There are currently 154 retired priests within the Arch-diocese. "All my life I've worked closely with the Catholic Charities Appeal on the giving end of their services. I never realized I'd be on the other end of that equation; I never realized that people would be taking care of me. We are directly taken care of the by the good people of the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia, and that's a humbling feeling."

St. Cornelius School New Principal is Announced

We are excited to announce that Mr. Bob Touey has accepted the Principal position at our school. Mr. Touey has a distinguished career in Catholic education and leadership. Mr. Touey recently served 11 years as Headmaster at Regina Angelorum Academy where the academy grew from thirty students to one hundred and thirty students. In addition, Mr. Touey has over 19 years of successful teaching experience in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Mr. Touey holds a Bachelor of Arts from Villanova University and a Master of Science from Saint Joseph University. Mr. Touey was introduced to members of the Board of Limited Jurisdiction this past Monday evening. In the coming days and weeks there will be sev-eral opportunities for him to meet with our families and the wider parish community.

Our recent parish council election was complet-ed in Mid June. As always, good candidates from our parish stepped forward and presented themselves before the parish for consideration. I want to thank those who were so willing to

answer the call to serve the parish. For those who were not elected I encourage you to remain faithful to your call to con-tinue to serve the parish in the many ways we offer. The results of the election have provided us with a new set of fresh faces to assist the council and pastor to consider parish needs, define priorities, implement action plans, and to explore the means to help our parish community hear and heed the call to discipleship by utilizing their gifts and talents to strengthen the community and to serve others. The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant per-son/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and example of the Lord Jesus:

"Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be con-soled" (Matthew 5:4). A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation minis-try. The next session will be July 20, 2019. Open Consolation Ses-sions will be held in the Bethany Room of the Church the third Saturday of the month from 3:30 to 5:00pm. St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families with Family Promise in southern Chester County. Our volun-teers spend time with the most vulnerable in our neigh-boring community and testify to growing in Christ-like compassion through this outreach ministry. Our next week to serve is the week of July 28 through August 4th. We warmly welcome new volunteers and if you can’t volunteer, we would appreciate donations to support the

FUNERAL MINISTRY Funeral Ministry is a parish organization that provides volun-teers to assist with the celebration of the funeral liturgy. Have you ever wanted to be an altar server? HOSPITALITY MINISTRY

PREP Registration continues for the 2019-2020 school year. 1st - 7th grade classes will be offered on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. The Middle School Summer Reading require-ments are now posted to the school’s website under the Parents tab.

We are in need of more Cate-chists and Aides for the 2019-2020 school year. You must be a faithful Catholic and pass secu-rity clearances.
