Please join us in prayer for the repose of the soul of our beloved Music Director
Lloyd Thompkins, who entered into Eternal Rest on April 15, 2020.
Lloyd was such a blessing to St. Clare’s Parish for over 35 years.
He led our Music liturgy with grace and harmony. He will be terribly missed.

ST. CLARE’S PRO-LIFE GROUP THOUGHT OF THE WEEK:
““Abortion is not a lesser evil, it’s a crime! It’s absolute
evil!...Every life counts: from the beginning to the end; from conception to natural death! This is the, “Right to Life” in
our society.” ...Pope Francis
HOW MUCH TO GIVE ...FOR GOD LOVES A PERSON WHO GIVES CHEERFULLY.”
(2 Corinthians 9:7)
At this time we would like to thank all those parishioners who have sent in their envelopes and have made generous donations. If you would like
to drop your envelopes off there is a box in the back of the church or you can drop them in the mail slot
on the Rectory door. Thank you for your sacrificial offerings of gratitude!
DEATH ANNOUNCEMENTS
Please pray for our parishioners and Archdiocesan priests who have recently
passed on to eternal life:
Robert Tedeschi Marie Tisi

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace Amen
HOLY NAME SOCIETY AND BIG DEAL SUPERMARKET
Big Deal Supermarket owner and community philanthropist Miguel Garcia announced the 2020 fundraiser totals. The 11th annual fundraiser was
the biggest one to date. Through the generosity of Mr. Garcia and Big Deal
Supermarket, parishioners, shoppers and the Holy Name Society, $7,400 was raised to support the Church of St. Clare
of Assisi/St. Francis Xavier. During the current COVID19 pandemic, shoppers did not forget to drop their sales receipts
into the big jar located in the front of the supermarket even though they wanted to exit the store ASAP. The Lenten
Fundraiser is truly a community effort that has become an annual tradition with monies raised used for church programs, amenities and repairs. Mr. Garcia proudly noted that the Holy Name Society-Big Deal Supermarket has raised over $68,760 since the fundraiser first began over a decade ago. Thank you to all who participated and who dropped their receipts into the
jar (even though their minds might have been elsewhere during this pandemic). We are very lucky to have a local supermarket
that serves their community so well.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The month of May has not only good weather, but an interesting pedigree. It is named after the Roman goddess Maia,
said to be the mother of Hermes, or Mercury. The Romans saw it as “love’s
month,” while in England, more practical farmers called it “Three Milks,” since the
cows grazing on springtime’s bounty could produce at a phenomenal rate. Old
customs die hard, and Christians have never made peace with Maytime frolics. No wonder that
popular tradition dedicated the month’s prayers and devotions to Mary, although we cannot lose sight of the fact that the
liturgy always has Easter at the center of celebration. Recent developments have enriched Mary’s place in a cycle of feast days woven through the whole year, dedicated Saturday as a
weekly day for devotion, and highlighted Mary’s role in the Advent story. In fact, every day of the year Evening Prayer centers on the singing of Mary’s Canticle of Praise. The fifty days of Easter culminate on Pentecost with Mary, present of
course for Christ’s birth, waiting in the upper room for the birth of the church.
ALL CHURCH ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY.
THE CHURCH WILL BE OPEN FOR PRIVATE PRAYER MONDAY-SATURDAY 7AM-12NOON AND ON SUNDAY
7AM-2PM
PLEASE STAY SAFE AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED THROUGH THE WEBSITE AND BULLETIN.
GOD BLESS YOU
Please keep our Parish Family in your prayers. Especially those who are ill and those who are caring
for them. Also, please keep nurses, doctors, first responders and essential workers in your prayers as
they are working so hard to keep us safe and protected. Please pray for those who are alone and
anxious in these troubling times.
God Bless St. Clare’s Parish and God Bless America!
SAINT CORONA Patroness of Epidemic Victims
Lord Jesus Christ, You came into this world for our salvation. Look kindly on us now, we pray, that we, and all those who serve You, might be kept safe from this epidemic. Heal those who are sick, comfort the suffering, bring back those who have gone astray, and above all,
Increase our faith, O Lord. Give us the grace to follow You and, like the martyr St. Corona, who gave her life for love of You, to take up our
crosses daily without fear or hesitation. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
St. Corona, patroness of epidemic victims, pray for us.
LLOYD THOMPKINS APRIL 17, 1950-APRIL 15, 2020
Like all of you, I am stunned and saddened by the death of
our Music Director, Lloyd Thompkins. His death is a big blow to our parish at a time
when we are already reeling from this Virus.
I have known Lloyd since I came here in 2012, when Fr. Guarnieri was here. He worked well under all of his
pastors, including Fr. Aufieri and myself. In the 30 plus years that he was guiding our music program, Lloyd saw many
changes, but he was the one constant. I know that his beloved choir will miss him terribly.
For myself, Lloyd was a patient teacher and helper. He taught me how to sing the Exsultet for the Easter Vigil—which was not easy. I remember coming into church at night when the choir
was practicing and simply sitting there to listen and pray.
I also remember celebrating the 11am Mass and listening to the beautiful meditation hymn that they worked on during the week, as the thunderous applause they’d received when they
finished. Those are moments that I will never forget.
All of this has been a lesson to me that everything in life is passing away before us. Everything changes, only God stays
the same.
We owe Lloyd our prayers as he begins his eternal life with God, in his true home.
May He Rest In Peace.

OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS
THIS WEEKEND
The Acts of the Apostles Chap 2, Verses 14, 22-33
God has raised the crucified Jesus, who now pours forth the Holy Spirit upon us.
The first Letter of Saint Peter
Chap 1 Verses 17-21 Our faith and hope are in God, who raised Jesus
from the dead.
The Gospel of Luke Chap 24, Verses 13-35
Through his words and in the breaking of the bread, the risen Christ made himself known to
two disciples on their way to Emmaus.
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Last week Father Roger and I drove around and “processed” with the monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament. I have to tell you it was truly amazing to see so many people come out to get a blessing. Even the reporters from CBS who showed up were astounded. One of them said that it was one of the most moving experiences in his thirty years of reporting. The main reason we decided to do this was to remind everyone that although we can’t have public masses and sacraments, Jesus is still very much here. He hasn’t gone anywhere and he isn’t going anywhere. He would never abandon us. We were hoping that this event would cheer up our parishioners, and anyone else in Morris Park, who might be feeling down about the situation.
It’s true, we do have a bad situation. There’s no sense denying that. But all of us are making the best of a bad situation until things get better, and they will get better. For myself, it was such a treat to see you in the streets praying and smiling. I want to remind you that church is open every day from 8am un-til noon, and on Sundays we are doing Adoration from 9am-11am. What a
great opportunity to come and pray and ask Jesus to give us hope. We’ve got to hang on a little longer, brothers and sisters. Pray everyday, keep this all in perspective, and God will send his Holy Spirit to lift us up. God Bless You,
